Plantain. It doesn’t look like much but it is a jack of all trades. People often ask “if you had to choose only one medicinal plant, what would it be?” which is just silly because I couldn’t possibly choose just one. But if I REALLY had to? think it would probably be plantain. It is anti inflammatory, antihistamine, antimicrobial, and more. Used both internally and externally, plantain is the go-to for all the boo boos. My youngest calls it the boo boo plant or boo boo leaf. It grows like a weed so I usually see it when I get out of my car to hit a trail and I always grab a few leaves and put them in my pocket. If it doesn’t grow in your own yard you will definitely see it in parking lots and parks. I use it on absolutely everything skin related. Splinters, bug bites, cuts, scrapes, burns, rashes, everything. It drew out a splinter in my knee last night that I didn’t even know I had, while keeping it from getting infected. It is drawing and can be used for all sorts of bites including snake bites. It stops bleeding and heals wounds. It also helps with pain and itching. Internally it can be used for gastrointestinal issues, including ulcerative conditions. It’s also used for coughs, colds, allergies, and the urinary tract. You can make a tincture with it (check my last post to see how) infuse it in oil, or just chew it up and slap it right on your skin. Dry it to save for later. It’s slightly bitter but not too bad in tea. I even throw the leaves in my eggs sometimes. Long story short, this is a plant you want to keep around. The answer may surprise some of you! 🌱 Our idea came about in the Fall of 2018 when we were teaching a three year old how to plant ginseng seeds (see photo #3). The look on his face shows the amazement of learning how seeds sprout! 😮 🏫 A middle school teacher at Marlinton Middle School saw our post and asked if we’d be interested in doing a presentation for her class. Have you ever wondered where plants get their names from? All plants have a scientific name, consisting of two words... the genus and species. This nomenclature is in Latin and oftentimes the names describe what we see! Take Echinacea purpurea, or purple coneflower. Its name reflects two key features: the color and the shape of its bloom. 'Echinacea' is the genus name, derived from the Greek word 'echinos,' meaning hedgehog or sea urchin, referring to the spiky central cone of the flower. 'purpurea' is the species name, simply meaning purple, highlighting its vibrant hue. 🌸💜 Though these names are super useful for sharing information across languages, they should not be considered the ""correct"" name for plants. Echinacea, for example, has dozens of other names in different languages, given by the many different indigenous peoples who have a relationship with this plant. These other names often carry important cultural information. Echinacea has gained quite a reputation all over the world for its herbal uses, but did you know it is native to our own backyard in the Eastern US? Much of what we know about it has come from the herbal traditions of native american groups. Sadly, you don't see it much in the wild anymore, so consider adding it to your garden! Avocado and Hair 🥑 Mix a ripe (no peel) avocado with a teaspoon of wheat germ oil and a teaspoon of jojoba oil and apply it to washed hair. Put a shower cap on and leave it on the hair (from the roots to the ends) for 30 minutes and rinse. This will help moisturize and strengthen the hair shaft by loading it with protein!

I have harvested Mullein that is growing on my property. I washed and allowed it to air dry. It is now in my hanging air dryer. After that it can be stored in an airtight container. Mullein is most used to treat coughs and congestion. It can be drank as a tea or decoction, or made into a cough syrup. It blends well with Thyme Leaf for treating coughs and congestion. Some people smoke the leaf to clear lung congestion. The leaves can also be made into a paste or applied directly to the skin for treating wounds and inflamed skin. If you harvest Mullein, take only the outer leaves, allowing the plant to continue growing, late summer it will produce a tall yellow flower stem. Just finished my “nosh box” from The Fearless Chef, very satisfying! Served me as a light meal for one (with wine of course!) could easily have been an appetizer for two. Arugula pesto, eggplant caponata, olive tapenade, jarlesburg, fresh mozzarella and grapes. Oh and some roasted red peppers!
