Every Spring I look forward to the return of aquilegia (columbine) in my garden. There are a wide variety of folk names for this beautiful flower, including granny's bonnets; lion's herb; fool's hat; doves in the ark; and granny jump out of bed. The name aquilegia is derived from the Latin for eagle, due to the curved nectaries on the back of the flower, said to resemble eagle talons. Columbine comes from the Latin for dove, due to the same features being compared to a group of five doves, gathered together. So we have links to two very different birds, embodying very different qualities. The eagle, a symbol of power and the dove, associated with peace. Aquilegia features in mythology and folklore from many areas of the world, including Greek, Roman, Celtic and Norse. Through these we find further associations with goddesses, love, wisdom, and the opening of portals to other worlds. Grown in the UK since the 13th Century, stories developed that lions ate the flowers for strength, and that rubbing the plant in a person's hands would grant them courage. I gather and dry the flowers every year (leaving plenty in place for wildlife) and use them in dolls, for courage to face whatever confronts us in life, to make those first steps towards change, maybe leaving things behind that we have outgrown, or embracing risk and starting down a new path! #plantspiritmedicine #spiritdoll #aquilegia #columbine

Wat lijkt het me heerlijk om ook brandnetels in onze tuin te mogen begroeten. Deze vraag stelde ik, nog niet zo heel lang geleden terwijl ik een rondje door de tuin maakte om te zien welke wilde kruiden er waren verschenen. Enkele dagen later maakte ik opnieuw een rondje door de tuin. Meerdere ini mini brandnetels keken mij met hun vurige blik aan. Ze leken er net zoveel plezier in te hebben als ik met het feit dat zij nu op deze plek waren verschenen. Brandnetel brengt leven daar waar het kruid verschijnt. Het kruid voedt de bodem waardoor er meer leven kan ontstaan. Daar waar de grond eerst was vervuild of uitgeput, brengt het kruid nieuwe voeding. Nieuwe kracht. Het verhaal en de kracht van dit kruid kent vele lagen. Brandnetel is een vurig kruid. Niet altijd een zachte heelmeester. Net zoals het prikken van dit kruid, niet altijd even zacht is. Het prikkend gevoel die de haartjes kunnen veroorzaken, roepen verschillende reacties op. Van onbegrip, irritatie, pijn, woede of ongemak. Het prikkende gevoel blijft vervolgens een tijdje aanhouden. Waarin we snel geneigd zijn de plant de schuld te geven voor dat onprettige gevoel. Het kruid maakt duidelijk iets bij ons los. Hier schuilt een waardevolle les. Waarin de brandnetel ons meeneemt. Waarin de brandnetel ons uitnodigt om verantwoordelijk te nemen voor dat wat we ervaren en voelen. Ook dat wat we onprettig vinden en daarom misschien liever wel wegstoppen om niet te hoeven voelen. Over de grenzen die we daarin wel of niet stellen. Brandnetel verteld ons daarmee ook over de manier hoe wij hier vervolgens mee omgaan. Het nare dat we ervaren. Hoe wij ervoor kiezen om te reageren: negeren, boos worden op de plant, snel een zalf smeren want het moet zo snel mogelijk weg.. Het kruid neemt ons daarin mee in de relatie met onze emoties en gevoelens. Het kruid leert ons wat onze eigen verantwoordelijkheid hierin is. Ook in moeilijke situaties en omstandigheden. En dat is een andere kijk op dat wat het kruid soms veroorzaakt. Het kruid dat zelf de remedie tegen wat het veroorzaakt in zich draagt. Net als jij.

This is the 2023 vintage of our best selling red tea. First Kiss. A deep & complex ancient tree red tea made by our dear friends Hung & Yen from the wild tea trees directly across the path from their production hut. These are trees under humble care of the Quang family, a little Red Dao family of three generations under one roof, with these trees as their backyard for the past 200 years at least. When we first started working together, I requested their production stocklists for the year, the only description that accompanied this tea was a poetic musing from the first time he produced and then sat with the tea. For the past years, I’ve felt it most serving to simply share his words in company to this tea. “When the first rays of spring's sun come to dispel the dull cold of long winter days, the old tea tree wakes from a long sleep, sprouting green shoots that stand out above musty spindly branches. I am a hobby Herbalist. I just adore plants and spending time with the earth outdoors in my garden. At this time of year in Canada, the first thing I do in the morning, go out in my bare feet and putter around my garden . Today, spring tonic for free! Who needs expensive green supplements when they just grow on your lawn? (Make sure your lawn is free of pesticides and herbicides, oh, and dog and cat visitations.) 1. Mullein leaf (big ones!) no 2. Nettles. These do not usually show up of their own accord. I planted them in my garden on purpose because they are so nutritious. I think I will chop these up and put them in my scrambled eggs. 3. Ground ivy. Some people find ground ivy stinky. I just love it! It reminds me of the smell of walking on my grandmother’s lawn and crushing it beneath my feet. It is in the mint family. 4. Dandelion of course! A little gentle liver detox. 5. Plantain leaves. 6. Catnip. 7. Apple mint. The supplement is also not wild. I planted it. Later in the season, I will share a fabulous lemonade recipe with it. I think if I had had time I would’ve become a professional Herbalist. I have spent so many hours looking for edible and medicinal plants where I live. But with the five other modalities, I have studied and incorporate into my healing work in a synergy that takes you through many levels of your being to clear out what hasn’t been moved with talking (energy healing, somatic experiencing, craniosacral therapy, family constellations, plant spirit medicine), I’ve just kept Herbalism as a hobby and leave the serious medicine to the experts. 😭😭 Being a mother is the greatest gift. My children are my greatest achievements and my biggest teacher's in life. They mean everything to me ❣️ ❣️ ❣️ My mum is absolutely everything to me. To all my beautiful friends whose Mumma's are no longer here, this is for you. I pray it gives you some comfort knowing that our mothers are always around us, somehow, somewhere. For a long time I have struggled being a present mother, I actually never saw myself with children. Perhaps the fear of not being good enough to raise children, not being able to guide them without my trauma dragging behind or to show them what healthy relationships are. I have really struggled with not having my own mum here to help me, at times I've crumbled without her touch. I have cried and howled into her old jumpers, trying to get every last scent remaining. I must admit I picked up some toxic traits from my mum. Not honouring my self worth, people pleasing, toxic relationships and being it all to everyone and leaving nothing in my own cup. I have also picked up some wonderful traits, a kind heart, a very open and non judgemental mind, an attentive listener, a love for music, travel, dance and adventure, to name a few. My mum has a wild and free Scottish spirit and I know that is what runs through me and my children. I am far from perfect but I know with the continued inner work I do, my children chose well. I know they chose me to guide them, I know that they came to me to help me heal our bloodlines, that whatever comes our way, we are well equipped to conquer it. To all the mum's in spirit, thank you for giving us a safe place in your womb, in your arms and in your heart. Thank you for guiding us from afar. Thank you for your unconditional love. May 7, 2024 Emergency surgery for Mandragora officinarum! 🚨🚨🚨 As summer is fast approaching and temps are rising up, my mandrakes are going back to sleep, one by one. We have also been having a pretty wet spring, so root rot is certainly an issue on my mind. I usually unpot dormant mandrakes to check on their health and growth progress. Checking their crowns for signs of rot is my first step to determine which root needs to get a thorough check immediately. As I was going through my newly dormant mandrakes, I noticed one of the officinarum roots had some soft tissue and rotting skin, which was a clear signal for me to unpot it for a thorough check. Lo and behold, there were some minor roots at the crown. But more alarming was one of the smaller roots was actually rotting and broke off from the main body as I unpotted it (Photo 2). There were also sections that felt a bit soft when squeezed (sign of beginning of root rot). I have also noticed some white wort-looking nubs on those soft sections. I ended up having to cut off the rotting parts. I then covered the root in cinnamon powder. Because of its anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, I have had good success in saving my mandrakes from minor rot using cinnamon powder. I'm going to let the root air out a day or two before deciding whether to replant it or to dry and preserve it. This root is only a little over 2 years old, and it's been growing quite nicely, so I don't feel quite ready to harvest it yet. Little teapot I made a while ago still waiting to be finished - it needs a handle and I'm not sure what to make it from 🤔 will driftwood be able to hold the weight? Also, a few half-finished incense bowls/copaleras inspired by my time in Mexico (I lived there for 2 years). Fun fact, we are having a huge electricity problem at the farm since many weeks, which means that both my tent and my kiln have no electricity and I cannot really work so well like that... All art projects have their own cycles, and it seems like the WAITING part is often overlooked. A very small percentage of projects just jumps right out of the brain into manifestation. At least not for me - most things I start will lay around on a shelf for quite a while, seemingly frozen in their current state, before they allow me to bring them towards completion. And from what I know, this is a crucial part of art. While the pieces await the time of their ripeness, the artist themself undergoes a journey of ripening so that they can be the person that finishes the piece in the way it is meant to be finished... Things don't happen, they BECOME. I have also been struggling since badly fracturing my radial head joint nearly a year ago, I had two surgeries, they first tried to reconstruct it but it failed so I got a whole new joint replacement which seemed to be going OK but now it's not, causing me quite chronic pain and I'm restricted in what I can do, anyway I will be having another surgery soon for them to completely re do it, plus repair ligaments and carpal tunnel, so there will be another few months of rehab, so I guess what I'm saying is I will be out of action again for a bit! 🫠 So in the meantime I am taking one day at time trying to find joy in the small things, I'm so happy that my garden is coming back to life with the cooler weather. ♡ #Dandelion #makeawish #herbalgarden #plantspiritmedicine
"I had the opportunity to participate in The Shamanic Herbalism Apprenticeship Pathways 1 and 2 in person with Heidi. Over 5 months a small group of local women met to journey together which created a long-lasting connection. Whilst I was first drawn to the apprenticeship to deepen my plant spirit connection and learn more about herbalism, after the first couple of weeks I realised it was going to be that and a whole lot more! Heidi’s gift for holding space and providing a safe, nurturing environment to surrender and share allowed me to drop into self-discovery on a whole new level. The birth work in particular unravelled parts of my psyche - deep rooted wounding’s and birth imprints that had been unconsciously playing out in my life showed themselves. Whilst working with the beautiful plant allies, with grace and gratitude I gave respect and reverence to the parts of me which were once hidden and with courage and awareness I was able to transform these challenging stories into long lasting medicine. Along with the deep inner work that beautifully unfolded, overall Pathways 1 and 2 was a fun, embodied and playful experiential journey, with deep nature connection, journeying, shared experiences and practices, and unfiltered honest group sharing. I thank Heidi immensely for sharing her wisdom and the work of the flower codes and also gratefully thank the plants for their role in my journey as teachers and allies."
