Do you want really in-depth knowledge about how to work with plants and people? 🌿 If that describes you, then I know David Winston’s two-year foundational course in clinical herbalism will be amazing! And who knows? I may see you there! 🌿 Enrollment for his 2024-2026 foundational program is open now. Class starts in September and there are prerequisites (plus an admissions process), so don’t delay if you’re interested! 🌿 David is an herbal teacher who attracts serious students. About half of his students are medical professionals. The other half are folks who’ve been self-studying herbal medicine on their own or have taken multiple classes in herbalism and want to catapult their know-how to the next level. Many go on to use what they learn from David professionally in some way. 🌿 I’ve studied a lot with David Winston over the years, mainly through one-off classes. I love the way he teaches – like a firehose of important knowledge that is firmly rooted in his love of the plants. 🌿 I’ve already done many years of clinical training and I loved it all… and now I am seriously considering David’s program, as well. I haven’t made a decision yet. But it has been a lot of fun to think about! 🌿 To check out David’s program, type 1234RF and I’ll send you a link where you can see all the details. 🌿 I'm proud to promote David's course as an affiliate partner. 🌿 #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #botanicalmedicine #herbalism #herbalist #herbswithrosalee #herbs #herbalremedies #wildmedicine #naturalremedies #plantsheal #medicinalplants #herbnerd #plantnerd

How well do you know violets? "Violet’s energetics mirror the places where they love to thrive. Cooling and moistening, violets can often be found growing in damp meadows, by shady streams, or in moist woods... Both the leaves and flowers are slightly sweet, demulcent (moist), and noticeably cooling. Violets are also softening. They reduce rigidity and allow flexibility. They move stuck and stagnant lymph. The simple sight of them can open our hearts, allowing a softening of our mood." - @rosaleedelaforet Want to learn more about the gifts of violets?💕 Click the link in our bio to sign up for HerbMentor. The journey has begun for our 2024 cohorts and our spring gatherings were nothing short of magical ✨ 'We're all speechless. You can just feel all the love that's gone into this.' 'It felt like I was coming home.' Intentions were set with each participant choosing from our 12 course herbs and placing them in the wooden engraved basket before receiving what can only be described as a very large box of goodies. I'll leave its contents to your imagination (some things have to be saved for the experience!), but I will divulge they included the beautiful course book everyone will be shaping into their own herbal heirloom over the coming seasons. Here they are!!! The fully open Erythronium americanum, aka Trout Lily, aka Dog Tooth Violet... 💛🌱 They are such pretty plants... I love their leaf pattern and their dramatic blooms. Ephemeral plants are so special to see each year, so I hope you can get out there an enjoy them before they are gone until next spring. 🌞 It is starting to become very busy here with all the things that are popping up and beginning to flower... plus all the work that needs to be done in the gardens! Eeeek!!! It is a blessing to work so close with nature, but it can feel like an overwhelming struggle at times too. Things move so quickly at times and you need to accept the spinning wheel of time, which brings constant change and the need to let go... important lessons for life! 🧬 I will do my best to keep up with posting lots of the magic that is happening here. I don’t have to grow herbs. There are a lot of people who do it better than I do. It doesn’t actually save me money when I begin to track the time it takes to start seeds, transplant, care for, harvest, and dry them. It’s much easier to buy my herbs from a company. But there’s something about growing a plant yourself- seeing it through its beginning stages from seed to seedling to maturity. Similar to being a parent and watching your child grow as you nurture and care for them, growing my own plants (but especially herbs) is a magical experience. It’s a lesson every time. ✨ I have little control over the outcome. All I can do is provide the best environment for growth. Infused with love and appreciation, hoping for the best, and navigating possible setbacks, I watch with hungry eyes as both my plants and my children have matured over the years. 🌿 I look at this plant- Ashwagandha- and know what it could become. Even though I’ve never grown this before, I know the power in that medicine when it matures. Like my children, I see the potential goodness that will work to heal others as I work toward healing the world in my small way. 💚 There are so many similarities between growing plants and growing children. So much growth for me, as well. I often don’t know what I’m doing- especially with ‘the first one.’ So many times I think something I’m doing is a waste of time. That I’m doing it wrong. 🌿 And then I look with Mother Eyes and my heart is filled. #herbalism #plantmedicine #ashwagandha #herbnerd

The heady scent of wild roses follows the breeze and the steady buzz of busy bees vibrates the air. Each year, I savor this season. 🌸 True wild roses are beautiful yet simple, with only five petals and a starburst of stamens in the center. 🌸 They range in color from pure white to deep pink and are almost always aromatic. 🌸 So how did we end up with the thousands of varieties of roses we see today? 🌸 Our obsession with the rose has led to breeding countless changes, so now roses can have numerous petals and come in a multitude of colors: white, yellow, pink, orange, red, blue, and everything in between. 🌸 Unfortunately, as many roses have been bred for visual beauty alone, much of their scent and medicinal properties have been lost along the way. 🌸 When choosing roses for your health, look for aromatic wild roses as your best source. If you don’t have access to wild roses, then domesticated roses could be used, although there are a couple of considerations. 🌸 First, only use roses that you know have not been sprayed with pesticides. Avoid using roses from florists for medicine or food, since they are almost always sprayed. 🌸 Second, I recommend using rose petals from flowers that are aromatic. If your roses don’t have any scent, then look for another source. 🌸 There are soooooo many ways we can work with rose – tea, tincture, honey, syrup, vinegar, or food. So it is important to source the best possible quality. 🌸 I’d love to hear from you! Do you have a favorite kind of rose? Or a way of working with roses? 🌸 #rose #rosarubiginosa #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #botanicalmedicine #herbalism #herbalist #herbswithrosalee #herbs #herbalremedies #wildmedicine #naturalremedies #plantsheal #medicinalplants #herbnerd #plantnerd

What makes a good herbal lotion? A good homemade herbal lotion is made with love and lots of healing herbs. One of the best ways to make a super luxurious lotion is to use infused oils in your lotion. Some of our favorite infused oils to make include calendula, cottonwood, and rose infused oil. Another key to making a good lotion is patience: sometimes emulsifying oil and water can be tricky, so it’s important to be patient with yourself throughout the process. That's why we created a how-to guide to making herbal lotion with a step-by-step video that shows you all the key steps for successfully creating a homemade herbal lotion. The tastes of herbs are baked into your bones The fascinating thing about taste is you don’t need to know what each taste ‘does’ at the top of your mind for a herb with that taste to have an effect on your body. You do if you want to create a herbal remedy or are working on something specific, but your body never lost that knowledge - your mother’s body, your grandmother’s body, all the way back to the earliest humans - you never lost that knowledge. It’s baked into your bones. This is why we’re not so much ‘learning’ herbal medicine as remembering herbalism, remembering our ancestral knowledge, remembering how to allow our bodies - part of nature - to heal. In natural medicine, the notion of “terrain” is a fundamental basis. The terrain is the innate part of our being, which we inherit at birth. Several terrains constitute who we are. 🍃 The organic terrain is the emunctory organs 🍃 The humoral terrain corresponds to all body fluids (lymph, blood, etc.) 🍃 The endocrine or glandular field refers to all the hormone-producing glands (hypothalamus, pituitary gland, etc.) 🍃 The immune system is the body’s defense capacity 🍃 The structural terrain includes bones, muscles, and fascia 🍃 The microbial terrain is the microbiota that inhabits us 🍃 The neuro-psychic field refers to the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems 🍃 The congenital terrain is heredity #terrain #naturalmedicine #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #botanicalmedecine #herbalist #herbalism #herbalistinthemaking #wildremedies #herbalremedies #naturesremedies #plantsheal #medicinalplants #herbnerd #plantnerd #apothecary #holistichealer #naturalhealing #naturalhealer #naturalhealth #healingplants #plantwisdom #plantmagic

Cleavers are nature’s Velcro! But besides being a fun herb to cling or cleave to our friends ona hike, it has many properties that make it a wonder plant ally for spring! Here are some ways cleavers can help support our bodies: 🌱 It helps to get our lymph fluid moving! Our only way to move our lymph is through exercise and musculoskeletal movement- until cleavers is employed! It can help to move lymph on a cellular level, gaining its reputation as a spring detox herb. 🌱 It nourishes our skin! Cleavers can be used both internally and externally for irritated and hot skin conditions, like burns, psoriasis, and eczema. It soothes and cools inflamed skin, but also nourishes skin that just needs some extra care. 🌱 It helps to address urinary tract issues! Hot, inflamed uti? Cleavers can help soothe and calm an infection, but also can be used as a preventative for those prone to urinary tract inflammation. Cleavers likes moist, shady areas, and likes to grow in woodlands. The characteristic cleaving, or sticking, sets it aside from other plants and although it stays low to the ground, can prop itself up on other plants to reach heights of 6 feet! Cleavers is a star in an herbal preparation called a succus- DM for a recipe! #herbalife #herbalists #herbal #herbalmedicine #herbalists #herbalresources #herbs #herbnerd #herbalmedicine #herbalmedicinemaking #cleavers #wildcraft #wildcrafting #wildcraftingherbs #wildcraftingwisdom

Hello from France! 🌿 I’ve traveled from Italy to southern France to spend time with friends and family – and to see many of my beloved plants. (Poppies are blooming!!!) 🌿 Last time I shared travel photos with you, I had just arrived in Florence and was about to start the herbal retreat. This week, I’m sharing some photos from the retreat and some from France. 🌿 It was so lovely to spend time with plant people at the herbal retreat and I feel like I’m still glowing from last week’s gathering! 🌿 The first photo shows the 1,000 year old castle we stayed in. On my first morning, I woke up to this stunning rainbow view. 🌿 I met so many fabulous herbalists and had a lovely time with my herbal friends, Rosemary Gladstar, Ola, Margi, and Maria. 🌿 It rained a lot! But we were all in great spirits, probably because we were so happy to be together. 🌿 There were so many highlights but one of my favorites was a spa day with Rosemary. Basically, we spent three hours giving each other facials, steams, etc. I was blissed out. 🌿 Here’s my big takeaway from the blissful week I spent in Italy at the herbal retreat: 🌿 do what you can to get to an herbal conference or gathering go on local plant walks find your local herbal community! 🌿 After fond farewells in Italy, I headed to France to spend time with friends and family. 🌿 My first stop was Tarascon in Provence. I've been here numerous times and I never tire of these quaint streets and castle. I also saw the famous monster, le Tarasque! 🌿 I'm spending more time in southern France with dear herbal friends. I'll be taking more photos along the way. 🌿 I'm excited to share more of the trip with you next week! Thanks for joining me on this photo journey! 🌿 #florence #france #italy #france #provence #travel #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #botanicalmedicine #herbalism #herbalist #herbswithrosalee #herbs #herbalremedies #wildmedicine #naturalremedies #plantsheal #medicinalplants #herbnerd #plantnerd

🤧 Today I will be addressing a question that came in about addressing seasonal allergies in a Kitchen Witch friendly way. 🧙🌿 The good news is that Mama Earth has given us a few weapons of choice when it comes to the dreaded symptoms of allergies during the changing of the seasons. The not so great news is that from my experience, many of these remedies work best over time as opposed to being a ‘quick fix’...so have patience when working with these plants and nutrients and give them time to help you combat allergies of the season. I hope these are helpful for those on the quest to combat seasonal allergies. Please send me your questions at [email protected] pertaining to herbalism, nutrition, and self care modalities and I will do my Kitchen Witch best to answer them and hopefully help you improve your quality of life while connecting more with our beautiful Mama Earth. From my heart to yours <3 xo, Greta The Kitchen Witch Thank you for supporting my work and for being a patron of my little shop (new collection drops tomorrow)🩷🙏 🖤A portion of purchases goes directly to Domestic Abuse Survivors (& other causes near & dear to our hearts) 🖤

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately intertwined in the world of herbs and plants. Although I studied herbal medicine for 4 years, I still felt a disconnect to the herbs themselves once I had left university. Whilst the degree is great for learning the science behind them, it was also a lot of rote learning from books and screens. I wanted to know the herbs more personally, rather than based on the labels placed upon them. Watching herbs grow wild here in Portugal has helped me understand their unique characteristics and how they each have a special purpose, including the weeds, especially the weeds. Watching chamomile flowers flourish in the dry dirt, and nettle grow big and wild all around us. It’s the weeds that flourish to replenish us, and they are accessible to everyone. Here in these photos I am plucking borage, a beautiful edible flower that can be used to decorate cakes, salads and make cooking feel more intentional and made with love. I also found out my great grandmother who lived in the mountains here in Portugal, was also a herbalist and would use local herbs to treat boils for the children in her community. It’s funny how our ancestors are often still so alive within us, we are just a continuation of them. 🌿✨ #herbalism #herbnerd #naturopathy #naturopathie #herbalmedicine #foraging #foragedfood #foragedflowers #natureasmedicine #edibleflowers🌸

It might sound strange to have a favorite weed, but dandelion has so many virtues that it’s an easy choice. 🌿 This common weed is often hated and poisoned by those preferring a “weed free” lawn, while those of us in love with dandelion and its many uses happily support it taking over our lawns. 🌼 Volumes could be written on the many uses of dandelion as food and medicine – indeed, they have been! 🌿 Every part of the dandelion can be used as food or medicine, making backdoor herbalism simple and easy, as it should be. 🌼 It’s a time-honored tradition in many countries in Europe to pick those spring dandelion greens and eat them, not only for their valuable nutrition, but also for their ability to stimulate healthy digestion. 🌿 Because this is such a delicious and health-promoting plant, it completely confounds me that so many people despise it. 🌼 Instead of rushing out with their harvesting tools to enjoy this free food and medicine, they spray harmful chemicals to kill them, which have been shown to have a high correlation with cancers. Children and developing fetuses are at the highest risk. 🌿 But humans aren’t the only ones affected. 🌼 Bees, insects and birds are also highly susceptible to these herbicides. 🌿 When I think about people spraying 80 million pounds of herbicides a year to eradicate a beautiful and beneficial plant, I can’t help but wonder, are we insane? 🌼 Why is there all this hatred against dandelions? I say it’s time to end our war on dandelions and embrace them for the many benefits they so freely offer. 🌿 I’d love to hear what YOU love about dandelions! 🌿 #dandelions #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #botanicalmedicine #herbalism #herbalist #herbswithrosalee #herbs #herbalremedies #wildmedicine #naturalremedies #plantsheal #medicinalplants #herbnerd #plantnerd

Considered one branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chinese herbal medicine is complementary to other branches of TCM, like acupuncture and massage. Consisting of natural dried leaves, bark, flowers, and roots, Chinese herbs possess a variety of characteristics to help the body in a myriad of ways. Most commonly, Chinese herbs are taken in the form of teas or pills. Chinese herbal medicine has virtually zero side effects and yields beneficial results. In particular, it is good for promoting the body’s ability to heal and recuperate. Some of the specific benefits of Chinese herbs include reducing inflammatory agents in the body, stimulating the body to release endorphins (natural pain-relieving chemicals), regulating the immune system, enhancing the effect of cancer treatment, and helping to control and/or reduce the side effects of cancer therapies. At GoodMedizen, we prescribe a personalized combination of different herbs for patients to directly target different areas of imbalance within the body and, thus, restoring harmony. 🍄🌿🕸️ Mycelium is a network of fungal threads, sometimes referred to as ‘The Woodwide Web’. Mushrooms are known as the ‘fruiting bodies’ of mycelial networks, as they sprout from mycelium. These networks are important for soil health; they help with the decomposition of organic materials and also provide nourishment for ecosystems through symbiotic mycorrhizal networks. We use a similar vernacular to describe the internet; speaking about ‘networks’ and ‘webs’. Inspired by these similarities, I’ve put together a resources page of books, articles and podcasts regarding plant medicine. I hope you find them inspiring & informative. ✨ Link to resources page in bio . . In herbal medicine, opposed to Western medicine, we believe that the body has the capacity to heal itself and is capable to self-maintain a certain inner balance. But sometimes, due to repetitive lifestyle mistakes, the organism gets overwhelmed, called metabolic saturation, and needs a little help to relaunch its self-maintenance ability. Drainage is that help, and is a very important principle in herbal medicine. The goal of drainage is to stimulate the organs responsible for the elimination of the toxic substances present in the organism. These organs, called emunctory organs, are the silent workers of the organism, but when something goes wrong, they start ringing the alarm bell and symptoms appear. These symptoms need to be listened to and their cause should be addressed, which is the role of the herbalist. Many tools are involved in this protocole in order to help the body detoxify and regenerate itself. This is the beauty of herbal medicine, helping the essence of Life to go back to its fundamental mechanism. #drainage #detox #homeostasis #emunctories #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #botanicalmedecine #herbalist #herbalism #herbalistinthemaking #wildremedies #herbalremedies #naturesremedies #plantsheal #medicinalplants #herbnerd #plantnerd #apothecary #holistichealer #naturalhealing #naturalhealer #naturalhealth #healingplants #plantwisdom #plantmagic

Spoilt myself with my least favorite thing 🤩 Yes, you read that correctly 😅 despite how much I love harvesting and admiring mushrooms, I actually don't enjoy eating them at all... However, I do love a really good chicken a la king and I really just wanted to indulge in the REAL thing, made with a variety of real mushrooms, not that fake packet powder stuff 🙄 I always have this weird impulse to buy mushrooms when I'm at the store but I just never have a reason to, because I don't eat them... but the result of this dish was superb and I'll definitely consider making it with real mushrooms again... and it'll give me a reason to feed my impulse and buy mushrooms when I'm at the store 🤣🤣🤣 I actually want to grow mushrooms, to be quite honest... I've even genuinely thought about where in my house I'd even put them... but this is another plant project that I'll eventually get around to one day when I have first completed all of my others that I keep starting 🙈 So, for now, I'll just enjoy eating the store bought ones in my sauces and soups until I've got my act together and ready to grow my own! But look how pretty they all are 😍🤩 no wonder I always want to buy them, lol !!! #Homestead #Homesteading #HomesteadLife #FarmLife #WildHarvest #MushroomHunting #WildMushrooms #Mushrooms #Foraging #MushroomSociety #mushroomhunter #MushroomSeason #Mushroom #Summer #LateSummer #SummerHarvest #Natural #OrganicGarden #OrganicFarming #HerbNerd #GreenThumb #GreenThumbs #NatureLover #NatureLoversGallery

🌿 Polygonatum spp. Solomon’s Seal 🌿 The Polygonatums, solomon’s seals, have long been worked with as deep medicinal tonics, and are a revered bone & joint support herb. The long bowing stems start to emerge early spring, adorned in white flower bells by beltaine (May Day). There are native american, european, & asian species, all attracting a host of pollinators & worked with for medicine. It is the root of Polygonatums that have been traditionally harvested in the autumn to make fresh medicine. The roots are dried for tisanes (herbal teas), or chopped into a fresh tincture. From @plantsforafuture pfaf.org :: Polygonatum biflorum :: “A poultice or a decoction of the fresh roots is applied to cuts, bruises, sores. Polygonatum odoratum :: “…in the form of a poultice…stimulates tissue repair, [& for] bruises, small wounds ” From @eclecticschoolofherbalmedicine :: “Solomon’s Seal is a sweet, moistening, slimy, demulcent [herb], that, unlike many slimy demulcents, works well in tincture. It promotes appropriate fluid production and movement to the fascia & connective tissue. It’s the most reliable structural system remedy I know, useful in both dry states, and connective tissue hypertonicity.” I find the fresh tincture to be one of the most delightful root remedies; sweet & earthy, uplifting & grounding, all at once. It’s been helpful in my community for sore knees & hips from long working hours & standing on one’s feet, especially on hard floor & for athletes. From @plantsforafuture pfaf.org :: “The roots are rich in starch, this can be extracted by beating or grinding the dried root, the starch can then be used to make bread or can be mixed in other foods such as soups” **This information is for educational purposes. Before ingesting any plant or mushroom, always do your own research and be 100% sure of identification. Consult your health care provider for possible drug/herb contraindications & precautions.**

🌿 Community Earth Day Celebration 🌍 This past Sunday we celebrated Earth Day with a Community Day at the Green Farmacy Garden! Families & friends gathered to enjoy the garden, connection, pond picnics, eco-art, & more! There was fresh tisane (herbal tea) & herbal infused water from the garden to be enjoyed by the patio fire all day. The garden welcomed children & adults to partake in a day of fellowship, exploration, creativity, nature connection, and native tree planting! 🌳 Nature educator, longtime friend of the garden, & Jim’s former student, Julie, lead children & adults to create their own eco-prints using fresh plants from the garden! We harvested our specimens, arranged them on natural cotton cloth, pounded their colors & silhouettes in, then dipped them in an iron solution to bind the pigments! The chemical reaction changed some of the colors into deeper surprise hues, & bonded the pigments to be sun-fade & wash proof! Everyone had a joy tapping into their creativity, exploring natural colors & shapes, & slowing down to get just the right plant prints. The end results are absolutely breathtaking, & we are all excited to experiment more. 🌸 While eco-printing was happening, a heartfelt engagement to connect with nature was facilitated by Michael & Meadow during Climate Cafe. Participants gathered in the large lower gazebo, tucked down by the wood edge & wild pond at the brink of the field of possibilities. Folks were encouraged to sit with a plant or nature being’s energy in the garden, & relax in meditative moments. They gathered together to share & reflect on their quiet time if called to, and converse about the current state of our climate, & positive actions to take. 💙 ..(con’t in comments or full list on Facebook, linktree in profile)

💜 Viola species Violets & Pansies 💜 Viola leaves are another favorite spring wild edible green, & probably my favorite edible wild flower. There are hundreds of Viola species and most of them are worked with for food or medicine interchangeably, with the exception of yellow varieties. Viola leaves & flowers are a long beloved medicinal herbal remedy with cooling, moistening, toxin cleansing, anti-inflammatory, & anti-tumor properties. They are considered a mucilaginous, expectorant, lymphatic stimulant, & antiseptic herb. Violas are high in vitamins A & C, soluble fiber, rutin, & quercetin. Fresh Viola leaves are a wonderful base or addition to salads, pesto, & sandwiches, and make a lovely tea fresh or dried. They can also be steamed, sautéed, or added to soups as a nutrient-dense thickener. The leaves are a traditional soothing herbal remedy for many skin conditions such as acne, eczema, impetigo, & itching when made into a tea or applied as a fresh poultice, infused oil, or salve. They are also a traditional herbal remedy for respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, mucus, coughs, asthma, & general lung health. Viola flowers have the same edible & medicinal properties as the leaves, and the violet ones impart vibrant blue-purple to purple-pink hues when made fresh into a tea, syrup, or infused vinegar. The tea in particular is a really fun activity to make with children; when you add a base such as baking soda the tea turns blue-green, and when an acid like lemon juice is added it turns bright pink! In Jim Duke’s book The Green Pharmacy, he writes about pansies, Viola tricolor, and other Violas containing the compound rutin which naturopaths often recommend 20 milligrams 3 times a day for the treatment of glaucoma. Jim calculated that one fresh pansy or Viola flower would offer about 20 milligrams of rutin! He also writes that rutin is a helpful compound to prevent & treat some varicose & spider veins, as rutin helps maintain the strength & integrity of capillary walls. Jim states that medical texts suggest 20 to 100 milligrams of rutin a day can significantly strengthen the capillaries.

Last weekend at the Green Farmacy we had two days of fun, full events! Saturday was the monthly herbal medicine making class, with the theme of Spring Wild Edibles. Participants learned about common spring wild edibles including chickweed (Stellaria media), violets (Viola spp.), stinging nettles (Urtica dioica), garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and gout weed (Aegopodium podagraria). We took a walk on the land to learn about identifying, harvesting, and medicinal & edible properties of the plants in season. After our walk we processed our harvest & made a wild pesto to enjoy together! Sunday CEI volunteer Terri lead an informative bird class & observation walk. We learned about several resources for identifying birds, tracking their migrations, recording our bird sightings publicly, & seeing other birders’ sightings. We then took a walk around the garden with binoculars in hand to put what we had learned to practice. We heard and/or spotted 17 species in the short 30 minute walk! (see last picture for list) After a lunch break we got to work building brush pile habitats for birds along the woodland edge. Everyone was super enthusiastic about building their bird homes, & we look forward to seeing which species choose to inhabit these new spaces! 1*:: Event welcome area: Tisane du jour (herbal tea of the day), teacups, & some of Jim Duke’s books 2*:: Herbal medicine making participants processing their harvest 3*:: Making wild pesto together! 4*:: Tasty snacks to share 5*:: Terri’s birding tips & resources presentation 6*:: Bird walk 7*:: Participants moving wood debris to build bird habitat brush piles 8*:: Brush pile build group photo! 9*:: Examples of some participants’ bird habitat brush piles 10*:: Birds heard and/or sighted at Green Farmacy Garden Sunday April 14th 11:30am - 12pm

This week our friends from MOM’s Organic Market of College Park @momsorganicmarket volunteered with us to help plant native nut trees in the woods here! Native nut trees play a major role in feeding wildlife, and unfortunately they have become few & far between. Nuts offer valuable nutrition for a wide variety of critters including squirrels, bears, chipmunks & deer, as well as birds such as jays, woodpeckers, wild turkeys, & wood ducks, and humans too! The dense nutrition of nuts that are ripe in autumn is vital for wildlife to pack on the calories before winter. Many nut trees, including some we planted, are also host species & food sources for many insects & butterflies. Oaks in particular are trees that support the widest range of wildlife, & we planted 3 white oaks (Quercus alba) with our volunteers! We also planted shellbark & shagbark hickories (Carya laciniosa & ovata) and chestnuts (Castanea dentata x sp.), with more to come! The current mature trees in the woods at the Green Farmacy are not very diverse, with a majority being tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera), beech (Fagus grandifolia), and some maples (Acer spp.). This week’s tree planting was another project supported by a grant we were awarded from The Chesapeake Bay Trust to help increase the biodiversity of native plant species in the woods here. Thank you @chesapeakebaytrust , we are so grateful for your generous support & wide-reaching efforts for conservation!

❀ Stellaria media, chickweed ❀ Stellaria media is probably my favorite springtime wild edible green. It is a deeply nourishing food & medicine, adored by countless generations before us. It is a superb lymphatic mover, a testament to Mama Nature’s divine timing in offering just what we need at just the right time. After heavy winter meals often lacking in fresh-from-the-Earth nutrients, & our typically more slow, stagnant lifestyles, Stellaria is a most welcome mover of the body’s fluids & soul’s energy, preparing us for the upsurging season of regrowth, creative energy, & inspiring movement. ❀ Stellaria media is a mat-forming, self-sowing annual ground cover. It blooms from early to mid spring, often returning in autumn, with teeny white flowers at the ends of the stems. The flowers appear to have 10 petals, but are really 5-petals that are deeply divided. The leaves are opposite, toothless & stalkless. The stems can be erect though typically sprawl along the ground, rooting at nodes. ❀ I find chickweed tastiest eaten fresh in salads & sandwiches, though it can also be cooked as any other vegetable in various dishes. It is also made into a lovely green-fresh tea, from the fresh or dried whole plant. Chickweed is rich in antioxidants, saponins, vitamins A, C & B, as well as calcium, fiber & protein. ❀ Medicinally, Stellaria media is worked with as poultices, oils & salves to help with itchy skin irritations including rashes & eczema. It is also made into a tincture from the whole, fresh plant. It cools inflammations both internally & externally. ❀ Stellaria poultice is also wonderful for eye health with its cooling & moistening properties which can soothe discomfort, dryness, styes, & allergy irritations, another testament to Mama Nature’s divine timing in providing what we need. ❀ **Before ingesting any plant or mushroom, always do your own research and be 100% sure of identification. 🌿 Urtica dioica stinging nettle The gardens first nettle harvest was last Tuesday, in tune with the full moon. Super foods have been popular the last several years, & my vote would be for Urtica to be one of the most talked about & worked with! Urtica dioca, stinging nettle, is likely the most nutrient dense wild spring green gifted in abundance. Urtica emerges just as the spring equinox is turning the wheel. It’s opposite, toothed leaves flaunt a purple underside during still-chill weather growth, & are decorated with tiny hollow hairs called trichomes. These hairs act like microscopic hypodermic needles, introducing our body to the plant forms of histamine, acetylcholine, serotonin, and formic acid. Formic acid is the same chemical that some ant species inject humans with when they bite. The trichomes in stinging nettle are a means by which the potent medicine is transferred to the body; urtication, the act of a burning/itching sensation, is an ol’folk practice working with nettles, to smack oneself with the stems to relieve arthritis & gout pain. Urtication is likely how nettle got it’s botanical genus name, Urtica. Jim Duke favored nettle urtication on his lower legs more than medications(over the counter or prescription “pharmaceutical poisons”, in Dr. Duke’s words) for gout relief. The nettles’ sting of acetylcholine & formic acid does in fact stimulate the capillaries, and improve blood & lymph flow, which is how it is so effective at reducing inflammation & helping support the body’s more speedy healing process. As Jim Duke was also a proponent of “let food by thy medicine & medicine by thy food”, stinging nettles was one of his favorite herbs for mineral rich nutrition. He would likely add nettle to the modern “super food” lists, as it is a well-recognized traditional nutrient dense wild food. Urtica dioica is extremely high in fiber, calcium, magnesium & zinc, as well as rich in amino acids, proteins, potassium & iron. **Before ingesting any plant or mushroom, always do your own research and be 100% sure of identification. Caulophyllum thalictroides (kaw-lo-FIL-um) (thal-ik-TROY-deez) Blue Cohosh ❦ This is one of our most stunning & botanically unique native plants in the woods at the Green Farmacy Garden. This photo series shows the mystical growth from deep purple sprout to bright yellow flower. Caulophyllum thalictroides unfurls & blooms quickly in early spring. It is one of our earliest blooming herbaceous woodland flowers, and an early nectar source for pollinators, especially early solitary bees. In the second picture, Caulophyllum displays the beginnings of its enchanting unfurling dance. The perennial, slowly spreading rhizome pushes the deep purple bud sprout through the late winter earth. Once its grown a few inches tall it reveals miniature flower buds & leaves, entangled together to chase the lengthening spring sun. In the fifth & sixth picture, the unique leaf & flower stem structure is evident. Caulophyllum comes from the Greek kaulos (stem) & phyllon (leaf), referring to the way the main stalk branches into 3 stems for each compound leaf. When a stalk is mature it will make a fourth stem from which flower clusters & another compound leaf will grow, as seen in the fifth picture. In the sixth picture the large leaf structure is becoming more visible, as we see the unfurling of several leaflets at the top of each compound leaf stem. As seen in the eighth picture, the leaflets are usually tri-divided & subtly lobed, with a gorgeous blue-green sheen. In the seventh picture the deep purple stalk is lightening to it’s pale blue hue, showcasing how Caulophyllum got it’s common name of blue cohosh. Blue cohosh & black cohosh have rhizomes with some similar medicinal properties for women’s reproductive health & birth labor, but they are not botanically related. Cohosh is an Algonquin word meaning “gnarly root”. Once established, blue cohosh will form a bushy growth habit, as seen in the ninth picture, sending up a few new stalks each year. The yellowy-mauve, six petaled flowers sit at the tip of their own little stem, growing from the top of the main stalk, surrounded by leaflets.

Our native woodland plants & spring ephemerals are continuing their enchanting re-emergence. We have a small variety of native herbaceous plants in our woods, and with the generous help of the Chesapeake Bay Trust @chesapeakebaytrust grant we were awarded, we have plans to add many more this year! We are so grateful for their support in our goal to add more native biodiversity to our woods, and help reinforce the stream beds and buffer zones on the land here. 1 & 2*:: Jeffersonia diphylla :: twinleaf. You can see the “twin leaves” it is named for in the second picture 3*:: Pachysandra procumbens in flower :: mountain/Allegheny spurge. This is a great shade-loving ground cover alternative to the aggressive non-native Pachysandra terminalis commonly planted. 4*:: Claytonia virginica :: spring beauty 5*:: Packera aurea :: golden ragwort. This is another great option for a native, shade-loving ground cover. This will fill an area faster than the native Pachysandra, and potentially compete with aggressive non-native plants due to its evergreen basal leaf habit. 6*:: Trillium sessile :: toadshade. This unique native spring ephemeral is considered “threatened” in Michigan and “endangered” in New York by the United Plant Savers @unitedplantsavers . Many other species of this plant fall under these categories in various other states around the country. 7*:: Mertensia virginica :: Virginia bluebell flower buds 8*:: Stellaria pubera :: star chickweed. This is our native chickweed, different from the non-native chickweed Stellaria media. 9*:: Podophyllum peltatum :: mayapple leaves at various stages of unfurling 10*:: Xanthorhiza simplicissima :: yellowroot tiny flowers

Forsythia suspensa This traditional Chinese medicine plant is a favorite in ornamental plantings, though few people likely know of it’s edibility & long history as an herbal remedy. You may have seen the bright yellow flowers blooming in hedgerows around your neighborhood or shopping areas. Here at the garden, we let most of our forsythias grow in a more natural “weeping” form (pictures 6&7), though the neatly trimmed hedgerows create a much more dense flower bloom. Forsythia suspensa is native to China & East Asia, and is an early nectar source for pollinators. The 4-petaled flowers bloom before the plant leafs out, readily attracting the pollinators. The bright yellow flowers are edible, & have a mild bitter taste. The green calyxes (pictures 4&5) impart more bitterness, so I like to just pick the individual petals off; they’re a fun addition to salads! Though I’ve never tried it myself, there are many recipes for forsythia syrup & jelly available. Here at the garden, Forsythia suspensa is included in several plots including Colds & Flu, Liver, and Fever. It was one of Dr. Jim Duke’s go-to remedies whenever he felt a cold or flu coming on. He would always include honeysuckle in his tea with forsythia, as they are a revered pair in traditional Chinese medicine. Lian qiao is forsythia’s name in Chinese medicine and has been a staple remedy in this tradition for thousands of years. It is the unripe yellow fruit & seeds ground together that are worked with for a myriad of ailments. **Before ingesting any plant or mushroom, always do your own research and be 100% sure of identification.
