How do you source your herbal medicines? 🌿 Do you find them in nature? Order them from a regenerative farm? Grow them yourself? There are pros and cons to each! Many practitioners come to herbal medicine when they feel a deep connection to plants and the environment. In exchange for using their medicinal properties, it is our responsibility to become environmental stewards and protect these species from harm. 🌎 As a budding herbalist, I have been using cultivated organic herbs for my patients, and dabbling in homegrown organic herbs for myself and my family. Occasionally, I’ll select a small amount of wild mushrooms when there is an abundance. 🍄‍🟫 But these plants aren’t to just be taken without thought. A reciprocal relationship should be developed for any method of sourcing. ❤️ How are you supporting sustainable herbal practices? ✨ #veterinaryherbalism #sustainablesourcing #westernherbalmedicine #holistichealing #herbnerd

Ribwort in flower. Latin name: Plantago lanceolata. I was delighted to see this plant appear in the garden as it's one I use all the time It's a key ingredient in my cough be off tea in it's dried form and I use ribwort tincture in blends for all my chesty patients as it soothes the lung tissue beautifully. It's what we herbalists call a trophorestorative which means its a tonic herb which nourishes and restores the organ it has an affinity for. The Hawthorns (Crataegus spp) are almost in flower! Did you see them last year - they were magnificent! Hawthorn is another indispensable herb in my practice. It is an amazing heart tonic, and it does this in part by encouraging the heart to nurture itself with improved blood flow through the coronary arteries. It is brilliant also for improving the strength of the heartbeat, and helps keep LDL cholesterol levels under control. It is an excellent addition to an individualised prescription for all kinds of cardiovascular issues. If that weren’t enough, Hawthorn works also on an energetic level aiding an opening of the heart, so can also help with heartache, grief and emotional pain! #hawthorn #crataegusmonogyna #herbalmedicinemaking #foraging #herbalism #herbalist #herbalistsofinstagram #westernherbalmedicine #herbstudies #theherbalmedicineclinicboyle #boyle #roscommon

Ever wondered what a Naturopathy consultation looks like? Here’s what you can expect from an initial appointment with our Naturopath… 🌿 OVERVIEW The first thing to note is that Naturopathy takes a patient-centred approach to health care, which means your Naturopath will pay close attention to YOU as an individual – there are no cookie-cutter treatment plans! Your Naturopath is there to advise and facilitate your path to improved health, with you and your involvement central to the process – it is a process of collaboration. 🌿 CASE-TAKING This is where your Naturopath listens to you and discusses your health concerns with you. You will be asked specific details of your condition and symptoms, about your past health and medical history, as well as some questions on related health issues. For example, if you have a digestive issue, you may be asked about work, stress, and sleep, which are all things which can contribute to digestive issues. 🌿 GOAL-SETTING This is where you discuss what health outcomes you would like to achieve and a realistic time frame for doing so. Your Naturopath will work with you to help develop goals which are manageable for you. 🌿 TREATMENT PLAN Your Naturopath may prescribe some herbal medicine or nutritional supplements to help with your condition, as well as changes in diet, eating habits and lifestyle that might be helpful for you. 🌿 NEXT CONSULTATION At the end of your consultation, a follow-up appointment will be booked to monitor your progress and make any changes to your treatment plan in order to keep you on track for better health. So that’s a bit of a snapshot about what to expect from your first Naturopathy consultation! Keen to book in? Just tap the “Book Naturopathy” button in our bio or give the clinic a call on 9427 8848 . . . . . #NaturopathMelbourne #MelbourneNaturopath #WesternHerbalMedicine #HerbalistMelbourne #MelbourneHerbalist #Richmond3121 #BridgeRdRichmond #Bodyactive #BodyactiveHealth

🌱Based on traditional methods and home-remedies of the past, herbal medicine has been improved and perfected through modern research. 🌱Herbs are both a natural alternative and complementary to pharmaceutical medication.  They can be taken as a supplement, as a tincture liquid or a tea. Different herbs are more effective in certain forms. 🌱Different herbs combined together have a synergistic effect to create positive health outcomes. Herbal tinctures have the benefit of hand-picking the different actions you need together in the one medicine! 🌱As you can see in the picture, there's so much they can do 😊 🌱Are herbs for you? Find out through a Naturopathic consultation.

On Saturday I strained and bottled the chamomile (Matricaria recutita) tincture. It had been macerating in a dark cupboard for around 4 weeks. Matricaria is indispensable in my clinic as it is such an easy herb to work with and is generally well tolerated. It is gentle on the body but has a powerful action. Matricaria is a nervine herb that soothes without being sedating, and is a friend to everyone of all ages. It is brilliant for over heated fractious children and teething babies too. Matricaria is also slightly bitter, so aids digestion by supporting liver function and it contains inulin that feeds gut bacteria. It is an excellent tea to take following a course of antibiotics. Matricaria also has skin soothing properties, reduces inflammation and has a mild anti microbial effect, which is why I use it in my ointment formulated for nappy rash. #chamomile #matricaria #herbalmedicinemaking #herbalmedicine #westernherbalmedicine #herbalism #herbalist #herbalistsofinstagram #herbsforhealth #theherbalmedicineclinicboyle #boyle

Do you love spring?! 💐 We are now 1/3 of our way into the year, and as we forge ahead into the spring season, it is important to align ourselves with the energy found in nature. Spring is an invigorating time when everything reawakens and starts to come back to life. Energetically, spring is a time of transition, marked by an upward and outward movement. Sometimes transitions can be very welcome, and while we may feel ready to spring forward and leap right into the summer months, it might also be a draining and challenging time. It is important to honor this transitional experience (its ups and downs) because it is what prepares us for the season that comes next: summer! ☀️ While it's important to honor this transition, sometimes transitioning can be hard and painful. That's why it's so important to find our plant allies that align with the energy and momentum of the season. Spring herbs, such as dandelion (nettle is another favorite), can provide valuable support during this transitional period. Dandelion is one of my favorite spring herbs. I like to drink dandelion tea for sure, but my favorite way to incorporate dandelion is to mix it into my springtime pesto 💜 Let me know below 👇 if you like this kind of content, and I'll keep posting more! #holisticnutritionist #dandelion #westernherbalmedicine #dandelionpesto #functionalfoods

“The Doctrine of Signatures” is an ancient theory used by traditional herbalists, which states that plants give us clues with the way they look, taste, and are shaped as to what body parts they can treat. Traditionally, herbalists discovered the medicinal use of plants based on the Doctrine of Signatures. For example: Carrots - Beta Carotene - Eye health Ginger - Gingerol - Gut health Grapes - Resveratrol - Lung health Celery - Vitamin K - Bone health When I was peeling the pomegranate today, I was fascinated by the rich ruby-red color of the pomegranate, and straight away I knew that it is good for cardiovascular health. I went to my reference book to check it out. Yes, it did mention that it is good for reducing LDL and also prevents the buildup of plaque in the arteries. The antioxidants in pomegranate help in reducing blood pressure. Pomegranate is high in tannins and is especially useful when you have a productive cough and helps to break down the phlegm. The fruit and bark of the pomegranate are used against intestinal parasites. Don’t throw away the pomegranate peel. Wash them, dry them, and powder it, then store it in an airtight container. Pomegranate peel powder or the husk is a great prebiotic that feeds your good gut bacteria in the large intestine. What a fascinating fruit pomegranate is! “We are what we eat” Have a great weekend ~ Bhuvi ❤️ #herbalwhisperer #clinicalherbalistinmelbourne #herbalistinmelbourne #pomegranatepeel #herbaltinctures #melbourne #westernherbalmedicine

The comfrey (Symphytum officinale) basking in the spring sunshine. Comfrey’s name comes from the Latin word “confervere” which means to heal. The bees love the flowers, and the leaves and roots are used medicinally. It has a long traditional use that was very safe. Unfortunately we are not allowed to make internal medicines from comfrey due to theoretical concerns about the pyrrolizidine alkaloids. This is a real shame, as it was a very safe and effective herb for a whole range of conditions. We do still use it topically though and it is extraordinarily effective for things like bruising, strains, sprains, broken bones, blunt force injuries, muscular pain, inflammation, arthritic joints, and shallow wounds. It has been scientifically proven to stimulate tissue regeneration. In fact, it is so effective, that it shouldn’t be used for deep open wounds or puncture wounds.as it can cause them to heal at the top before the deeper parts have healed causing complications. Comfrey leaves also make the most excellent fertiliser for your garden. Who comes to see a Naturopath at Bodyactive? Let’s answer that question for you! Most of the people we see are office workers, between the ages of 25 – 50 and tend to work in admin, management, IT, HR, or PR. Our naturopathic clients work in a range of different professions, many of them being lawyers, accountants, account managers or real estate agents. They are usually people who are health-conscious and like to exercise regularly. Concerns about diet and digestion, as well as seeking support for managing specific digestive disorders, or dealing with stress and anxiety are often top priorities. Some of the people we support naturopathically have hormonal issues such as those conditions related to menstruation, fertility, and menopause. A lot of the time they are often feeling tired, rundown, and also find themselves suffering from frequent infections due to being under significant stress. They usually have a long-term health issue that they need help and assistance in managing, which is why they have sought the holistic, well-rounded approach taken in naturopathic care. In essence, we usually see a variety of people with a range of health issues who tend to work in the corporate sector. Naturopathy is a modality which can be supportive for a range of people experiencing a diversity of different health issues, and we do indeed see a diversity of people from all walks of life coming in for naturopathic support. Come and say hello at Treacle Market! On Sunday 28th April you'll find me in the Butter Market for @treaclemarket in Macclesfield. It would be lovely to see you and say hello! The Butter Market is adjacent to St Michael's Church, just to the left hand side of the church, on Churchside the cobbled street. (there's a map in my future events highlights) It's under cover and I'm really excited to be taking part this month. I'll be chatting all things herbal medicine and will have flyers on my latest special offer for consultations, along with my next workshop in May and some gorgeous herbal goodies. As a bit of background info - the Butter Market was originally built in 1823 as part of the Town Hall and was used as a market full of local produce - eggs, cheese, butter, fruit and vegetables brought to the market by farmers and their families. The market eventually closed in 1939. So I won't be bringing cheese and butter but herbs! I really hope to see you there, Treacle Market runs from 10am-3.30pm. The Myth of Garlic in Dogs and Cats ——— If you’re a responsible pet owner, you’ve surely looked into possible toxic foods that could put your pet at risk. Everything from grapes to chocolate… but what about GARLIC? 🧄 The conversation about garlic and dogs is somewhat misleading, because most research studies base their findings on the effects of garlic extracts, excessive dosages, and unnatural delivery methods. Researchers rarely use fresh garlic for dogs because measuring the constituents of whole plant medicine is challenging. But what if I told you could safely feed your dog garlic each day, with extraordinary benefits! ✅ Garlic (Allium sativum) has historically been used for coccidiosis in poultry, cough and bronchitis in dogs, insect bites, tumors in dogs, worms, jaundice, and rheumatism. ✅ Recent research shows that garlic powder can lower serum cholesterol and triglycerides. ✅ It has anti-tumor and cytotoxic actions in vitro, and suppresses tumor proliferation in vivo, making it a possible adjunctive treatment for cancer patients. ✅ Garlic has also successfully been used in the treatment of hookworms and roundworms, and has a broad range of antibacterial and anti-fungal activities. ‼️Higher doses CAN potentiate adverse effects such as hemolytic anemia, however little primary documentation exists for garlic as a cause of hemolytic anemia at normal doses. Garlic should not be used in patients that have inflammation of their gastric mucosa.‼️ ⚠️ As always, talk to your veterinarian first before starting herbal remedies, as there are some patients in which garlic use may be contraindicated. Proper dosing and monitoring should be discussed to prevent toxicity from too high doses. ⚠️ #alliumsativum #garlicfordogs #foodasmedicine #westernherbalmedicine #holisticvetmed #herbalmedicine #herbalremedies

Corn silk (Stigma maydis) 🌽 the shiny silky strands cocooned between the kernels and the outer sheath/husk, is a well-known herb traditionally used in TCM and Native American medicine. Corn silk and the outer husk are normally discarded when corn is prepared for eating, but corn silk is a great herb with potential medicinal value. Corn silk tea, known as ‘oksusu-suyeom-cha’ in Korean, is consumed in Korea. Koreans also make a tea from roasted corn known as ‘oksusu cha’. I’m planning to try that recipe soon. Sounds yum! Corn silk is high in flavonoids and terpenoids. It has diuretic properties and is used to treat mild urinary tract infections. Corn silk contains stigmasterol and sitosterol. Stigmasterol has potent pharmacological effects such as anticancer, anti-osteoarthritis, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, immunomodulatory, antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. The combination of turmeric and corn silk has been studied to treat gout. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that the ethanol extract of corn silk contains bioactives showing antioxidant, hyperglycemia reduction, anti-depressant, anti-fatigue, and effective diuretic agent properties. An easier way to benefit from corn silk is to brew it as a tea. You can use fresh corn silk or dry it and use it to make tea later. Add 1 tbsp of corn silk to 1 cup of boiling water and steep it for 5 minutes before drinking. Enjoy it hot or warm. Herbal Medicine Feature: Salvia officinalis – Sage (Lamiaceae family) 🌿 The leaves of the Sage plant are a favourite kitchen herb, but this Mediterranean shrub has also been used medicinally for a very long time. Traditionally, Sage was used for a range of varied purposes, including things like supporting weak digestion, for colds and sore throats, and even headaches. Sage has been used to reduce inflammation in the mouth, gums, and throat, helping with conditions like laryngitis, pharyngitis, and tonsilitis. Rubbing the fresh leaves on and around the teeth and gums are said to strengthen the gums. A gargle of Sage tea is a classic remedy for a sore throat and can work well with other herbs like Thyme and Rosemary. Sage is also commonly used to support women through the menopausal transition, as it helps to reduce hot flushes and can help with night sweats as well. While Sage in cooking can be okay, therapeutic doses of Sage are generally not advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding as it is traditionally used to prevent milk flow. Sage is very easy to grow in the garden and it can get quite woody, so make sure you prune it back as needed and harvest the leaves regularly. It is very easy to propagate from cuttings, so grab some from a friend, or donate some cuttings to others if you have a prolific sage plant growing! 🪴 Our Naturopath is available to prescribe herbal medicines here at Bodyactive, so if you are interested just click on the “Book Naturopathy” button via the link in our bio. . . . . . . #SageLeaves #SalviaOfficinalis #MedicinalHerbs #NaturopathMelbourne #MelbourneNaturopath #WesternHerbalMedicine #MelbourneHerbalist #Bodyactive #BodyactiveHealth #Richmond3121 #BridgeRoadRichmond #BridgeRdRichmond

This morning, I listened to a talk on some clever health technology to help undo the mess humans have inflicted upon ourselves. There are so many bio hacks and age-reversing gadgets on the market, but I can't help but feel they are still missing the mark. Nature heals. Being at one with the natural world, breathing it in, allowing the physical boundaries of skin and bark that separate us, to dissolve. We are after all, just a mass of atoms flying around in space, exchanging energy and engaging on a level we will never understand. One thing this speaker mentioned, resonated with me. Light heals, whether light from within or light from outside. Yes, I have a fancy Infrared Sauna which I spent an hour in this morning, but today's greatest sense of wellness, was walking in the magical, golden light of dusk, listening to the call of birds and observing the wonder of majestic trees. There are many healing modalities and technologies, but nature is always a clear winner for me. Amidst the chaos of mid-semester uni assignments, relentless self-questioning and self-doubt, mother nature in all her wisdom, without agenda or ego, has put it all into perspective yet again. And all it took was a 30 min walk along a forest path. #westernherbalmedicine #folkherbalism #folklore #whm #naturalmedicine

Let's talk about traditional energetic states of the body...but what does this actually mean? In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, herbs are used to balance the energetics of an individual depending on their element/s. This is the same in Western herbal medicine and it is just one of the ways a naturopath can prescribe herbs to help determine what your body needs. In Western herbal medicine, the energetic states are separated into different constitutions - heat, tension, dry, cold, or damp (flowing or stagnant). 🔥 HEAT: excessive activity affecting the immune, nervous and circulatory function 😬TENSE: over-stimulation of the nerves or muscles due to tension 🌵DRY: reduced function affecting glands, nerves and tissues 🥶COLD: reduced circulation leading to under activity or exhausted tissue 💧DAMP (relaxation/flowing): reduced tones of tissues that produce an excess of fluids due to a lack of electrolytes in the body 💩DAMP (stagnation): body fluids and waste accumulation #naturopathy #naturopathystudent #niramayanaturopathy #health #healthandwellbeing #holistichealth #processofhealing #healing #energeticstatesofthebody #westernherbalmedicine #energeticsofhealth #holistichealing

Have you heard about the decline of global male fertility? 🤯 Is it true? It seems that it is for some population sub-sets (but not necessarily across the board). According to the WHO, the lowest 5th percentile of men who fathered a viable pregnancy within a year of trying to conceive had sperm that had: 🐋30% progressive motility (i.e. able to move in one direction) 🐋54% vitality 🐋4% normal form (morphology) We could consider these numbers to be the absolute bare minimum required to achieve a pregnancy within a year of trying. Did you know there are plenty of diet and lifestyle factors you can modify to improve the odds? Check out my "Bloke's Bit" webinar for more. And in case you didn't know, healthy swimmers can be considered a marker for overall health - not limited to fertility. Message me if you would like the link. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine philosophy, a stagnant liver generates heat in the body (called an internal heat pattern), which can compromise its ability to perform its detoxification functions. When this occurs, baical skullcap is traditionally taken in Chinese medicine to clear excess damp-heat from the liver and support the body’s natural detoxification processes in patterns of internal heat. Find baical skullcap alongside milk thistle, which supports liver health, in Fusion Liver Tonic. 🔗 Visit our website to order Fusion’s Liver Tonic. Always read the label and follow the directions for use. - #FushionHealth #HealthandWellness #FusionHealthVitamins #FH #FHSupplements#ChineseMedicine #TraditionalChineseMedicine #AyuverdicMedicine #WesternHerbalMedicine #yourhealthstore #healthfoodstore #healthproducts #naturalhealth #healthyliving

Your diet plays a major role in your heart health which can impact your risk of heart disease. Certain foods can influence blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol levels and inflammation, all of which are risk factors for heart disease ❤️‍🩹 🐟 Fatty Fish: Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, extensively researched for their positive effects on heart health. These play a protective role in reducing the risk of heart disease and lower the likelihood of CVD events and arrhythmias. 🫘 Beans & Lentils: Beans are packed with resistant starch, a type of starch that withstands digestion and is fermented by beneficial gut bacteria. Resistant starch has the potential to promote gut health and positively influence specific members of the gut microbiota. 🥑 Avocados: Avocados are a superb source of monounsaturated fats, known for promoting heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and diminishing the risk of heart disease. 🥜 Nuts & Seeds: Nuts and seeds are excellent sources of heart-healthy nutrients, such as fibre and omega-3 fatty acids. Research has shown that incorporating nuts and seeds into your diet can enhance various risk factors associated with heart disease, including inflammation, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides. 🥗 Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and collard greens are renowned for their abundance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Notably, they serve as an excellent reservoir of vitamin K, crucial for safeguarding arteries and facilitating healthy blood clotting. 🍓 Berries: Berries are jam-packed with nutrients that play a central role in heart health. They are rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanins, which shield against oxidative stress and inflammation, pivotal factors in the onset of heart disease. Shop all fresh produce at Dr Earth today 🍃 #DrEarth

Tonight’s dinner, a rush before a work webinar on ‘Longevity Medicine’ my other passion. Interesting that some of tonight’s ingredients are geroprotective. Blackberries and beetroot, olive oil and cruciferous greens. Salad inspired by @skyemcalpine from her Substack ‘The Dolce Vita Diaries’ where she talked about a beetroot and blackberry salad. I had some beetroot from the garden that I roasted last weekend and some spare blackberries. She’s 100% correct that the earthiness of the beetroot is complemented by the sweetness of my blackberries. Spanakopita was filled with silver beet, rocket and spinach, some fennel seeds, feta and eggs. Delicious. Ashwagandha, scientifically known as Withania somnifera, is a popular adaptogenic herb that has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, which is a holistic system of medicine that originated in India. Also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, ashwagandha is valued for its potential health benefits and is often used as a supplement. 🌿Adaptogenic Properties: Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen, which means it may help the body adapt to stress and promote overall well-being. 🌿Stress and Anxiety: Some studies suggest that ashwagandha may have anti-anxiety effects and may help reduce stress levels by regulating cortisol, a hormone released in response to stress. 🌿Cognitive Function: There is some evidence to suggest that ashwagandha may have neuroprotective properties and could potentially enhance cognitive function. 🌿Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Ashwagandha has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to its potential benefits for conditions related to inflammation. 🌿Immune System Support: Some research indicates that ashwagandha may have immunomodulatory effects, potentially supporting the immune system. 🌿Physical Performance: There is some evidence to suggest that ashwagandha may have positive effects on physical performance and strength, making it of interest to athletes and fitness enthusiasts. 🌿Sleep Support: Ashwagandha is sometimes used to promote better sleep and address insomnia. 🌿Hormonal Balance: It is believed that ashwagandha may help balance hormones, particularly in situations of chronic stress.

Making Herbal Ointments The Herbal Apprentice - Week 6 Ointment = Salve = Balm Oil Based Topical Applications These create a protective layer over the skin, unlike a cream, which is water and oil based and absorbs into the skin. Depending on the herbs chosen, ointments can be useful in cases of: 🌻 bites and stings 🌻 cuts and wounds 🌻 chest rubs 🌻 bruises and strains 🌻 dry skin conditions The constituents which are best extracted into oils are: 🌱 Aromatic Herbs (essential/volatile oils) 🌱 Pungent Herbs (alkamides) 🌱 Pungent and Resinous Herbs (resins) 🌱 Oily Herbs (lipids) Adding a type of wax to an Infused Oil creates an ointment, and the added perks of these are that they can be shelf stable for longer, they transport more easily, and they create more of a protective layer on the skin (last longer). Some Herbs that lend themselves best to ointments are: 🪻Thyme 🪻Hyssop 🪻 Calendula 🪻Plantain 🪻Eucalyptus 🪻Spruce 🪻Pine 🪻Juniper 🪻Yarrow 🪻Comfrey ...to name a few.
