Reading “Fatal Conveniences” by @darinolien cited an FDA / HHS study, some of the findings are important to note. The FDA states that only two active ingredients found in sunscreens are “generally recognized as safe and effective”: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide - both natural substances. These sunscreens are considered “Mineral-based”. On the contrary, “Chemical-based” sunscreens are exactly what they seem, full of chemicals: PABA, dioxybenzone, trolamine salicylate, avobenzene, octocrylene and oxybenzone, etc. The Matta et al., 2020 study found that after a single application of sunscreen, subjects’ blood concentrations of oxybenzone were more than 180x the FDA’s level of concern and continued to rise to more than 500x the FDA’s own safety threshold after four days of recommended use per the label. High levels of oxybenzone in the blood found in adolescent boys resulted in significantly lower testosterone levels. This chemical has been associated with shorter pregnancies, lower birth rates, increased risk for developing breast cancer and endometriosis. And because the chemical has “anti-inflammatory” properties, it may actually hide symptoms associated with a sunburn. This chemical isn’t just bad for your body, but it isn’t reef safe or environmentally friendly. As such, two of these dangerous chemicals have been banned within the state of #Hawaii and the city of Key West, FL. Mineral-based sunscreen may be more difficult to rub in, as it creates a physical, protective barrier for the skin. RFK Jr. has been an anti-science activist for decades. His work began under the guise of “environmentalism” but really allowed him to foment fears about agriculture, genetic technologies, vaccines, and [CHEMICALS]. Did you know that he was the person to popularize the phrase “factory farming”? And that he was one of the orchestrators of the lawsuits against Monsanto, making unfounded claims about links to cancer? Or that he spread unfounded fears about fluoride and vaccines? Clearly, he is persuasive, as nearly all the myths that circulate today related to health and science topics can be traced back to his work. While he might have gotten recent attention for his purported “brain worm” and mercury poisoning, he has been causing harm to public health for decades. On top of that, he makes MILLIONS every year doing so. As such, it is hard to take this seriously when these claims of cognitive impacts as a result of these health issues only appeared when he was trying to avoid alimony payments during his second divorce in 2012. RFK Jr. is single-handedly responsible for the deaths of countless children through his anti-vaccine rhetoric. Through his organization, Children’s Health Defense, he foments fear and health anxiety about an array of public health topics. He undermines scientific and technological progress. He propagates harmful conspiracy theories. He hinders the development of substainable agriculture. He is a danger to public health. Oh, and he’s friends with others who do the same: Andrew Huberman, Joe Rogan, Aaron Rodgers, Elon Musk. Did he have a parasitic cyst? Who knows. For decades, the tobacco industry has manipulated the design and composition of cigarettes, including by “reconstituting” tobacco, increasing nicotine content, incorporating chemical additives, and reengineering filters, to consistently deliver nicotine at levels that encourage and sustain addiction among consumers, write the authors of a new Perspective. To reduce the harm caused by cigarette smoking, the Food and Drug Administration (@fda) is considering implementing a nicotine product standard for cigarettes, under which cigarettes could contain only very low, potentially nonaddictive levels of nicotine. Research suggests that such a standard could substantially reduce rates of disease and premature deaths in the United States by both reducing the likelihood of cigarette-smoking initiation among people who don’t smoke and reducing nicotine dependence and facilitating #SmokingCessation among people who do smoke. The authors believe researchers and policymakers must be prepared for and anticipate the tobacco industry’s potential response to this critical regulation, given the industry’s long history of exploiting regulatory loopholes to maintain profits.
