The death toll from the measles outbreak in Adamawa State has now risen to 49. With that development, Governor Umaru Fintiri has directed his Commissioners to return to their constituency and engage the locals on the danger of spreading the disease. One of the measures taken by Governor Fintiri is closing down of all public and private primary schools in the state to enable children to get the needed medical attention. The Governor also directed all Commissioners in the state to educate their constituents on the need for children to be immune against the disease. At a media interaction organised by the World Health Organisation, media practitioners in the state were briefed on how they can contribute in the fight against measles. According to WHO, 84% of children worldwide have received at least one dose of the measles vaccine. In Pakistan, children get two doses of the vaccine: at 9 months and 2 years old. The Pakistani immunization program struggles to control measles outbreaks due to various reasons: corruption, parents refusing vaccination, unvaccinated refugees, conflict in Northern areas, security issues, lack of awareness among healthcare professionals about vaccination schedules, insufficient training in vaccine administration, and vaccine effectiveness issues. Measles is back in the US with far over 125 cases this year including 7 outbreaks. Measles is back because of ongoing, global measles activity & declining immunization protection with MMR vaccine. Just last year our school children dropped coverage from 95% to only 93% of all kindergartners being protected. Seemingly small shifts change the rate of safety dramatically. We’re not just seeing cases, we’re seeing transmission & outbreaks. That’s the problem. 🤢 Measles is highly infectious, causing high fever, runny nose, eye gunk, and then a whole body rash that falls from head to toe. Measles is so contagious that if you don’t have the MMR vaccine and you’re in a room with someone with measles even if they were there two hours prior, you’ll get the infection nine out of 10 times. Unfortunately measles is more dangerous for children under age 5 and causes 1 in 5 children and adults to be hospitalized. Rarely it causes serious brain swelling, and even death: 1 to 3 in 1000 people die from measles. ⚪️The good news is that the MMR vaccine is widely available, safe, & part of our routine shots given at 1 year. We’ve been giving MMR shots since the 1970s and it was so effective, we declared measles to be gone from the US in the year 2000. Unfortunately individual cases from people traveling outside the US have brought it back. ⚪️Good news: during an outbreak you are safe if you’ve had your MMR shots, you can go to school and play and work as you always would. After 2 doses of the shot 97% of us will never get measles and are safe in an outbreak if you’re not immunized talk with your doctor if measles is in your community area being in a community that is immunized is the safe place to be. So…..make sure you and your family are all immunized and check in with your school to make sure that at least 90% of students are protected. If you’ve got an infant at home know that most infants are protected from maternal antibodies passed along from mom during pregnancy until about 7 to 8 months of age. If you’re lucky enough to be traveling with your infant outside the US after 6 months of age, your baby can get an MMR shot prior to travel ✈️. #measlesoutbreak #mmr #50for50

We have been contacted by Public Health for Solihull to spread more awareness around Measles ❤️ “We continue to see measles cases locally including cases in babies and very young children; most recently in parent and baby groups.” Measles is very infectious and can cause severe illness, especially in certain at-risk groups including babies and small children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immunity. Complications could mean hospitalisation, permanent disability, and in rare cases, it can even cause death. There is no cure for measles. The best protection is through two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination. Babies under one are too young to routinely receive the vaccine, so the best way to protect them is to make sure that those around them are vaccinated. For this reason, we are encouraging everyone to ensure they are protected against measles by getting the MMR. This can be done by contacting your GP. We have attached an NHS action card that provides some key points about measles FYI. As a primary school teacher, we have all been advised to contact our GPs to check that we have had the vaccination as children. Cases of measles are rising across the United States. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 121 measles cases were recorded as of the second week of April, over twice the total number of cases in 2023 which reported 58. This uptick in measles infections has not hit Texas yet. However, according to Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, cases are popping up from New Jersey to Louisiana. Hotez said Texas is one of the more vulnerable states, given declining vaccination rates, an uptick in requests for vaccination exemptions for children and frequent travel from areas outside the United States where vaccination rates are low and measles is active in those countries. recently, someone (who followed this account!) commented that these posts are just a form of “Covid cautious” (I reject that term) people “feeling sorry for [ourselves]” because apparently social media carousels featuring anecdotes & personal experiences are not worth as much as “the science” to them. they also said something to the effect of “pity parties [posts commiserating over the state of the world wrt Covid] won’t change people’s minds.” this lone interaction didn’t bother me in and of itself, but it got me thinking about how most people can’t or won’t read scientific studies/literature bc they’re largely inaccessible to the majority—so, aren’t anecdotes and personal experiences much more likely to “change people’s minds” de facto? it’s not that deep…just thinking and thinking about the “value” of running an account like this. most people seem to take comfort and strength from anecdotes and personal experiences (as y’all have commented/messaged many times before), and I think the act of platforming real people with their own thoughts and ideas is way more likely to get others (who don’t know and/or don’t care about Covid) on board. I’m not a scientist or doctor. Covid never went away. “It’s still going around?” “It’s back?!” YES. BELIEVE IT. Now picture their blank expression when I say “it never went away….” Usually I’m met with a nervous (?) laugh and then nada. Why are we afraid to talk about Covid? Why are we afraid to even say the word? As @therealsalamasina said: that means we’d have to contend with it—we as in the deniers, the minimizers, and as a society. But the longer we wait to talk about it, and maybe even work through some of the grief, the less control we have over the situation—the pandemic at large, our health, the health of our families—sonot even saying “Covid” makes even less sense, now, in 2024, because we’ve had plenty of time to sit apart from the grief & not even feel it a tiny bit. Grieving takes a long time, maybe even forever, and it’s wrong to assume that everyone grieves the same or takes the same amount of time to work through it. Personally, I am still grieving losses that happened 10+ years ago—the intensity of the feelings has subsided over time, but when I take time to really feel those feelings, it’s all dredged up again. And it sucks sometimes but there’s nothing ~wrong~ with doing so. I think that the overwhelming elements of grief will not dissipate until they’re acknowledged and—to some extent—worked through. A few months before my middle child was born many years ago, the new rotavirus vaccine was added to the NHS routine vaccination schedule. I was on maternity leave at the time and out of the loop so I hadn’t realised, only finding out when I rocked up with him for his first set of vaccines. I remember suddenly being gripped with fear when the nurse asked me if it was ok to give it to him, perhaps given my profession, completely irrational. But irrational or not, in that moment, I was filled with uncertainty. I remember my head filling with all the potential ‘what if’s’ I hadn’t had a chance to read up on and feeling quite paralysed by having to make this decision on this helpless humans’ behalf (probably made worse by being extremely sleep deprived). So, with all the noise and misinformation about vaccines in the last 2 decades, planting seeds of doubt into parents’ minds and the general sentiment of distrust that seems to have descended on us in the last few years, I get it. I get the fear, I’ve experienced it (albeit momentarily- he did have the vaccine). I understand that vaccine hesitancy comes from a place of love and fear and just wanting to do the very best for your child. But, we have decades and decades of evidence to say that it IS safe. It is NOT responsible for all the negative outcomes that have been laid at its door. Measles can kill. Introduction of this vaccine has saved millions and millions of lives. That is not an opinion to be quibbled with, it is a fact. To see us going backwards 💔 Cases are on the rise, globally. Not just in the UK and USA, but some of the highest numbers are in India and Indonesia; all very relevant for us here in Singapore. If you have concerns about vaccines, please talk to your GP or paediatrician about them. You won’t be judged, it’s not an ‘us’ versus ‘them’ situation, you won’t be forced; but the discussion may allay your worries enough to reconsider. If you are travelling this summer, do make sure your child has had their necessary 2 doses and if your baby is between 6-11 months old and you are travelling to an outbreak area, speak to your Dr about whether an extra early dose is advisable.
