Being an #academicmum means that you are on the rail tracks a lot - even more so as a #commuting academic #mum. The train becomes you third #office in addition to the one at university and your #homeoffice. Usually when I am on the train, I retreat into my #mindpalace (Ha! I wish … More like a crammed boxroom.), which is quite solitary. The greater the joy when you meet a colleague and fellow academic mum who a) not only is very nice and b) does fascinating research (This meeting counts as a #oneminute lecture in regenerative #neurogenesis and axonal pathfinding in #spinalcord regeneration. I loved it! Also, I could look at fish.), but c) is also kindred soul when it comes to wearing a mask in crowded spaces. So, when a #neuroscientist, who knows quite well what SARS-CoV-2 can do to your brain, and a #nursingscientist, who teaches #infectionprotection, both continue to #wearamask on the train - take it as a recommendation. This was a fun ride.

Our next birding adventure will be on Sunday, May 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm! • We will visit Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora. Most people have a state park pass as part of their vehicle registration unless you opted out. A day pass is $11 if you opted out of including admission in your registration. • We can also potentially arrange for a ride into the park if you can't afford admission. Also, if you cannot drive, fill out our carpooling form at the link in our bio and we can try to match you with a ride. • Park at the Cherry Creek Crossing parking lot. There are no restrooms at that lot, but there are restrooms at the Cottonwood Creek lot nearby. The path is paved. • Amateurs are welcome! We'll walk slowly so we can spot as many birds as possible. We'll see many songbirds, and possibly hear or see owls, hawks, and shorebirds. • Pouring rain or dangerous thunderstorms will cancel; light rain will not. • Best practices for in-person events: If you’re feeling ill, don’t come. Almost half of kids with new C-19 brain problems had blood vessel issues in a 2023 study. • A 2023 study titled “High incidence of cerebrovascular lesions on magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric COVID-19 during omicron outbreak – A retrospective case series” by Yen-Ju Chu, Lee-Chin Wong, Wen-Chin Weng, Pi-Chuan Fan, Hsin-Pei Wang, Yung-Ting Kuo, Ting-Yu Yen, Chun-Yi Lu, Ping-Ing Lee, Luan-Yin Chan, Ching-Chia Wang, En-Ting Wu, Frank Leigh Lu, Steven Shinn-Forng Peng, and Wang-Tso Lee looked at the MRI scans of 31 kids in Taiwan because they had neurological problems after getting C-19. • The omicron variant was circulating at the time of the study. Nearly half (48%) of the children had abnormal MRI results, predominantly encephalitis/encephalopathy. Seizures were a common problem. Blood vessel problems in the brain were seen in most (80%) of the kids with abnormal MRIs, mainly affecting the middle cerebral arteries. These lesions and blood vessel issues may be why some kids have new brain problems after getting C-19. • The limitation of the study is that MRI was performed only in patients with relatively severe neurological manifestations. Our Colorado Springs event has been rescheduled, and we have exciting news: we will have a PortaCount available! This is a high-quality quantitative fit-testing machine for masks. • Saturday, May 25 from 2 to 4 pm at Fountain Park, 901 E. Fountain Blvd. in Colorado Springs. • KN95 or better mask required; we can provide a KN95 or N95. Rain will cancel. This is an all ages event. • Special information to know for the PortaCount testing: 1. Testing Honeywell, Moldex, GVS, Trend, Flo Mask and 3M bayonet-style reusable respirators with adapters will not damage the mask. 2. Any disposable mask can be tested, but the test probe puts a hole in the mask, so you won’t be able to resue it. Make sure to bring a backup mask to wear or have a SIP valve installed prior to testing. 3. Bring a mask that appears to fit you well. 4. These tests take a minimum of 6 minutes per person, and more likely 12. Plan to be waiting to be tested. 5. Testing masks modified to fix gaps such as with chin staples is fine. 6. Myalgia encephalomyelitis/ME/CFS is a life of suspension and stasis, locked inside bodies of relentless, weighted suffering. ME/CFS is a multi-system and multifaceted illness affecting every moment of our lives. My days are spent oscillating between acceptance of this life’s lot and squeezing will and way to manifest an escape from this human hell. My heart doesn’t stop grieving for things lost to years of inability, as if the hourglass drowned me in its sand. Who will save us? Today is World ME Awareness Day. Today marks another year of patients and their caregivers and friends working to help people understand this illness, working to educate the medical world, move the needle, and possibly free us from our caged existence. In April, in the US, ME/CFS and Long Covid patients told our stories to our representatives in Congress. Our ask: For the formation of an entity at NIH for Infection Related Chronic Conditions. I told my story. And ever since, I’ve been in a rough mental place. I expected an uplift in my spirit, a new hope to hold on to. But instead, I’m exhausted. I’m tired of the beg for treatments and funding and of irresponsible doctors—liability so at this point—to educate themselves. I’m exhausted from being in the nightmare where you scream in terror as the world walks by, only no sound comes out. I have no real cheer today; there is no need to post a fluff of niceties. Today, my heart is simply with all the other ME/CFS patients and our collective suffering. My wish for ME Awareness Day is that this time next year, I’m posting astonishing movement toward care and treatment for ME/CFS. (In the comments, I’ve posted my story from Congressional Awareness Week and why I want the formation of an NIH entity for Infectious Related Chronic Conditions)

ME Awareness Day 2024 (featuring my blue #汉服 and N95 because it’s #APAHM and Covid is not over) One year ago, I posted about my experience with “moderate” ME/CFS that was quickly worsening to a severe level. Today, I no longer meet the diagnostic criteria for this highly stigmatized, painful, and contested illness. I still have energy limits (more forgiving, but they need protection nonetheless). Being #bedbound for months on end is an experience I will not easily forget. Statistically, only 5% of pwME recover. There is still no FDA-approved cure, treatment, or even biomarker test. Any level of ME, even “mild,” is a severe reduction of functioning. The hallmark symptom is PEM/PENE, post exertional neuroimmune exhaustion. I hope that this #MEAwarenessDay, you take some time to learn about the #MillionsMissing and how to be an #AllyForME. Make sure to include #SevereME perspectives in your advocacy, since they are the most likely to be left out of conversations that favor those of us with more spoons.
