It's difficult to watch politicians and organizations acknowledge the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, but ignore the effects of the pandemic on the 2SLGBTQ+ community. The pandemic contributes to worsening socioeconomic conditions, and has been used by the far-right to push anti-LGBTQ2S+ hate. Extremely excited to be able to keep distributing earloop masks, they are by far the most popular. It seems totally nonsensical that proven strategies to reduce the transmission of illnesses (including Covid), like wearing well-fitted masks, have mostly been ignored by those in healthcare. Now provinces are scrambling to find more healthcare workers, but doing very little to create safer worplaces. It's unsustainable. We need good PPE for workers, a consistent commitment to masking in healthcare settings, and better education about Covid transmission and Long Covid for healthcare workers. This condition has taken away our ability to work, go to school, or even leave the house beyond what is necessary; it has taken away our quality of life. One of the main causes of the condition is the COVID spike protein binding to a substance in our blood and creating amyloid micro-clots that clog our bloodstreams (among other mechanisms such as viral persistence). This micro-clotting affects every organ and system of the body. Canada is very far behind other countries on the research, treatment, and testing of Long-COVID and there is nowhere in the country that offers the testing we need. There is a MedHelp centre in Alabama, US that offers both micro-clot testing and treatment, however these cost more than we can afford. We are only asking for donations to cover the cost of the testing ($750 USD each before tax) at this time, as the test results will likely allow us to seek cheaper treatment options here in Canada, such as anti-coagulant medications. Our next birding adventure will be on Sunday, May 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm! • We will visit Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora. Most people have a state park pass as part of their vehicle registration unless you opted out. A day pass is $11 if you opted out of including admission in your registration. • We can also potentially arrange for a ride into the park if you can't afford admission. Also, if you cannot drive, fill out our carpooling form at the link in our bio and we can try to match you with a ride. • Park at the Cherry Creek Crossing parking lot. There are no restrooms at that lot, but there are restrooms at the Cottonwood Creek lot nearby. The path is paved. • Amateurs are welcome! We'll walk slowly so we can spot as many birds as possible. We'll see many songbirds, and possibly hear or see owls, hawks, and shorebirds. • Pouring rain or dangerous thunderstorms will cancel; light rain will not. • Best practices for in-person events: If you’re feeling ill, don’t come. Almost half of kids with new C-19 brain problems had blood vessel issues in a 2023 study. • A 2023 study titled “High incidence of cerebrovascular lesions on magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric COVID-19 during omicron outbreak – A retrospective case series” by Yen-Ju Chu, Lee-Chin Wong, Wen-Chin Weng, Pi-Chuan Fan, Hsin-Pei Wang, Yung-Ting Kuo, Ting-Yu Yen, Chun-Yi Lu, Ping-Ing Lee, Luan-Yin Chan, Ching-Chia Wang, En-Ting Wu, Frank Leigh Lu, Steven Shinn-Forng Peng, and Wang-Tso Lee looked at the MRI scans of 31 kids in Taiwan because they had neurological problems after getting C-19. • The omicron variant was circulating at the time of the study. Nearly half (48%) of the children had abnormal MRI results, predominantly encephalitis/encephalopathy. Seizures were a common problem. Blood vessel problems in the brain were seen in most (80%) of the kids with abnormal MRIs, mainly affecting the middle cerebral arteries. These lesions and blood vessel issues may be why some kids have new brain problems after getting C-19. • The limitation of the study is that MRI was performed only in patients with relatively severe neurological manifestations. Our Colorado Springs event has been rescheduled, and we have exciting news: we will have a PortaCount available! This is a high-quality quantitative fit-testing machine for masks. • Saturday, May 25 from 2 to 4 pm at Fountain Park, 901 E. Fountain Blvd. in Colorado Springs. • KN95 or better mask required; we can provide a KN95 or N95. Rain will cancel. This is an all ages event. • Special information to know for the PortaCount testing: 1. Testing Honeywell, Moldex, GVS, Trend, Flo Mask and 3M bayonet-style reusable respirators with adapters will not damage the mask. 2. Any disposable mask can be tested, but the test probe puts a hole in the mask, so you won’t be able to resue it. Make sure to bring a backup mask to wear or have a SIP valve installed prior to testing. 3. Bring a mask that appears to fit you well. 4. These tests take a minimum of 6 minutes per person, and more likely 12. Plan to be waiting to be tested. 5. Testing masks modified to fix gaps such as with chin staples is fine. 6. Those with facial hair need to shave in the area where their mask seals. What is a PortaCount? From the manufacturer’s website: “The TSI PortaCount is the most widely used and trusted Quantitative Fit Test method. The PortaCount provides a direct assessment of respirator fit by comparing the concentration of ambient dust particles outside the facepiece to the concentration of particles that have leaked into the facepiece.” https://www.face-fit.co.uk/how-the-portacount-works/ • Best practices for our in-person events: If you’re feeling ill, don’t come. Take 3 rapid tests, each 48 hours apart, before the day, and mask indoors for the 5 days prior to the event (we hope you already mask everywhere). Disclaimer: rapid testing does not guarantee that there is no risk, but testing and two-way masking mitigates a lot of risk. • Other details: Bring a blanket or chair to sit on. Encampments are already becoming more populated as the weather improves, and most plans for better housing options have been delayed again. With the advent of the new FLiRT variants, the possibility of another Covid wave will be disastrous for unhoused neighbours. Housing insecurity can't be eliminated without acknowledging the pandemic. Every infection starts somewhere. We can break the chain of transmission by staying home when sick, testing, and wearing a well-fitted N95 (or equivalent) respirator mask.
