my cister (cis sister) and i saw The People's Joker a bit ago.! i anticipated seeing it for almost 2 years and it was, truthfully, a very calming experience after being quite nervous about . leaving the house for the first time in 7 months., see what amazing things this movie inspires‽ change da world . . i've been wanting to draw a thing about seeing it but didnt wanna draw a scene from memory and mess it up, so i guess i kinda made fan art of the local theatre instead. it wasn't empty, i just didn't feel like drawing approximations of other humans even if they were the least disruptive audience i've sat with in so long. (i drew this last night when my eyes were so so dry.) another person wore joker makeup and also 2 children saw me outside, laughed, then hid around a corner to look at me again. so glad to bring joy into this world...! i made that shirt frantically in the days before seeing the movie. it was based on a shirt idea from a tumblr post. it has bats on it. the letters have drips on it that i dubbed Blood serif. if you are able, go see this thing! it is so good in the brain and anyone who has seen a movie before or likes to laugh or witness amazing things should have a good time. i dare you to wear a respirator there to protect yerself and other jokers. #maskup #thepeoplesjoker [part of the movie made me think of this sequence in A.I. Legislators mainly in N.C. and NYC (and edited to add Ohio as well) are seeking to ban masks. How are masks and seatbelts similar? Seatbelts are not perfect in preventing injuries from a car crash, but they clearly help. Masks are not perfect for preventing airborne diseases, but they clearly help. Seatbelts are mostly for the wearers protection, while masks are for reducing your ability to contract & transmit airborne diseases. Masks protect both the wearer and those around them. Why ban them? Legislators claim it is for protection from criminals. Crutches, canes, wheel chairs and more have been used to commit crimes yet these are not banned from public use. Wildly enough, firearms are not banned from the general public to commit crimes. How does this impact professions that require masks? Are surgeons to not wear masks in surgery? Are those who remove lead paint or asbestos to not wear masks to prevent inhalation of a deadly toxin? Any legislation that seeks to criminalize masking is more than likely in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act as immunocompromised and some disabled folks need respirators to protect their disabled immune systems. Any mask ban is about using surveillance without your consent to monitor you. Meanwhile immunocompromised people do not consent to risking their health to simply exist in public spaces. If you wouldn't want legislators to ban seat belts, please resist this ableist anti-mask legislation that further erodes consent. In the early days of pandemic, I experimented with different ways to mask up. This is a house painters mask, and it proved ineffective because it just got too hot and only has one layer of material. But what sucks for pandemic prevention works beautifully for an old sweaty bald man dusting his apartment. The mask might not have preventing SARS-CoV-2 from reaching me, but I won’t get dust stuck to my noggin when I clean. But I think we should all take a moment to appreciate the reservoir tip, something no other N95 (or better) respirator offers #maskup
