From one reported transmission to a human and a multi-state outbreak among dairy cows, the agriculture industry is on high alert for possible cases of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza — aka bird flu. There have been no reported cases of HPAI in Georgia among people or dairy cows since traces of the virus were found in pasteurized milk last month. The full virus has not been detected in Georgia poultry since last year. But state agencies here are still prepared, and proceeding with caution. “Our team at the department has been in constant communication with dairy producers in Georgia,” said Matthew Agvent, spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. En este sentido, la responsable técnica del programa mundial contra la gripe, la doctora Aspen Hammond, ha explicado que, a principios de 2024, "hubo una enfermedad inexplicable en el ganado lechero que causó una caída en su producción de leche en EEUU". Un hecho que, en realidad, "fue la detección de gripe aviar H5N1 en la leche de las vacas". "También ha habido detecciones de H5N1 en otros animales cercanos a los rebaños de ganado lechero afectados, hemos oído informes de infecciones detectadas en gatos y mapaches, aves silvestres y domésticas cercanas. FSIS collected 30 samples of ground beef from retail outlets in the states with dairy cattle herds that had tested positive for the H5N1 influenza virus at the time of sample collection. The samples were sent to APHIS’ National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) for PCR testing. On May 1, NVSL reported that all samples tested negative for H5N1. These results reaffirm that the meat supply is safe." The avian flu has infected at least 19 other animal species including cats. 👇 🔵 With the risk to non-avian species increasing, the scientific community now references this flu by its subtype, H5N1, until an official name is given by the World Organization for Animal Health. 🔵 Documented cases in cats remain rare. 🔵 It is unknown whether cats can spread the disease to other cats or different species, including humans. 🔵 Infected cats have presented with respiratory and neurological signs, including circling and blindness. Other signs include eye discharge, dullness and depression. What you can do as a pet owner: 🔵 Keep your cat inside if possible. 🔵 Discourage the mixing of cats and birds. For example, remove bird feeders from your yard. 🔵 If you live near a cattle or dairy farm, keep your cats away from the area. 🔵 Be aware of your contact with birds, and minimize exposure. For example, if your shoes were exposed to bird excrement, keep them away from animals. 🔵 Reconsider your pet's raw food diet until we learn more about the virus in food. There are some specific concerns about the H5N1 virus in these particular diets. 🔵 If you have a backyard flock, extra precautions should be taken. This includes keeping wild birds and animals away from your flock and ensuring you do not expose your animals to anything after having contact with your birds. Highly probable H5N1 virus will harm humans (pandemic?) more and more as the virus seems now more easily transmitted from wild birds and factory birds to livestock (meat and dairy) and wild animals. Human contraction thus far limited to farm workers but what # of human contractions is the tipping point? Further to this, economic studies show that animal agriculture is responsible for approx 50% of climate change impacts. At what point do people broadly take their health and the climate seriously enough to make changes? Even farmed fish are not immune as they are fed ground chicken byproducts. Yuck. The resources and options to phase out animals as food are amazing. It started with the cats, or the lack thereof. Dr. Tim Dickerson, a large animal veterinarian in New Mexico, usually gets swarmed by barn cats when visiting one of his client’s dairy farms. But this time, they were nowhere to be found. He mentioned this offhand when talking to a colleague, Dr. Barbara Petersen, another large animal veterinarian based in the Texas Panhandle. Around the same time, she was talking with a local veterinarian at the end of February, who asked if she had seen cows with diarrhea or pneumonia. She hadn’t. That is, not until a week later, when Dr. Petersen saw similar signs in one of the herds she co-owns with another veterinarian. Some of the cows had mastitis and their milk had the consistency of “colostrum and Elmer’s glue.” What happened from there turned into the discovery of the first national outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle. As of April 29, avian influenza virus type A (H5N1) has been confirmed in dairy cattle in nine states: 12 herds in Texas, six each in New Mexico and Michigan, four in Kansas, two in Idaho, and one each in Ohio, North Carolina, South Dakota, and Colorado. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has since instituted a federal order requiring testing of lactating dairy cattle for HPAI prior to interstate movement and reporting of positive results for livestock. While the movement restriction initially applies to lactating dairy cows, this may be adjusted based on an evolving scientific understanding of the disease and risks. In addition, four more sick cats have tested positive for H5N1, according to state and federal officials, raising the number of cat cases connected to the current dairy cow outbreak to seven.
