remember, anything that happens to “other people” can, and may very well, happen to you. one of the gravest errors someone can make is thinking that “individual risk assessment” is a valid, humane, and logical way to DIY an ongoing pandemic. your actions matter and you don’t exist inside your own one-way bubble where unmasking only affects you. remember in 2020 when there was all kinds of bizarre messaging around how “masks protect others more than they protect the wearer” (not true, btw—you protect yourself from inhaling others’ exhaled germs, and you protect others from catching your exhaled germs when you wear a non-cloth well-fitting mask or respirator!) and it felt so disappointing to realize how very few people seemed to give a fck about protecting YOU bc they weren’t masking consistently, or at all? well, that’s still how it feels nowadays, when wealthy (and 99% of the time white, and 50% or more of the time cis men) people collect endless gadgets to make their lives Covid-safer, without giving a second thought to how they might be excluding LITERALLY everyone else from their half-assed “risk assessments”. Chuffed by Sir Chuffington / SO FLUFFY / highlight of the weekend / tuppence a bag / consider this. There are two mourning dove couples nesting in my yard and next door. One of my favorite sounds on earth. They come back every year. Our block retaining wall is a little apartment complex for them…I imagine each nook and cranny offering a different amenity. It makes me happy to offer them shelter. My grandma Barbara owned parrots. I handled them, fed them as a young child, had love, but then became fearful of birds in general because of their unpredictability, and I have a strong startle response, and I got grossed out by them. Only recently, being home like I have for years, could I really start noticing their patterns and appreciating these creatures that live right next to me. Jeff got a birdfeeder for out his bedroom window, and started learning their names and calls last year. It became a whole thing. recently, someone (who followed this account!) commented that these posts are just a form of “Covid cautious” (I reject that term) people “feeling sorry for [ourselves]” because apparently social media carousels featuring anecdotes & personal experiences are not worth as much as “the science” to them. they also said something to the effect of “pity parties [posts commiserating over the state of the world wrt Covid] won’t change people’s minds.” this lone interaction didn’t bother me in and of itself, but it got me thinking about how most people can’t or won’t read scientific studies/literature bc they’re largely inaccessible to the majority—so, aren’t anecdotes and personal experiences much more likely to “change people’s minds” de facto? it’s not that deep…just thinking and thinking about the “value” of running an account like this. most people seem to take comfort and strength from anecdotes and personal experiences (as y’all have commented/messaged many times before), and I think the act of platforming real people with their own thoughts and ideas is way more likely to get others (who don’t know and/or don’t care about Covid) on board. Covid never went away. “It’s still going around?” “It’s back?!” YES. BELIEVE IT. Now picture their blank expression when I say “it never went away….” Usually I’m met with a nervous (?) laugh and then nada. Why are we afraid to talk about Covid? Why are we afraid to even say the word? As @therealsalamasina said: that means we’d have to contend with it—we as in the deniers, the minimizers, and as a society. But the longer we wait to talk about it, and maybe even work through some of the grief, the less control we have over the situation—the pandemic at large, our health, the health of our families—sonot even saying “Covid” makes even less sense, now, in 2024, because we’ve had plenty of time to sit apart from the grief & not even feel it a tiny bit. Grieving takes a long time, maybe even forever, and it’s wrong to assume that everyone grieves the same or takes the same amount of time to work through it. Personally, I am still grieving losses that happened 10+ years ago—the intensity of the feelings has subsided over time, but when I take time to really feel those feelings, it’s all dredged up again. And it sucks sometimes but there’s nothing ~wrong~ with doing so. I think that the overwhelming elements of grief will not dissipate until they’re acknowledged and—to some extent—worked through. It’s been a minute! While cases & wastewater activity have thankfully dipped, our “lowest” levels become higher and higher after each wave. For this update we’re looking at reported Texas cases, CDC wastewater data, PMC current and 4-week projection and J. Weiland’s 6-week projection. A reminder that as cases are no longer reportable by law in Texas, San Antonio/Bexar County no longer track or report cases. While transmission is relatively “low” now, both PMC & JWeiland projection models have us looking at an uptick in cases sooner than anticipated. On that note, we are still fulfilling mask requests (we’ve distributed a little over 1,700 masks since we restarted in February!) CO2 readings from a visit to the newly opened @gigisgeneralstorechi in Ravenswood - a cute little shop specializing in “dry goods, plastic-free pre-packaged delights, urban gardening supplies, housewares, vintage and upcycled items”. Was very pleased they had the door open and the staff person promptly put on a mask as soon as she saw two of walk in with ours on. (Two of us were wearing high quality masks, the staff person had a surgical, and none of the other 2-4 people who came in/out wore masks.) The readings speak for themselves, and I wish more places were conscious of opening doors for airflow on days when the weather allows it.
