Dr. Patelisio Na’a Patelisio from the University of Auckland recently graduated with a master’s degree for his research on PTSD in Pacific children, inspired by his own experiences following the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption. During the disaster, Patelisio was working at Vaiola Hospital in Nuku’alofa and witnessed firsthand the traumatic impact on the community. His research highlighted the significant variation in PTSD occurrence among children in the Asia-Pacific, influenced by disaster severity and diagnostic methods. Patelisio’s study emphasizes the need for localized PTSD research in Pacific island countries and suggests enhancing clinician awareness of PTSD symptoms in children to facilitate early intervention. His findings have led to his appointment as the Pacific representative on the Asia-Pacific Disaster Mental Health Network. A recent article written for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by Steve Bohnel and Ciara McEneay discusses how the new EPA rule regulating PM 2.5 will affect the greater Pittsburgh area. The new standard, which went into effect this week, will severely fine companies for violations, but the county has until 2032 to meet these standards. While some communities within the county will be able to meet these new regulations with little change, other areas, especially Liberty, would need to cut PM 2.5 concentrations dramatically to do so.
