Since September of last year, there have been significant changes to the format of City Council meetings under the Brandon Johnson administration. These changes range from turning meetings into ticketed events to confining constituents behind plexiglass on the third floor, and even restricting access to the chambers to invite-only attendees, to now us standing in the hallway before committee meetings, between 15-30 minutes after the meetings are suppose to start, in a makeshift box made with Stanchions, like we are animals.. all because they don't want four people to speak at the meetings about the issues happening in the Black community such as the Local government elected officials with the help of the corrupt clergy, and private developers steal Black people properties, speaking about how this democratic town is doing nothing to help with our issues, because the Democratic Party been doing this, especially in CHICAGO.. they hate when we get to that mic and we call out the elected officials, while they're trying to blame it on Chicago Police and the SGT of Arms changing the rules.. no it's the ALDERMEN/WOMEN.. This behavior is unethical, unfair, and unconstitutional. Attending public meetings should not be this difficult, and it will not be. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to address this issue. If it is not resolved by the next meeting next week, we will take further action. We are not animals; we pay their salaries, vote these people in, and can ensure they are not re-elected if necessary. Thursday’s Pioneer Period included the final two Senior Speeches by the Class of 2024. Both students spoke about their time at IDEAL and expressed how the school changed them. The first student noted how she had felt misunderstood for most of her life, but when she came to IDEAL a year and a half ago, she quickly made friends, gained independence, and learned how to self-advocate. She said she will be taking a gap year while studying ASL next year, then pursue a career as a trauma nurse. On May 6, MIT President Sally Kornbluth set a 2:30 PM deadline for pro-Palestine campus protesters to vacate their encampment threatening suspension for those who refused. Once the deadline passed, only a few remained in the entrance. Despite the university threats, a rally outside the encampment grew, with some breaking down fences to re-enter. Unchallenged by police, protesters locked arms and formed a circle around the encampment. Additionally, high school students staged a walkout, blocking Massachusetts Avenue and MIT’s administration building steps for hours. We are witnessing and engaging so much bravery as people of all ages stand up for what they believe in. I also want to acknowledge that some folks really want to speak out but feel too scared to do so. Many face devastating consequences for daring to speak up against the current genocides and other horrible injustices recently brought to light. First, that fear is likely coming from a real place and support may be warranted. Also, if you are on the brink of speaking out and need a few tips to take that step, consider these: 7 Tips for using your voice when it feels really scary to do so. 1. Ground yourself: breathing exercises, time in nature, meeting your body’s needs 2.Write out your thoughts 3. Remind yourself that you don’t have to be perfect and you don't have to do it alone. 4. Remind yourself that you don’t have to “know everything” about a subject to know the difference between right and wrong [Period]. 5.Prepare after care: Debrief with someone in your support system Something to eat and drink Movement- stretching and/or something that gets your heart rate up. Something cozy 5.Prepare for the “consequences” Yes, someone may get mad at you- remind yourself that you can handle it. Write out your reminders and affirmations to stay grounded if someone expresses that they are upset by your expression Factor in any emotional or physical safety concerns and let this play a role in whether or not you decide to speak up or how you do so. 6.Remember that healthy relationships have the capacity for rupture and repair. 7.Remember that there will be opportunities to try again.
