On this day, 30 years ago, Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first Black and democratically elected president. Two weeks earlier, more than 22-million South Africans had gone to the polls in the country’s first truly democratic elections. Mandela’s party, the African National Congress (ANC), which for decades had been the country’s leading liberation movement, convincingly won - thereby ending more than three centuries of racist rule by White settler colonialists. Just a few years earlier, the ANC had still been outlawed, having been declared a terrorist organisation - with most of its senior leaders, including Mandela, jailed by the apartheid regime. In 1990, internal and external pressure saw the regime lift its ban on the ANC and free its top brass. This ushered a new era in the country’s history. Between 1990 and 1994, the ANC and the apartheid regime entered into intense negotiations regarding the future of the country, which resulted in elections on 27th April, 1994. Some South Africans fault some of the agreements struck during these negotiations as the cause of the country’s current social and economic woes. White people continue to hold the lion’s share of the nation’s wealth, despite making up less than 10% of the population. The failure to completely break down the apartheid-era economic system has been the biggest blemish on the legacy of the ANC and Mandela. 🇩🇪 Germany is celebrating 75 years of its constitution ("Grundgesetz"). While that indeed is something to celebrate, as the document itself includes many good things that are not standard around the world, it's also a moment to reflect. 🫂 The word democracy originates from ancient greece, meaning something like "rule of the people". Whether this is actually the case these days in Germany (and in other western democracies) is up for discussion, as global corporations use states as playing fields to do whatever they want and move capital to whoever serves their needs best. 🗣️ The ability to express ones opinion on matters that differ from the current mainstream opinion has been widely reduced and in times of corporate media and corporate tech platforms, censorship and framing have become powerful tools that eradicate the most valuable tool of a democracy - open discussions on a factual basis between different groups. 🪙 Justice is blind to corporate crimes (e.g. cum ex) but strict with protest and normal people making a simple mistake in their tax declaration. If you disagree, try to sue the corporate that's poisoning your environment and see how far you get. ⚠️ Framing the danger for democracy solely to the rise of right wing parties is just populism. A democracy should value all its people, however no established party actually targets skyrocketing inequalities and so leaves an open field for right-wing populist to play on. Those parties are not the reason, they are the symptom. A day before Su preme Court's verdict on whether interim bail is to be given to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Enforcement Directorate told the apex court that if he is granted relief for campaigning, all politicians arrested under any charge across the country would seek parity. An ED officer told TOI if Kejriwal, who is not contes ting elections, is to be given interim bail to campaign for AAP, then it would also enable pro-Khalistan 'Waris Punjab De' leader Amritpal Singh,lodged in Dibrugarh jail and contesting from Khadoor Sahib in Punjab, to seek interim bail to campaign for himself. In its affidavit, ED said SC, while rejecting bail to another excise case accused, former Delhi deputy CM Ma nish Sisodia, had said, "Rule of law means that laws apply equally to all citizens, including the state. Rule of law also mandates objective and fair treatment to all." ED said campaign for a party was neither a fundamental nor a constitutional right and not even a legal right. A person in custo- dy has no right to even cast his/ her vote, it said, adding that the agency did not know of any in stance of a political leader be- ing granted interim bail for campaigning even though not contesting elections. The legal team of CM Kejriwal raised strong objection to En forcement Directorate submitting an affidavit after comple- tion of hearings and just a day before the SC bench is to decide on interim bail. AAP said Kejriwal's team has filed a formal complaint with SC's registry against the "blatant disregard of legal procedures". Questioning ED's objection, AAP said even after two years of investigation in the liquor policy case, not a single rupee or incriminating evidence had been recovered. Oh maybe those who travelled to other continents like the Ethiopians (or nomads) gave their continent, the part they knew, a name. Hunter gatherers and the kingdom nations of the South have no stories that we know of about travelling to farthest lands. The stories we know in the farthest South, say from AmaZulu, about other countries are amaXhosalands, Swaziland, Lesotho, Soshangane(Mozambique related), and Zimbabwe(Ndebele). We found Egypt in Biblical history but we did not know it(and there it was also referred to as an oppressor and bad people). Now we travel and are able to see it. It’s easy to conflate different kinds of information from outside sources and then make it our own and then screw ourselves. Maybe we should propose a new name for the continent that does not relate to a past we do not know and a past that never united us like it is today with globalisation. If a name that comes up was not mentioned by our immediate ancestors then we should not adopt that name for the collective. We are now able to archive our cultural knowledge better than before and so we have a chance of creating a new archive that will represent us well to posterity(similar to building a new city). An archive that will help posterity to flourish and not to be slaves/ slave minded. Even our national anthems should show glory and victory instead of pain and oppression. This is why when we campaign for elections we reinforce victimhood (beggarhood) in our people by giving them food parcels as if they should be happy with scraps. #democracy #InformationDemocracy #history

The Supreme Court ordered the State Bank of India (SBI) to release the data on the controversial electoral bonds, ensuring some amount of transparency in the electoral process. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made a step towards ensuring a level playing field for political contestation irrespective of wealth quotient. But this ‘step’ is very small in the long road ahead for ‘free and fair’ electoral participation. While corporate funding is a big issue at hand, it is necessarily limited to the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) alone. For instance, according to a study on electoral bonds, by the Association for Democratic Reforms, political parties received corporate donations of over Rs 920 crore at the time of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP, Indian National Congress (INC), All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) were the five national parties to whom corporate contributions were examined in the study. Notably in the financial year 2020, the BJP received the most amount of corporate donations, followed by the INC and NCP. The largest donors to the BJP and INC were ITC Limited and Jankalyan Electoral Trust, in that order. Prudent Electoral Trust came in second. It should be mentioned that the majority of the BJP and INC’s overall revenue still comes from donations made through electoral bonds. As the nation paves its way for the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, the challenge of wealth in elections becomes crucial to address. India has a highly competitive playing field and competitive elections and thriving political parties are necessary for a democracy to function properly. The integration and mobilisation of citizens, the expression and gathering of interests, are functions requiring huge capital investments.
