The United Nations says it is preparing for the third meeting of special envoys on Afghanistan, scheduled to take place on June 30th and July 1st in Doha, the capital city of Qatar. During a press briefing on Tuesday, May 21, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that the two-day meeting aims to increase international engagement with Afghanistan, under Taliban control, in a more coherent, coordinated, and structured manner. He also mentioned that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has extended an advance invitation to the Taliban authorities, who had refused to join the previous round, to participate in the forthcoming meeting of special envoys. According to the UN spokesperson, the organization’s Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, visited Kabul on May 18 and met with Taliban authorities, including the regime’s deputy prime minister, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, and its foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, to discuss the upcoming meeting. In a social media post following her visit to Afghanistan, Ms. DiCarlo expressed her commitment to working for the country and advocating for the rights of Afghans, particularly the fundamental rights of women and girls. “Just ended a visit to Afghanistan to continue preparing the ground for talks in Doha on the international community’s engagement with the country. In their joint move, inspired in large measure by the ongoing Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, the governments of Norway, Ireland, and Spain said they would make the formal recognition next week on May 28. In response, Israel recalled its ambassadors from Oslo and Dublin as an initial sign of displeasure and protest. Israel’s foreign minister Israel Katz said in a public statement that the move to recognize Palestine was a “distorted step” by the countries which he claimed was “an injustice to the memory of the victims of 7/10, a blow to efforts to return the 128 hostages, and a boost to Hamas and Iran’s jihadists, which undermines the chance for peace and questions Israel’s right to self-defense.” Katz warned that “Israel will not remain silent” in the face of what it perceives as a betrayal by its European allies and that “further severe consequences” would follow for those making such a decision. All 193 Member States of the United Nations are represented in this unique forum to discuss and work together on a wide array of international issues covered by the UN Charter. The circular shape of the hall's rotunda is echoed by the United Nations seal over the podium and below it, the speakers' rostrum. Striated walls angling upward from the second story are punctuated by both an electronic vote tabulation board flanking the seal and by two tiers of glass windows enclosing television, photo and interpreters' booths. The blue, green and gold General Assembly Hall - 165 feet long by 115 feet wide, with a 75- foot ceiling - occupies the second, third and fourth floors. Representatives of Member States sit behind tables facing a raised speaker's rostrum and podium. The Assembly Hall accommodates 193 delegations. Each delegation has six seats - three at the tables for full delegates and three behind them for their alternates.

A recent report from the Observatory of Political and Economic Networks (@oopensyr) has revealed that the UN is increasingly partnering with Assad regime cronies, organizations which support the Assad regime, and organizations with connections to human rights abuses. In 2021-22, UN procurements from suppliers with ties to human rights abusers increased, as did those owned by sanctioned individuals. Twenty of the public suppliers in the UN procurements database were Syrian state institutions. Using leaked data from the Syrian Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, the report also uncovered UN funding for the Syria Trust for Development (spearheaded by Asma al-Assad) and a partnership with the son of a former Minister of Defense. One NGO, “Nour for Relief and Development”, is chaired by Mohammad Jalbout, who is accused of collaborating with Syria’s security services to extract forced confessions against opposition activists through torture. He recently represented Syrian civil society in Geneva in January 2024. This damning exposé comes ahead of the Ministerial Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” on Monday 27 May. The OPEN report calls on donors to increase aid, but to conduct independent monitoring of the UN’s operations in Syria. Biodiversity is of paramount importance to humanity, providing a myriad of benefits known as "ecosystem services." Among other things, it provides us with food, protects us from the elements, contributes to our well-being, and inspires awe. Today, this same biodiversity is threatened by human activities. Industrialization, intensive agriculture, deforestation, and overfishing are among the main threats that impact biodiversity and, consequently, the survival of the human species.
