There was an evangelist that worked with troubled teens (which given everything we are learning about the troubled teen industry he is already a red flag) who was invited to speak at the church I grew up in. He also preached at the high school summer camp that visit. In one of his purity culture messages, he talked about a "soul tie" he'd created with a girl when he was a child. He described it as a crush and how they had shared the romantic embrace of a pinky lock (picture a pinky promise style finger lock) while watching tv on the couch with plenty of space between them. He went on to describe a feeling of something being "wrong" in his adult life and how he prayed for God to show him his hidden sin. This perceived indiscretion flashed in his mind, and he begged God's forgiveness for this "soul tie" he'd created. I was so stricken with anxiety about the few crushes I'd had in my life and how awful a sinner I was for all of these "soul ties." Now, looking back, I can only laugh at the absurdity and grieve over the emotional manipulation my already over taxed nervous system endured. I don't believe in soul ties resulting from some of the most benign human experiences one can have. It's superstition that has no place in modernity or in Christianity. The few crushes I can remember having mean nothing to me now and the one boyfriend I had before my husband is no better. Purity culture creates unnecessary anxiety and undue pressure to go against what is only a natural developmental experience. Sound off in the comments if you were there for the pinky lock soul tie message at youth camp. Or share a stitious message you were told about purity and/or soul ties. Edit: it would also be good to point out that if you believe your soul is sealed by God for eternity, then a peck on the lips, a shallow crush or a pinky lock shouldn't be more powerful than God. If you do believe both, you might want to sit with the incongruity.
