With the developing narrative around the EU directive on adequate minimum wages, workers should not be duped into believing that the EU is some sort of a benign benefactor for workers’ rights. The EU directive on adequate minimum wage claims to be an effort to reduce working poverty and inequality by improving the adequacy of statutory minimum wage as well as the promotion of collective bargaining. While the minimum wage is a safety net, for many workers the minimum wage becomes the norm, and in fact the de facto maximum wage for large numbers of workers. This directive recognises that strong collective bargaining systems play an important role in ensuring adequate minimum wage protection. Increased collective bargaining without a comparable increase in Union membership and workers’ rights will not improve the balance of power between workers and employers. I thought today I’d share some thoughts on my current read and showcase some of my favourite Non-Fiction books. The wonderful team @bloomsburypublishing sent me a proof of this one a few months ago, I had a feeling this book was going to make me angry but I had no idea that it would turn into one of my favourite non-fiction books. There’s so much I have learnt and so much I want to say but I think this is a book you really should read yourself, I mean I could ramble on all day about the topics covered. The introduction set the scene perfectly and some of the quotes simply blew my mind, I guess it’s all about seeing the bigger picture. “ This sense of unfreedom is grounded in the deep disparities of power that exist within capitalist societies - many of which are completely invisible. Most people are denied autonomy over their lives, yet we are consistently told we are free to choose the way we live. Life under capitalism means life under a system in which decisions about how we work, how we live and what we buy have already been taken by somebody else. Life under capitalism means living in a planned economy while being told that you are free.” Facebook, Amazon, the banks, back handers, consumerism, monopolies, this book covers it all and it’s written in a format that’s so accessible. This had the potential to be boring but it was everything but. I’ve got a further 50 pages to go but this is going to be a five star for me, without a doubt. I’ve already ordered myself another copy so that it can sit proudly amongst one of my favourite book shelves. A heart bursting welcome back to Jingdezhen since my last visit in 2018. Post pandemic 2024, it’s hardly recognizable and you really need to dig to find the soul of the place and that’s if you know what to look for. A combination of post pandemic economic decimation, influx of funding from the government to turn JDZ into a mainland China tourist attraction, a whole generation of elders dying and retiring, and a younger generation not finding the value or sustainable pay for physically demanding work. This also came with the displacement of locals for the destruction of older architecture for the creation of bigger, better, newer buildings that all look the same, higher rents and food cost but not higher wages. I saw small parts of this happen in 2015 and 2018 but this is massive gentrification in a span of less than 10 years. All to sell to the hoards of tourists coming via fast train daily. My friends complain about the amount of people that take over the city and how they can’t get a taxi or even go out to eat. I know it drives their local economy but this bubble will burst and I wonder what JDZ will look like in 1-2 years. Happy to visit the Buddha and Mao master craftsman, who both remembered me and gave me little gifts. 🚩✊ Continued Solidarity with the Unite members at Basildon's CNH tractor plant workers striking for the 7.4% pay increase they were promised and deserve! ✊🚩 Unite members at Basildon CNH tractor plant started nine days of strike action on Tuesday May 14th in response to the company’s breaking a 2022 pay agreement to increase pay in 2024 by the average rate of inflation for the year, which would have been 7.4%. Instead CNH have offered 4% based on the fact that the official inflation rate has recently dropped. Compare this with a multi-million pound package to the CEO who took away 310 times the pay of the average worker at CNH Group in 2022 (£19 million). Whilst this year’s pay is the immediate trigger, it seems that years of below inflation increases, and general mistreatment and lack of respect for the workforce has also played a part in this action. Despite the change in the weather meaning a damp barbecue, everyone seemed in good spirits and action will continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until May 30th.
