đȘ§đ« The pro-Palestinian encampments that once crowded U.S. campuses have mostly dissipated now, vanishing with the end of the academic year. But the heightened student protests that erupted in Aprilâfirst at @Columbia University before quickly spreading coast to coastâseem likely to continue in some form when the fall semester arrives, bringing students and their political concerns back to campus. That likelihood only increases if the war between Israel and Hamas is still ongoing. This time, however, colleges will have the benefit of summer break to prepare and plan for the next wave of student protests. Itâs time they may well need, given Congressâs harsh scrutiny of administratorsâ protest responses and the acknowledgment of some college presidents that their student codes of conduct and disciplinary policies were not designed to handle the rise of encampments. Compounding the potential headache for administrators is the 2024 election, in which Democratic President @JoeBiden is taking on former Republican Presidentâand convicted felonâ@RealDonaldTrump in a repeat matchup that has left many young voters disillusioned. Now college leaders are heading into the summer with fall protests in mind. đTap the link in bio to read the full story. #ProPalestinian #Protests #CampusProtests #HigherEd

USC student journalists talked to LA Public Press about what it's like covering the anti-genocide encampment on their campus. Over the last month, students across the nation set up encampments on their campuses, protesting Israeli assaults and genocide in Gaza. As students demanded their universities divest from weapons manufacturers and other companies linked to the Israeli military, they were met with violence, both from police and counter protestors. Student journalists found themselves uniquely positioned to cover a national news story. Multimedia student journalist Makayla Idelburg said that she felt âresponsible for updating the world on what was happening with these protests.â Mohammed Zain Shafi Khan, the incoming executive editor of Annenberg Media, described the experience of covering the historic moment as a âtrial by fire.â Read their perspectives, go to the link in the bio, or lapublicpress.org.

Repost from @theatlantic âą Speaking to donors earlier this month, former President Donald Trump laid out his plan for dealing with campus protests: Just deport the protesters.â â Some protesters have been charged with crimes, but protest itself âis an essential element of American freedom and is not itself against the law,â David A. Graham writes. And although some of those protesting the war in Gaza and American support for it are international students, âno evidence indicates that most or even a large minority of those protesting on campuses are non-U.S. citizens ⊠In short, Trump is proposing a heavy-handed plan that wouldnât solve the problem.ââ â âTrumpâs remarks about protesters follow a pattern seen elsewhere, in which he takes an idea already circulating in conservative circles and ratchets it up a notch,â Graham writes. Donald Trump vows to target pro-Palestinian campus protests if elected in 2024. He promises to expel student demonstrators, labeling them as radicals, aiming to significantly roll back the movement. Trump's bold stance has ignited a fierce debate on free speech and student activism across the nation. Supporters argue it's a necessary step to maintain order and security, while critics claim it tramples on fundamental rights. The Impact By: Vanguard Staff As journalists and editors, we are often behind the scenesâa voice on a video or a name on a byline and nothing else. This week, we felt it was important to be more. While we are journalists, we are also students, and seeing the events that unfolded in our community impacted us all differently. As journalists, we are first observers, reporters, distanced and unemotional and unbiased, but as students, when something like this happens in our community around us, itâs hard to be fully that. This is a place for us to recognize that impact on us as journalists and as students to live in that dichotomy of being both. The Protest By: J.M. Vincent Amid the nationwide college campus protests against the war in Gaza, comparisons are being made between these present-day movements and the student-led organizing that took place on the same college campuses during the Vietnam War. Many who partook in the Vietnam War protests are now commenting on the tactics and messaging used by todayâs protesters. A question debated is, can these two moments in history truly be compared? The jury is still out. Building occupations were also a throughline. 1970 protesters occupied Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU) as a de facto headquarters. âWe were camped out in that building for a week,â said Weiskopf, the then-student organizer. âAnd there was talk of how we trashed the place, but no. There werenât holes in the walls. There werenât burnt carpets. There werenât broken windows. There werenât torn curtains. We left the place, and we cleaned up after ourselves after we left, as best as we could.â -Doug Weiskopf 1970 war protest organizer #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slide 1: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard Slides 2-3: Courtesy of Portland State University Archives from the 1970 Viking Yearbook
Dear Female Protestors Have you seen the recent video of the five Israeli hostages that was all over the media this week? The one that showed the young Israeli women who could get pregnant, according to their captors? If you have not seen it, I beg you to watch it. If you have seen it, how can you stay silent or make excuses for such horrific behavior by Hamas? Another separate, recently released video from a Hamas soldier captured by the Israelis says that he, his father and a cousin raped a woman before his father killed her. We are all human beings. We are all sisters. We cannot live in a world where we think that rape is ok or where we look the other way. At least I cannot. We may not see eye to eye on this conflict or agree on definitions of genocide, apartheid and colonialism, but can we please agree that rape is not resistance? That rape is wrong? I have maintained since the start of the war that any life lost is one too many. War is awful. Death is awful, especially of innocent civilians. Can we add rape to the awful list? As a woman, whatever your ideological views, watch the video and think about how you would feel if one of those women were your sister, your friend, your colleague, or even you. It is wrong â it must be wrong in whatever view of society or the world we have. And because rape is wrong, why are you not using your voice in these protests to say so? Stand up against rape. Some have suggested that this is âanother Zionist lieâ or deny that any rapes happened. If you feel that way, I charge you with your own crime against humanity for making excuses, for looking the other way and for being antisemitic to such a degree that you do not see these five beautiful 19 year old girls as human beings who deserve the support of all women and the urgent call for their immediate return. #RapeIsRape #RapeIsNotResistance #BelieveIsraeliWomen #AmYisraelChai #BringThemHomeNow #HamasTerrorists #CampusProtests #EndJewHatred #StopAntisemitism

The Community Thoughts on statements from student groups By: Macie Harreld, Cameron Rodriguez, JJ Christensen In the immediate aftermath of the library occupationâs dispersal, many student groups put out statements detailing their organizationâs stance on the issue. Many were heavily critical of the universityâs cooperation with the PPB, called for a divestment from Boeing and stated their support for the student and Palestinian cause. âThe professional staff of the cultural resource centers received warnings from several people that our resource centersâ public statements made in the first and second weeks of May were in potential violation of university policy,â stated Remi, a student employee. âThe warning given to the CRC admin argued that these statements were potentially in violation of university policy as they expressed what are considered âpersonal viewsâ on university platforms.â They also stated their belief that the administrationâs response to these posts, in particular, is an example of a Palestine exception. #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slide 1: Eva Sheehan/Pacific Sentinel Slide 2: Sergio Cervantes/PSU Vanguard Slide 3: Liam Schmitt/PSU Vanguard
The police Protests continue, and so do PSU Alerts By: ZoĂ« Buhrmaster and Isaiah Burns On May 9, demonstrators held a smaller encampment in front of Hoffman Hall. Protestors set up three tents in front of the building around 9 p.m., inciting a police response within 30 minutes. A team of approximately 20 PPB officers entered the premises, taking down and confiscating tents. Protestors responded by moving toward the police, eventually prompting police to abandon tents and retreat. PPB Central Bike Squad and vehicular PPB brandished pepper spray and took photos of protestors on their phones, driving over a tent as they left. Protesters continue to host rallies and pro-Palestine community events on campus, as the university has yet to respond to student demands since negotiations broke down on May 1. âI have had to grapple a lot with whether or not I can continue studying under an institution that is so willing to deploy police on students to protect property while violently assaulting students,â Arlo said. #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slides 1-2: Isaiah Burns/PSU Vanguard Slide 3: Kat Leon/PSU Vanguard
The Community Thoughts on campus impacts By: Macie Harreld, Cameron Rodriguez, JJ Christensen Even for those students who were not directly impacted by the police, the protests or the administrative action in response to the protests, many still expressed frustration. With the campus closed, many classes canceled and the library unavailable, many students felt disenfranchised. A collective of Masters in Social Work students for Palestinian Freedom emailed their own fears and grievances with the school. Various students in the program felt frustrated with the administration, with one anonymous student mentioning that if they âhad not already sunk so much money into their education, [they] would not be returning.â The frustration reflects some studentsâ desire to no longer have connections to the school. âFollowing last weekâs events and PSUâs continued refusal to divest from genocide, they have ruined their reputation as a recommended school from both alumni and current students,â the collective wrote. #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slide 1: Eva Sheehan/Pacific Sentinel Slides 2-3: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard

The Library From the Librarians By: Alyssa Anderson Emery explained much of the discourse surrounding the library occupation and its impact has revolved around the building and the collections but not around the library faculty and staff, who have also been affected by the situation. Emery said she feels disenfranchised by the way the media and the campus community have been ignoring the people who helped create and maintain the library. âYou can look at examples throughout history; itâs one of the go-to moves,â Paschild said. âAnd I know that wasnât the intention here, but I think itâs hard to not have a very visceral response when you see a library taken over. The Community Thoughts on antisemitism By: Macie Harreld, Cameron Rodriguez, JJ Christensen Many Jewish or Israeli members of the PSU community have expressed feeling hurt, targeted and ostracized by the local protests and the library occupation. They point to some of the slogans and chants repeated by protestors and graffiti in the library as examples of rhetoric which they believe is actively perpetuating harm against their community. Ardenâa Jewish Israeli graduate student at PSUâagreed the rhetoric of campus protests has contributed to a university environment which makes him feel unsafe. âItâs very unidirectional,â the student said. âItâs very aggressive. Itâs veryâitâs scary to be on campus and just see so much hatred be an acceptable form of expression on the campus.â The Jewish community on campus do not all relate to Israel or the campus protests in the same way. âIn recent times I have, however, felt alienated, not from the school, but from other Jewish students,â said Avery, a PSU student. âMany of them refuse to recognize any malicious acts perpetrated by the state of Israel, and treat any discussion or condemnation of such acts as Jewish self-hatred.â #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slide 1: Sergio Cervantes/PSU Vanguard Slide 2: Courtesy of Anonymous Student Slide 3: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard Slide 4: Sergio Cervantes/PSU Vanguard

In June 1972, almost 1,000 delegates from 35 international unions, including Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta from the United Farm Workers, met at the Teamstersâs Hall in St. Louis to organize against Vietnam. âAs men and women of labor who treasure our countryâs heritage and future,â they proclaimed their âresponsibility to harness every effort to end the war now.â A large contingent of student radicals also realized that real change in US foreign policy wasnât possible without a working-class coalition. Some SDS and Columbia activists distributed a leaflet telling students to âbuild ties with workersâ to âunite with those who have the powerâ to end the war. That coalition proved to be a flimsy one, but itâs more than the Columbia student protesters of 2024 have to say about the working class or veterans. Todayâs campus agitators are right to speak out against the slaughter of Palestinian civilians, but theyâre too often doing so in the bloodless academic language of anti-Americanism. The Library The damages By: Alyssa Anderson The protestâled by students and supported by non-student organizersâsought to draw attention to global issues while advocating for non-violence. However, despite their intentions, the occupation significantly damaged the library and its resources. Some Oregon state documents containing different statutes and laws were damaged and may require re-binding. With no commercial bindery in Oregon or Washington, they would have to ship these materials to Nebraskaâan expensive process which Emery said could take months. These materials were a necessary resource for a program started in the past year which connected prison inmates with higher education materials and other tools to better their lives while incarcerated. Since inmates cannot access electronic documents, physical documents are necessary. #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slide 1: Courtesy of Anonymous Student Slide 2: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard Slide 3: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard
The police âInevitableâ police force By: ZoĂ« Buhrmaster and Isaiah Burns Students and faculty stated their greatest concerns about involving the police on a wide scale were the safety risks this would bring to students and other demonstrators. In one instance caught on video by Vanguard, police randomly selected a person from the crowd of linked arms and dragged them into the cloud of a smoke grenade before throwing them onto the ground. They then lifted the individual up and arrested them. Tactical yellow smoke rose in the background as individuals standing nearby were threatened by officers with pepper spray and pepper guns to back away. One womanâa studentâreceived bruising and abrasions to her breast when a police officer reportedly reached under her clothing while trying to pull her to the ground. Fellow protesters reported immediately after seeing the same officer repeatedly striking a Black PSU student in the face until he was pulled off by another officer. #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slides 1-2: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard Slide 3: Isaiah Burns/PSU Vanguard Slide 4: Quinton Prudhome/Clackamas Print
The Community Thoughts on the police By: Macie Harreld, Cameron Rodriguez, JJ Christensen A repeated concern among many protestors, PSU faculty and students was police presence on campus. Many students cited the administrationâs choice to involve the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) as a violation of their right to protest peacefully and an incitation of violence against students and protestors. Lark, a student who lives in Blackstone, was arrested during the height of the campus protests for crossing the perimeter tape line which police had set up on the steps of their dorm⊠Lark explained the police had situated the tape line on the dormitory entrance. âI, yeah, just got on the other side of it,â Lark said. âI didnât have any intention of getting involved in the protest just because, as pathetic as it sounds, I had a lot of homework due.â Lark ended up being detained for eight hours. #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slides 1-2: Sergio Cervantes/PSU Vanguard Slide 3: Alyssa Anderson/PSU Vanguard

đ«đȘ§ At pro-Palestinian student encampments on campuses nationwide, a familiar chantâa demandâhas rung out: âDisclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest.â Students have used the oft-repeated protest slogan to call for greater transparency in how colleges invest endowment funds and to urge officials to pull institutional dollars from a range of companies that includes weapons manufacturers and consumer favorites. The core grievance for students is that such companies are profiting off the war between Israel and Hamas as civilian deaths mount, with total Palestinian casualties now reportedly numbering upwards of 35,000. While weapons manufacturers such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin are key targets, so too are Google, Amazon and numerous other megacorporations that do business with the Israeli government or are tangentially tied to companies that work with the military or are otherwise connected to the war effort. In a global economy, the ties can be both numerous and nebulous. As protests have continued for weeks on some campuses, presidents have taken various approaches to the encampments and to student demands. Some administrators have agreed to weigh divestment requests while others have flatly rebuffed such calls, in some cases suggesting their hands were tied due to state laws. But what would divestment from companies connected to Israel look likeâand can it work in todayâs complex, international marketplace? đTap the link in bio to read the full story. #Israel #ProPalestinian #Protests #CampusProtests #HigherEd
Pt. 3 The Library From the protestors By: Alyssa Anderson According to the organizers, most of the damageâbesides the graffitiâoccurred within the first hour, including the broken computers, vending machines, etc. After that, a protocol was established to keep peace within the library. Patrols ensured people didnât go to the higher floors, and people who caused problems or damaged property were warned or kicked out. âAccording to James, student use was still encouraged by the community during the protest. âWhatâs happening here today is no different than when students come in anyway,â James said. âIt [the library] looks a little bit different⊠We may be wearing different clothing, flying a different flag. But the point is, these are still your peers here. You may not recognize them, but nothing has changed. We want what the university wants. And we want people to be able to foster their education here. And if you need absolutely anything, you can talk to absolutely anyone, and we will find the right person for you to get your needs met.â #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slides 1-3: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard
According to this recent Harvard Harris Poll, Israel is below Ukraine but above the Supreme Court when it comes to favorability. But the best news is that Israel is way ahead of campus protestors, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. đȘđ» The world is slightly less crazy than it seems. The police Secret negotiations By: ZoĂ« Buhrmaster and Isaiah Burns On April 30, PSU President Ann Cudd opened up secret negotiations with protesters occupying the library, with facilitation by three faculty members: Professor Stephanie Wahab, Assistant Professor Molly Benitez and Senior Research Assistant Colleen Carroll. Having earlier united in the shared goal of acting as a bridge of communication between students and administration, the three reached out to Cudd and the students inside the library to offer assistance. During the negotiations, they served as liaisons between the two groups. âSome of the concerns that we heard was an inability to trust what the administration was saying,â Carroll said. âThe requirement to collect student names felt unacceptable, and there could have been alternatives to that. Unfortunately, that didnât happen.â The faculty members claim they spent most of the night making constant attempts to stall the administration from bringing police onto campus, citing instances and statistics of police violence to prevent Cudd from making the call. #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slide 1: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard Slide 2: Sergio Cervantes/PSU Vanguard Slide 3: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard

Pt 1 The Community Thoughts on the movement By: Macie Harreld, Cameron Rodriguez, JJ Christensen As for the students involved in the protests, the concerns of academic or legal repercussions ultimately did not outweigh the social or political change they were advocating for. âI do think that there is definitely a threat of us being expelled, of us being removed from campus and of them trying to stifle the movement for liberation,â said one member of the Portland Revolutionary Student Union group. âBut it doesnât matter. I donât care if Iâm expelled, I donât care if I die. We are here to fight for liberation, to fight against the genocide of the people. My life is nothing.â Other students spoke about the mutual support and local community building which took place during the protests. âIâve been really proud of students for showing up. Everything Iâve been seeing has made me really proud of peopleâs direction, of the objectives and of how people are bringing themselves into the space and to the conversation. That is the community culture of PSU that I value, and is keeping me here in spite of the disingenuine responses by our president and by campus police and Portland police.â -Arlo-PSU Graduate Student #psuvanguard #portlandstate #portlandstatevikings #portlandstateuniversity #portlandstatenews #portlandnews #studentnews #campusprotests Slide 1: Benjamin Wenck/PSU Vanguard Slide 2: Alyssa Anderson/PSU Vanguard Slide 3: JM Vincent/PSU Vanguard

đȘ§đ§ââïž Campus battles over building takeovers and student encampments related to protests over the Israel-Hamas war have led to a wave of litigation against colleges across the country. Many of those institutions are now facing lawsuits for alleged unlawful treatment of protesters, including suspensions, expulsions and arrests. Lawsuits from suspended pro-Palestinian protesters, such as those at Arizona State and Indiana Universities, say certain institutions violated aspects of their First Amendment rights in barring them from campus during allegedly peaceful protests. Meanwhile, Jewish students, such as those at the University of California at Los Angeles, Northwestern and Rutgers Universities, allege in legal filings that their universities didnât protect them from antisemitic harassment amid the protests. And unionized campus workers have filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against institutions such as Harvard and Brown Universities, arguing that crackdowns on pro-Palestinian protesters violated workersâ rights. The onslaught of litigation doesnât surprise higher education and legal experts, who spent the better part of this academic year observing how university administrators struggled to balance campus safety with free speech protections in the face of mounting public criticism and political interference by state and federal lawmakers. đTap the link in bio to read the full story. #CampusProtests #Protests #Israel #Hamas #HigherEd

Two days worth of viral encampments being suppressed by college administrators and government officials lead many encampments to pop up around the nation. On April 25th, the UCLA encampment was attacked by counter-protesters using fireworks, injuring 15 people. I was glued to my phone watching these events unfold. It was undeniable that these simultaneous encampments were historical, similar to the Vietnam protests in the â60s. My peers felt the same way at our Tuesday pitch meeting, so we planned to cover the UCLA encampment on Friday, May 3rd. đ đ€· When Zeno, a second-year MBA student at @MIT, learned that he had received an interim suspension for participating in pro-Palestinian protests on the universityâs campus, his first worry wasnât his upcoming final exams or even if he would be able to complete his degree at the prestigious institution. It was whether he and his daughter would have somewhere to sleep in the coming days. Zeno, who is identified only by his surname for privacy, is one of over 2,400 graduate students who live in one of MITâs eight graduate student residence buildings, and one of over 400 who live on campus with their families. On May 8, he received notification from the university that he was receiving an interim suspension, which meant he would be barred from campus and evicted from his housing effective immediatelyâthough the next day, university leaders told students they could have until May 15, one week later, to leave. Zeno was among the students MIT had asked to leave their encampment by 2:30 p.m. on May 6 and were informed that failing to do so could result in being evicted from their housing. According to the university and news reports from that day, all but a handful of people left, but protesters subsequently rallied just outside the encampment, eventually tearing down the barriers surrounding the area and re-establishing the encampment. In the suspension notice the university sent to Zeno, administrators say they are investigating his conduct at the May 6 rally, which he told Inside Higher Ed he did participate in. A later communication listed six policies he is accused of violating, including policies regarding disorderly conduct, property damage and the use of campus facilities. đTap the link in bio to read the full story. #MIT #Protests #CampusProtests #HigherEd
