During the Civil War, Hampton Park in Charleston, SC became an outdoor prison for Union soldiers and more than 250 African American soldiers died there and was buried in mass graves. At the end of the Civil War, black ministers, and other missionaries, with determination, led the effort to give the soldiers who fought for the freedom of slaves a proper burial. On May 1, 1865, they organized a parade to honor them. The crowd consisted of thousands, including African American children leading the procession. This was the first observance of what is now recognized as Memorial Day.
