Neottia bifolia (southern twayblade) is a diminutive orchid native to much of eastern North America. Its long, forked labellum is probably its most prominent distinguishing character and also makes for quite the elegant flower up close. N. bifolia seems to prefer acidic conditions and generally appears in bogs and pine woodlands. Its flowers, only a few millimeters across, bloom rather early and quickly blend into the growing vegetation as the season progresses. For this reason, tracking populations can be difficult, and surviving populations of N. bifolia in mainland Massachusetts were only discovered a few years ago. #neottiabifolia #southerntwayblade #neottia #nativeorchids #nativeplants #springbotany #orchidaceae #floraofmassachusetts #floraofnewengland #endangeredplants #plantphotography

Here's my front garden today, pictured from the front and from the back. It's a small space but it sure packs a big punch! I've got phlox (creeping and garden), beebalm, goldenrod, spiderwort, butterfly weed, and common milkweed packed in here. But the crowning beauty is this weeping redbud, she's stretching all the way to the sidewalk this year! Don't ever let a small city lot discourage you from planting a native plant garden! It can and will flourish ✨️ 🌸🩷🦋 #pennsylvanianativeplants #nativeplantgarden #nativeplants #citygarden #urbangarden

We had such a great time with the Kapi’olani Community College students this semester! They inventoried more than 300 trees on campus, identifying their species, taking various measurements, and putting that info on a statewide database. They also assisted with our other projects: taking care of the trees/plants on the Fort Ruger Pathway; planting native plants in the Kaimukī rain garden; and assisting in tree workshops with children. They did these activities as a service-learning project for their ecology and botany classes, enriching their learning and supporting community efforts. We thank the students for their hard work this semester! #ServiceLearning #NativeTrees #NativePlants #TreeCampusUSA

You probably have these weeds growing in your yard, and they may look the same, but they're not! The one on the left, video on slide 2, is red dead nettle. AKA Purple dead nettle. A medically beneficial plant and used for anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal purposes. The one on the right, video on slide 3, is bugleweed. AKA Ajuga. It's not as useful... You can tell the difference easily by looking at the shape of the stem. Red/Purple dead nettle has a distinctly square stem, almost weirdly square lol. They're both considered weeds as they're not native to Turtle Island (North America) and spread quickly if not managed. I guess I'm teaching you all about native and introduced plant species now 😅

Wondering what this Saturday's stewardship day is all about? From 10 am to noon, we'll be at Robinson Woods Preserve hand-pulling vinca (also called lesser periwinkle), an aggressive groundcover that crowds out native plants. Check out these photos to see examples of how the vinca at Robinson Woods is taking over space that could be utilized by native spring ephemerals, like the much-loved prairie trillium. Please email our Stewardship Manager Dan at [email protected] if you plan to give us a hand this Saturday. #vinca #trillium #prairietrillium #threatened #nativeplants #volunteer #chikamingopenlands #col #stewardship #robinsonwoods #wildflowers #spring #ephemerals #workday #nature #naturepreserves #swmichigan

Heuchera ‘Carnival Watermelon’ (Hybrid Coralbells). Everybody has to learn to get along in my garden or you get removed. I’ve had several of these ‘Carnival Watermelon’ Heuchera in the garden for at least a decade and they never disappoint. They are all budded and will begin flowering this week. If I find time to remove the withering flower stems (deadheading), the flowering season will extend well into summer. While Heuchera don’t like to be smothered by other plants, this one is blending nicely with several native perennials including Uvularia perfoliata (Perfoliate Bellwort), Iodanthus pinnatifidus (Purple Rocket) and Polygonatum biflorum var. commutatum (Giant Solomon’s Seal). One big happy family that looks good all season. Note: I spray deer repellent on all of the Heuchera all year long or the deer will eat them down to stubs. #heucheracarnivalwatermelon #garden #gardening #gardeningforwildlife #collectorsgarden #perennials #nativeplants #pollinatorplants #plantnatives #butterflygarden #butterflygardening

Regional variations always make plant ID "interesting". These both are Sickle leaf onion, Allium falcifolium. Usually found on serpentine soils (about 80% of the time). I usually find the dark colored version ("rose-purple" according to the Jepson manual), this photo is from Molok Luyuk in the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. The lighter version is new to me, this is from Pam's Blue Ridge in Marin County. #alliumfalcifolium #pamsblueridge #marincountywildflowers #lakecountywildflowers #molokluyuk #berryessasnowmountainnationalmonument #berryessasnowmountain #IBrakeForWildflowers #wildflowers #nativeplants #wildflowerphotography #californianaturalist #californiawildflowers #californiawildflowerhikes #californianativeplants #calnatshare

Bearberry or kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ) is a low-growing, evergreen shrub with clusters of white or pinkish-white bell-shaped flowers in spring, followed by red berries in the fall. Its dense, mat-forming growth habit makes it an excellent groundcover choice. It's also native to many areas of the U.S., including almost all northern ecoregions as well as all of the Rockies down to west Texas and the plains of both coasts. Kinnikinnick's berries are an important food source for various birds, including grouse, quail, and robins, as well as small mammals like chipmunks and squirrels. Kinnikinnick is well-suited for rock gardens, xeriscapes, or low-maintenance landscapes, as it is drought-tolerant and requires little maintenance once established. It can be used as a groundcover or to create a living mulch around trees or shrubs, suppressing weeds and retaining moisture in the soil. We’ve got an exciting pollinator garden project in the works that we are hoping to get started on this summer with funds from this special event held by the Minocqua Winter Park Tea House. Two of our Winter Park staff members also happened to be very well versed in Wisconsin wildflowers and will be leading a guided hike to see what species we can find at the park. Then we’ll head to the Tea House for high tea, music, and snacks. Everyone will receive their very own tea cup that they can keep. See the event flyer for ticket details. Minocqua Winter Park is an official Monarch Way Station and we are looking to improve pollinator habitat in a few areas around the park starting with a wet meadow entry road garden. All proceeds from this event will go towards buying plants for the pollinator garden. Tickets are very limited, so pick yours up today from the sponsoring businesses listed in the flyer! #pollinatorgarden #savethebees #bees #Monarchs #butterflies #garden #nativeplants #fundraiser

If you want to feed yourself, beneficial insects, and the occasional hummingbird, but not deer–this might be the plant for you. Nodding onion (Allium cernuum) is a Michigan native that, like many of its relatives, is edible to us humans! The (very) strong flavor also makes it pretty resistant to deer, so you can keep enjoying their beautiful purple flowers alongside native pollinators like these shown here. Although the flowers droop (or “nod”) downward, this orientation doesn’t deter bees and hummingbirds, which crawl upside down or hover near the flowers to get their nectar and pollen! Once they’re done, bees will often continue to forage among your crop plants, pollinating them in the process. So whether you want to eat this plant, feed flower visiting animals, or use it to increase the crop yield of your fruits and vegetables–planting nodding onion means someone is going to eat. See them in action after we plant them in our pollinator conservation strips on partnered urban farms! #urbanfarming #pollinators #nativeplants #pollinatorgarden #hummingbird #bumblebee #msu

Point Pleasant is a wetland located in Penfield, IL that boasts of a diverse ecosystem. Wetlands like this one are crucial for maintaining water quality and providing habitat and resources for wildlife. The Champaign County Forest Preserve District has been working on restoring this wetland ecosystem starting in the 1970s. At the start of restoration efforts, they slowly acquired small portions of the land, eventually purchasing the rest of it in 2010. The restoration project was a massive undertaking that involved controlling invasive species, reseeding with native plants, and restoring the natural wetland state. The area had been heavily altered due to agricultural development, which included the installation of drainage tiles and a large ditch that prevented the area from collecting water. In 2020, the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation provided funding for a man-made weir structure that helped control and retain water in the wetland. Following the completion of this extensive restoration project, a trail was created that soon became a favorite spot for bird-watching and admiring the ecological diversity of the wetlands. #nativeplantsofnorthamerica #educationalcontent #midwest #nativespecies #nativeplants #protectourparks #localgem #trees #wildlife #pollinators #conservation

Another forest understory shrub (and a personal favorite of Unity's social media manager), Northern Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is an attractive and useful medium height shrub that grows to 6-12' tall in full sun to full shade locations, though full shade plants may get a bit leggy. With its common name referring to its aromatic qualities, crushing spicebush's leaves will release an intoxicating spicy citrus aroma that smells great and makes it distasteful to hungry deer and rabbits. If its fragrant leaves and tissues don't draw you in, then its attractive, smooth green leaves, beautiful sunny yellow early spring flowers, or vibrant golden yellow fall foliage might also do the trick! Beyond its aesthetics and its aroma, spicebush is also culinarily and ecologically valuable, with bright red berries in the late summer and fall that can be used in place of allspice, and foliage that acts as a primary food source of a few caterpillar species, including the caterpillar for the Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus). As its name might imply, the Spicebush Swallowtail is a beautiful butterfly species with trailing swallow-like wings, whose entire life revolves around the plants they're named for. Planting spicebush will add a valuable butterfly food source, and a wonderfully fragrant plant, to your backyard. #nativeplants #nativeplantsofmaryland #spicebush #lindera #linderabenzoin #butterflies

They’re back! Those friendly ‘experts’ with superhero mascots promising to Protect Your Family and Make Outdoors Fun Again - the mosquito sprayers! They’ll treat once a month or set up a system that treats continuously by spraying as much as 4 times a day. Darn it, there’s even a service that will eradicate spiders from your yard! Wish we were making this up. Mosquito spraying also kills beneficial insects like bees and butterflies that make up the biodiversity necessary to keep our ecosystems healthy.  Mosquito spray drifts (duh!) and when it lands on blooming crops, its residue is highly toxic to foraging insects in the area. See these trucks parked at midday in your neighborhood? When the bees are buzzing and the butterflies are happily fluttering? How on earth could you expect this product to not reach them or dear follower, drift over into your lovely habitat garden? What to do: - Eliminate breeding habitat by tipping and tossing standing water. This is the best first step of mosquito control! - Set up non-toxic mosquito dunks in spring to kill larvae but not other wildlife. * Attract natural predators! Plant natives like Rudbeckia hirta, Joe Pye weed, Echinacea and Asclepias incarnata to draw dragonflies and damselflies to your garden. * Welcome toads to your garden via moist dark hiding places under rocks and logs. * Do not use a bug zapper! They also do not discriminate! * Talk to your neighbor and explain why spraying is bad for everyone. Truthfully, this is the first year we’ve seen very little buzzy activity on the Pagoda dogwood or Red buckeye in spring. It’s frankly eerie in the #narberthlivinglandscape. And so we are sharing photos from this garden in 2023. Because we don’t have any buzzy activity to share in 2024. But we have seen A LOT of mosquito trucks. Fact.

Carex pensylvanica was planted to continue a drift from the other side of the walkway. The rest was seeded with a no mow fescue mix. #ecologicaldesign #nomow #nativeplants #sustainablelandscaping

The Benefits of Professional Landscape Design for Your New York Property Enhancing the outdoor space of your New York property with professional landscape design offers numerous benefits that extend beyond aesthetics. Here are some reasons why investing in professional landscape design is worthwhile: 1. Increased Property Value: A well-designed landscape can significantly boost the curb appeal and overall value of your property. Potential buyers are often willing to pay a premium for homes with attractive and well-maintained outdoor areas. 2. Enhanced Curb Appeal: Professionally designed landscapes create a positive first impression and make your property stand out in the neighborhood. From lush gardens to well-manicured lawns, a visually appealing landscape can captivate passersby and leave a lasting impression. 3. Improved Outdoor Living: A thoughtfully designed outdoor space extends your living area beyond the confines of your home. Whether it's a cozy patio for entertaining guests or a tranquil garden retreat for relaxation, professional landscape design enhances your outdoor living experience. 4. Environmental Benefits: Strategic landscape design can help improve environmental sustainability by reducing water consumption, minimizing runoff, and promoting biodiversity. 5. Long-Term Cost Savings: While upfront costs may be higher for professional landscape design, the long-term savings in maintenance and utility bills can be substantial. I've been hiding in my Stories ☝️ again lately, opting for quick observations between site visits for projects and the hour or so a day I've spent around #threeoaksgarden lately. Is anyone else feeling the full force of spring, at once both exhilarating and overwhelming? 🤪 I looked up yesterday evening around 6 p.m. and thought "when did the leaves fully cover the trees?" (We've been fortunate to receive much-needed rain and remain at least 10 days ahead of our phenological average.) Before long, penstemon season starts. An early bird Penstemon strictus (Rocky Mountain beardtongue) in #theromp has already opened this week, but our #prairie species and selections thereof remain dutifully on schedule. While abundant and common in landscapes, they deserve the attention they get, heralding the transition from spring into summer. The parade will begin soon and I'll try to scurry between projects to capture the many faces of Penstemon digitalis, P. cobaea, and more that anchor the season in my #plantings. 📸 photos from last May by @austinhyler at our favorite bioswale @harkininstitute, which we recently learned will be featured in a book about the project by @bnimarchitects. #naturalgarden #yournaturalgarden #newnaturalism #threeoaksgarden #iowagarden #iowagardening #plantswithstyle #plantingdesign #resilientlandscapes #resilientgarden #morethanturf #planting #ecologicalgarden #naturalgarden #ecologicalgardening #gardendesign #gardenlife #frontyardgarden #wildgarden #meadow #meadowgarden #gardenphotography #gardenphotos #naturalisticgarden #naturalisticgardening #nativeflora #nativeplants ABOUT: Kelly D. The common name selfheal or heal-all for Prunella vulgaris is due to the plant's ubiquity in traditional medicine around the world, including as a fever reducer. New England has one native and one non-native subspecies: Ssp. lanceolata is native and known from CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT. Ssp. vulgaris is non-native and known from CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT. Look for it in human-made or disturbed habitats, meadows and fields, and the shores of rivers or lakes. —Go Botany Photos: Selfheal or heal-all (Prunella vulgaris) flowers, © Glen Mittelhauser, © Donald Cameron; flowers and leaves, © Arthur Haines #nativeplanttrust #nativeplants #newenglandnativeplants #newengland #plants #selfheal #commonselfheal #healall #prunellavulgaris #medicinalplants #medicinalwildflowers #newenglandwildflowers #wildflowers #nativewildflowers

A little less lawn @crefeldschool! I met this morning with students learning about sustainability and shared information about native plants and the wildlife they support. Then the group got to work digging and designing and had a pollinator garden planted in no time! Absolutely delightful! Many thanks to their teacher, Nicole Greaves, for inviting Journeywork. #nativeplants #pollinatorgardens #schoolgardens

The flavour of may is Waldmeister; at least it is, if, like I, you grew up in Germany. There, and in some other continental European countries, it is a popular flavour for sweets and beverages, including beer. Galium odoratum, Sweet Woodruff or sweet scented bedstraw in English, is a small woodland plant native to Scotland. It may be an indicator of ancient woodlands, and prefers shade and moisture. It can be found in mixed forests, hedgerows, and shadowy garden corners. Delicate white flower umbels bloom in may and sit atop a rectangular stem, ringed by tidy, glossy whirls of six to eight leaves. If you happen upon a carpet of woodruff, pick a stem or two and crush it or let it wilt in the warmth of your hand for a while. As the plant breaks down, it releases a heavenly scent, reminiscent of cinnamon, vanilla, and fragrant hay. This fragrance is coumarin, widely used in cosmetics and familiar from other spices like tonka bean, sweet grass, meadowsweet, and cassia cinnamon. As delicious as it smells and tastes, a health warning is in order: It is an anticoagulant of cumulative toxicity, can be used as a headache remedy, and in concentrated doses as a rat poison. The blood thinner warfarin is derived from it. So it is best used in small quantities and on occasion only. By steeping the wilted stems in warm or acidic liquids, one can capture its beautiful scent to flavour syrup, ice cream, lemonade, jelly, or alcoholic beverages. It pairs beautifully with apple, strawberry and lemon. A very easy way to enjoy it is to steep it in vodka for a few hours for a homemade version of Poland’s Bison Grass Vodka, Zubrowka. #woodruff #waldmeister #galiumodoratum #sweetwoodruff #may #scotland #edinburghfood #edinburgh #edinburghforage #foraging #edibleflowers #coumarin #fairyforest #flavoursofspring #botanicals #nativeplants #edinburghforageandeat

#TBT to Family STEAM night at Eucalyptus Elementary last week, which served as our official unveiling of the space to the school’s families and students. It was so special to see parents and youth alike enjoying the new native garden space, creating art for it (check out those awesome wheatpasted signs!) and learning about all the new plants and pollinators that will be welcome there via these custom QR code markers we made! Each shrub, herb and tree has a scannable QR code along with their name and image to help students with plant identification as they navigate their new art and learning garden 🤓🌿🌈 We’re thrilled to see the interest and engagement growing in the Friendship Garden, right alongside our sage, monkeyflowers and poppies! 🥰

One thing that always intrigues me when seeing plants in nature is where they come from. Living in #socal you see an enormous percentage of non native plants. More than you could ever think. Well, then you have to think, “is it okay or are they invasive?” Much like wild Mustard and Stinknet. Sometimes not, but many times they are. Seemingly harmless but invasive plants contribute to all sorts environmental issues as they outcompete native plants that are vital for ecosystems. This stunning grouping of #gazanialinearis unfortunately is one plant that can and does cause such issues. Native to South Africa it thrives in Southern California where the climate is quite similar, but since not part of the local ecosystem, it does not have natural predators and grows wildly. While still gorgeous, I can’t help think how it will interrupt the natural landscape. #invasiveplants #california #invasivespecies #wildplants #nativeplants #plantphotography #canoneos #lacounty #sangabrielvalley #ecosystems #flowerphotography #eco

Northern parula snacking on bugs in the flowers of a native american plum tree/bush. I think this is probably my favorite species of warbler. They usually stick to the tree tops, but you can find them down lower occasionally during migration. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #parula #northernparula #warblercrazy #warbler #warblers #warblersofinstagram #springmigration #migration #migratorybirds #flowersphotography #nativeflowers #nativeplants #nativefauna #spring #springday

Warm and sunny was the order of the day when the Habitat Stewards took up their pruning tools at Overlook Park yesterday. Adreon, Jeff, and Al kept uncovering amazing native plants and creatures as they clipped and cut away invasive vines and plants. Take a look at the individual photos to find ID's for these plants and insects. Adreon Hubbard leads this group on Wednesday afternoons at Overlook Park. If you want to join these weed warriors, please say so in a comment and we'll give your information to Adreon. Pictures: the team; achnid fly on native fleabane; native locust tree blooming with lots of bees; silky dogwood; native silver maple - all seedlings now freed from invasive vines. #invasiveplants #invasivespeciesremoval #nativeplants #pollinators #habitatrestoration #overlookpark #towson
