We had such a great time with the Kapi’olani Community College students this semester! They inventoried more than 300 trees on campus, identifying their species, taking various measurements, and putting that info on a statewide database. They also assisted with our other projects: taking care of the trees/plants on the Fort Ruger Pathway; planting native plants in the Kaimukī rain garden; and assisting in tree workshops with children. They did these activities as a service-learning project for their ecology and botany classes, enriching their learning and supporting community efforts. Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference is expanding! Pleasant Grove Middle School will be the 15th on-campus Club in the Hands4Hope Education Program. The Club will begin in August of the 24/25 school year. Hands4Hope is now accepting applications for both Club leadership as well as Club participants. Current Pleasant Grove Students who will be incoming 7th and 8th graders next school year can apply to be considered for one of the five officer positions that will lead the Club: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and PR Coordinator. All Pleasant Grove students 6th-8th grades can apply to participate in the Club. The Hands4Hope Club model uses service-learning, an approach to teaching and learning that couples academic and civic knowledge together to address genuine community needs in real time. Club participants experience a full school year of Hands4Hope's proven curriculum that positions youth as the lead decision makers, under the guidance of a Hands4Hope staff Education Program Coordinator. The Club will meet bi-monthly after school on Wednesdays for 1 hour. Irving's 2nd-grade Talent Development Group embarked on a service learning project, spearheading a collection of hygiene items for the Salvation Army. Guided by insights from a Salvation Army expert, they persuaded Mr. Z of the community's need for this service. The students diligently crafted posters, set up collection boxes, and made announcements during the designated weeks (March 25th - April 5th). In this innovative service-learning course, students had the unique opportunity to engage with the deaf community through insightful sessions with deaf sharers. They gained valuable insights into the deaf culture and explored how music is experienced in the silent world. 🫂🎶 Inspired by their interactions, the students composed and produced four original songs aimed at promoting sign language bilingualism and encouraging the deaf community to enjoy music. 🎹🎤🎵 This project exemplifies the power of music and community collaboration in fostering inclusivity and understanding. 💭 Kudos to the students for their dedication and #creativity in making a #positiveimpact through their work! 💪🏻💫✨ #servicelearning #HKBU #Music #deafcommunity #inclusion #socialimpact

“First, they will ignore you, then they will laugh at you, then they will fight you, then you will win.” This famous quote resonates so well with the eight years' journey of our unique service-learning course "I'M The Change Initiative on Sustainability & Social Responsibility" (SSR) at Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, which just completed its 7th impactful edition in 2023-24. When we started the journey in 2016-17, the only thing that was clear in my mind was the conviction that I had in the vision and mission underlying this experiential learning course. It was that conviction in the ultimate destination that got me going, even though the path forward was blurred and full of unknowns, uncertainties and unexpected twists and turns. #Sustainability, #SocialResponsibility etc were not the part and parcel of corporate lingo or management curricula in this part of the world back then to the extent they are today. #ServiceLearning also was a much less known approach in management education in India. It may also sound unbelievable if I say I developed the model and implementation framework of SSR course on my own...without having an iota of idea about any such initiatives in other management schools in India or elsewhere. But that's again a hard fact! I coined the title "I'M The Change", not only because I believed the Gandhian teaching, but more so because I thought the title may motivate our students, many of whom were in a sense of disbilef that IMTG wanted their MBA students to go to field to work with communities! Have we reached our goals with each passing year? Well, our goal was very modest. We did hope to address at least some "unmet needs" of our communities in "Bharat"- the flip side of "emerging India"- and we did achieve it in whatever little way we could, thanks to the ingenuity of our brilliant students and esteemed partners. But more importantly we were on a mission to create future business leaders who could balance profit with purpose! Have we achieved that goal? Well, that's a more difficult question...because the answer my friend is blowin in the wind...

Our newest campus upgrade is in full SWING! This enterprising group of now 5th-graders began lobbying for a swing set early in their 2022-23 school year. With encouragement from their teacher and administration, they researched and presented their findings on the benefits of swings, types of sets, costs and liability. Armed with this information, they put together a pitch for our donors. Thanks to our generous community, this student-led initiative was able to raise over $11,000 at our 2023 Benefit! Now, three days before our 2024 Benefit, the swing installation is nearly complete! [Service-Learning] Con grande piacere vi informiamo che nella mattina di martedì 4 giugno, abbiamo programmato ad Iglesias – nell’aula magna dell’ex Istituto Minerario – la giornata di condivisione del Progetto di Service-Learning, guidato dal Prof. Italo Fiorin, Presidente della Scuola di Alta Formazione EIS (Educare alla Solidarietà e all'Incontro) dell'Università LUMSA di Roma, che, a partire dal marzo del 2023, ha dato vita ad un articolato percorso di formazione, completato con lo sviluppo dei progetti di ricerca-azione nelle scuole coinvolte. Sarà un incontro pubblico, che vedrà la presenza di tutti i rappresentanti della rete, delle classi e degli insegnanti che hanno partecipato alle attività, dei partner che le hanno sostenute e di coloro che hanno sviluppato i progetti con noi. Avrà lo scopo di condividere il percorso e, allo stesso tempo, di avvicinare chi voglia conoscere l'approccio pedagogico del Service-Learning da vicino per accoglierlo nella propria scuola e comunità. Among the moments on the recent educational tours to Vietnam, this is our favorite snapshot about a popular topic - the Vietnam War. At Phap Van Temple in Ho Chi Minh City, students had the opportunity to partake in mindful walking, a practice deeply rooted in the teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Through his compassionate guidance, he established the School of Youth for Social Services in 1964, aiming to provide aid to those affected by the conflict. This perspective offers a non-violent lens through which to view the war, revealing profound insights into Vietnamese culture, history, and spirituality—a perspective often obscured without dedicated exploration.
