Spreading fleabane (Erigeron divergens) waking up to a late spring on the Colorado Front Range. Spreading fleabane's small but numerous daisy-like flowers are an excellent source of nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Its blooming period, from late spring through summer, provides a valuable food source for pollinators during this critical time. It's native to almost the entire U.S. West. The plant serves as a host for the larvae of the Fleabane Borer Moth (Papaipema cerina), a specialist insect species that relies on spreading fleabane for its caterpillars' food source. Spreading fleabane's delicate white or pale purple flowers and low-growing, drought-tolerant habit make it an attractive addition to rock gardens, wildflower meadows, or naturalized areas. Its sprawling nature also makes it a suitable ground cover option, providing seasonal interest and texture. #nativeplants #wildflowers #floraandfauna #botanicalbeauty #naturelovers #biodiversity #ecosystem #pollinators #sustainablegardening #naturalisticplanting #naturalisticgarden #naturalisticplantingdesign #nativeplants #prairiegarden #wildlifefriendlygardening #rewilding #wildscaping #wildscapes

Closeup of the flowers of blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum), a lovely perennial wildflower native to the eastern and central United States. Its striking blue-purple flowers, blooming from late summer through fall, act as a beacon for pollinators. The blue mistflower is a host plant for the larvae of several butterfly species, including the Mottled Duskywing and the Pearl Crescent. The seeds of blue mistflower are a food source for various songbirds, such as the Indigo Bunting and the Goldfinch. With its vibrant blue-purple flowers and attractive foliage, blue mistflower adds visual interest and color to the garden. It can be used as a border plant, in wildflower meadows, or as a component in naturalized areas, providing seasonal beauty. Blue mistflower is sold by @cavanosperennials and @nativeplanttrust. Getting ready for the Chelsea Flower Show this weekend and remembering The Nurture Landscapes Garden @the_rhs Chelsea Flower 2023 and just how breathtaking it was in its beauty and atmosphere. Sarah Price created quite the masterpiece with this garden, intentionally painterly, I’m sure Cedric Morris would be proud, stunned and emotional at its artistry. And I am sure that there are many many more beautiful Benton End Iris happily unfurling in gardens across the land this year as a consequence of this truly inspiring design. Wishing everyone involved with Chelsea Flower show 2024 the very best of luck and hoping we have some conditions like these so the exhibits can be shown at their very best. @sarahpricelandscapes @thenurturegroup @crocus.co.uk @localworkstudio @benton.end @gardenmuseum #rhschelsea #rhschelseaflowershow #rhs #flowershow #rhschelsea2024 #paintingwithplants #tallbeardediris #chelseaflowershow #bentonirises #bentoniris #bentonend #cedricmorris #cedricmorrisirises #gardendesign #gardenphotography #gardeninspiration #naturalisticplanting #naturalisticgarden #naturalisticplantingdesign #gardeninspo #gardenstyle #garden #gardensofinstagram #landscapedesign #landscapearchitecture #horticulture #gardenideas #gardenphotographer #richardbloomphoto

#bringingnaturehome #cammasia #cammasialeichtliniipinkstars #pinkstars #naturalisticplanting #newperannialmovement #naturalisticplantingdesign #flowers #flowersofinstagram #gardeninspiration #gardendreams #plantingdesign #designwithplants #gardening #perannialborder #gardenphotography #plantingdesign #showyflowers #lowmaintenance #winterinterest #longbloomtime #butterflyfriendly #beefriendly

Actuall impressions of our public planting at the Bachplätzchen in Düsseldorf. It's a private initiative by @platzgruen , the maintenance is done by volunteers of the neighborhood. I had the pleasure to contribute the planting plan, for which I got inspirations at the Hermannshof in Weinheim. It works quite good in its second year, such a dynamic... Pink tickseed (Coreopsis rosea) has more limited native range than its more popular yellow-petalled cousin Coreopsis lanceolata but is also an excellent source of nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects. Its bright pink flowers, blooming from late spring through early fall, act as a magnet for these important pollinators. Pink tickseed is a relatively low-maintenance plant once established. It is drought-tolerant and can thrive in various soil types, making it a versatile addition to native plant gardens, meadows, or naturalized areas. It can be used as a border plant, in rock gardens, or as a component in wildflower meadows, providing season-long beauty. It's deep taproot also helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion, making it a valuable addition to slopes or areas prone to soil erosion. Gracias @pecalles @inesssgarza y @sofia.probert Bird garden for @fyjamx. All ephemeral gardens or site-specific installations should have a theme, because they are precisely to communicate something we want people to know. This festival was a very special opportunity not only to communicate what a garden needs to have to attract birds, but to talk about landscape architecture to a different audience, the city public, in everything that that large group means. Families, older adults, children, professionals from all trades, visitors from all corners of the country, were able to closely appreciate the process, the different actors, the craftsmanship in the facilities and the collaboration between all the participating offices. Purpleheaded sneezeweed (Helenium flexuosum) produces eye-catching purple-brown flower heads atop tall stems, adding visual interest and color to the garden. Its blooming period typically lasts from late summer to early fall, providing a vibrant display during a time when many other flowers have finished blooming. The name "sneezeweed" is a bit of a misnomer for this plant species. It likely got this name because some other plant species in the genus Helenium, particularly Helenium autumnale (commonly known as sneezeweed or sneezewort), were historically used as snuff or in herbal remedies that could induce sneezing. It's an important nectar source for various pollinators, including butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects. The plant has a specialized relationship with certain invertebrates, particularly the sneezeweed flower moth (Schinia trifascia). The larvae of this moth feed exclusively on the flowers and seeds of purpleheaded sneezeweed, making it an essential host plant for this species. (Photo by dogtooth77) Purple sneezeweed is native to large portion of the eastern U.S. #nativeplants #wildflowers #floraandfauna #botanicalbeauty #naturelovers #biodiversity #ecosystem #pollinators #sustainablegardening #naturalisticplanting #naturalisticgarden #naturalisticplantingdesign #nativeplants #prairiegarden #wildlifefriendlygardening #rewilding #wildscaping #wildscapes

Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea) is a visually stunning plant, with its flat-topped clusters of bright yellow flowers that bloom in early to mid-spring. These cheerful blooms add a pop of color to the garden and complement other spring-blooming natives. The yellow umbels of Golden Alexander are highly attractive to a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and beneficial wasps. It also serves as a host plant for the Black Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio polyxenes). The caterpillars of this beautiful butterfly feed exclusively on plants in the carrot family, including Zizia aurea. This perennial plant has a tendency to self-seed and spread gradually, allowing it to naturalize in suitable areas of the garden. It is also drought-tolerant once established. An excellent choice for creating natural-looking drifts or meadow-like plantings. The front garden at De Goudbek - @degoudbek - is in its 4th season, enough time for plants like peonies and Euphoria griffithii to mature and make a statement. In the first few years the Geums and Aquilegia set the tone in May, and while they are still an important part of the season, they have become supporting actors, and some have faded away. The Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ are creating visual anchors as we had hoped with their dark leaves. This dark color is repeated in the Anthriscus ‘Ravenswing’. I think these darker tones keep the pinks and reds from being too sweet, as do the oranges. There is just something about a planting at this stage that has a depth and beauty that is balanced, especially under the watchful care and eye of an experienced gardener, as Helma is. @helmasjamaar And her expert photography captures this beautifully as well. Some pretty spectacular color courtesy of this eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) yesterday at @denverbotanic Garden. Walking through the many collections there in mid-May is a delight to the senses! As should be obvious from the photo, this deciduous tree or shrub that is native to most of the central and eastern portions of the U.S. is a true visual gem. Its stunning pink or purple flowers bloom before the leaves emerge in early spring. Its compact size and graceful branching habit make it suitable for smaller gardens, or it can be used as an understory tree in larger landscapes. The eastern redbud's early-blooming flowers are an essential nectar source for pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, providing a vital energy boost after their long winter dormancy. The tree's seed pods, which resemble flat beans, are an important food source for various songbirds, squirrels, and other small mammals. #nativeplants #wildflowers #floraandfauna #botanicalbeauty #naturelovers #biodiversity #ecosystem #pollinators #sustainablegardening #naturalisticplanting #naturalisticgarden #naturalisticplantingdesign #nativeplants #prairiegarden #wildlifefriendlygardening #rewilding #wildscaping #wildscapes

Hairy wood mint (Blephilia hirsuta) is a perennial wildflower with hairy stems and leaves, and produces showy clusters of tubular, lavender-pink flowers in mid-to-late summer. The fragrant flowers of hairy wood mint are highly attractive to a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, moths, and various other beneficial insects. Its late-summer blooming period provides an important nectar source when many other plants have finished flowering. The Mint Moth (Pyrausta orphisalis) is a specialist species that feeds exclusively on members of the mint family, including hairy wood mint. Herb of Grace (Bacopa monnieri) is a low-growing, creeping perennial with small, fleshy leaves and delicate white or purple flowers. Its spreading habit and ability to form dense mats make it an attractive groundcover choice for moist areas or near water features. Certain leaf-mining flies, such as the genus Calycomyza, have developed specialized relationships with Herb of Grace, using the plant's leaves as a food source and shelter for their larvae. Som mayflies and caddisflies use the stems and leaves of Herb of Grace as construction materials for their protective cases or habitats. Bearberry or kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ) is a low-growing, evergreen shrub with clusters of white or pinkish-white bell-shaped flowers in spring, followed by red berries in the fall. Its dense, mat-forming growth habit makes it an excellent groundcover choice. It's also native to many areas of the U.S., including almost all northern ecoregions as well as all of the Rockies down to west Texas and the plains of both coasts. Kinnikinnick's berries are an important food source for various birds, including grouse, quail, and robins, as well as small mammals like chipmunks and squirrels. Kinnikinnick is well-suited for rock gardens, xeriscapes, or low-maintenance landscapes, as it is drought-tolerant and requires little maintenance once established. It can be used as a groundcover or to create a living mulch around trees or shrubs, suppressing weeds and retaining moisture in the soil. #kwekerijingoedeaarde #naturalisticplantingdesign #salvialovers

Nodding onion (Allium cernuum) is a visually striking wildflower with drooping umbels of small, bell-shaped pink or white flowers. It's native to a large portion of the United States and Canada. The plant's unique nodding habit and airy appearance make it a charming addition to meadows, prairies, or naturalized garden areas. The nodding onion's flowers are highly attractive to a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, moths, and various flies. Its prolonged blooming period from late spring to early summer ensures a consistent nectar and pollen source for these important insects. Nodding onion is a larval host plant for certain butterfly and moth species, including the Satyr Anglewing (Polygonia satyrus) and the Celery Looper Moth (Anagrapha falcifera), supporting their life cycles. Nodding onion is well-suited for prairie or meadow gardens, where it can be planted in drifts or clusters, creating a naturalized and low-maintenance display. Gardeners can use nodding onion as a border plant or as an accent in mixed perennial beds as well. The plant's drought tolerance and adaptability make it a great choice for xeriscape or low-water gardens.
