Wow! It's amazing what 25 middle schoolers and a handful of garden savvy chaperones can accomplish in just a couple of hours! We were so thrilled to work with Tzedek America (@tzedekamerica) to host another great group of young volunteers in the Edendale Grove Garden and Orchard. We were able to prune our Olive and Mulberry trees, compost all the branches and garden clippings, clear weeds and spread a ton of mulch. Month 5 Worth The Wait. I always wanted window boxes. They can add instant charm and curb appeal. In our first house it was my plan to add window boxes to the front of the house. I could see a cute little cottage in my future. We only lived there 2 years, during that time our daughter was born and it just never happened. After living in this house for 30 years I changed directions and worked with the Mister to create a garden shelf instead of a window box. Definitely one of the simplest and best changes to our backyard. This shelf gives me space to add seasonal fun and enjoy the scene from inside and out. It’s a great spot for plants that need a bit of shade from the hottest parts of the day. I have also cleared it off for a beverage station during backyard bbq’s. Having a garden shelf instead of a window box has worked well for me. Before you grab the Raid, it is important to know that the Blue-winged wasp is your friend. This solitary wasp is concerned about having babies and surviving. It does not want to pick a fight with a human since it is only one, unlike the colony wasps. The Blue-winged wasp serves a purpose in the garden. It pollinates plants as it's looking for nectar, and it controls the June Bug and Japanese Beetle population by paralyzing the grubs and laying one egg on each one. The babies hatch and feed on the grub and will emerge the following season as an adult wasp. She might sting many grubs and decide not to lay eggs on them. Other solitary wasps serve similar functions. One mud dauber paralyzes spiders for its young, including the black widow. Only the females have stingers but will only be used if a human or predator tries hurting her. Males will swarm over lawns seasonally, but they are not harmful to humans. They sleep curled up around a twig or stem.
