05.13.24 It's one of my favorite times of the year! I can make Sun Tea with fresh mint from the garden. I simply add a few decaf tea bags, freshly picked, washed and slightly crushed mint and water. Place it in a sunny spot, and let it brew. If you've been following me, you know I love growing herbs and cooking with them. Mint is easy to grow, but can become invasive. My son buried sheets of metal 12 inches into the ground surrounding my mint bed, and those mint roots find their way around them.🤣. So I'm always trimming it and looking for ways to use it. A few times over the season I will cut it way back, and then dry it for hot tea in the winter. But I will use it fresh in: ✳️Sun Tea ✳️Mojitos ✳️Tabbouleh ✳️Tzatziki ✳️Raita ✳️Chutney ✳️Compound Butter ✳️Dressings and Marinades ✳️Add it to water for flavor What is your favorite way to use mint? When I set the greenhouse waterbutts up I made two errors. One not level resulting in the demise of one when it fell over and two not having enough room underneath for the watering can to fit. I’ve taken advantage of the recent hot weather to use the water in these first and taken them down dug down changed the weed matting and put some slabs in and levelled up properly. Garlic scapes appeared overnight in the bed where I THOUGHT I’d planted the softneck garlic. Nope, opposite bed. I trust my memory too much. I love starting spring with an already-lush, producing garden from fall’s planting, and winter’s neglect. Producing now are rosemary, thyme, oregano, strawberries and kale. Peas are wrapping up. Garlic is a couple of weeks away from harvest. Parsley is starting over from where I cut it back. A few carrots are popping up. I planted my radishes too late yet again, but I let them bolt (see Tip No. 3 in my TIPS highlights). The pods are edible when green and taste like radishes. And the seeds are easy to save. I’m sitting here watching an ARMY of ladybugs 🐞 patrolling my raised beds. It’s occurring to me that I did two things differently this year that I think have allowed the ladybugs to thrive: 1. I had FULL beds all winter. Which meant there were places for them to overwinter, and bugs for them to eat as soon as they emerged. I harvested a bunch of cutting celery last week and had to keep sending Siena outside to return ladybug larvae to the garden that I found on the cut stems I was washing. 2. We blew a lot of leaves into the beds around the garden last fall, and left them whole as mulch all winter. I waited until I started seeing bugs emerge before I added the layer of pine needles. All kinds of beneficial insects overwinter in leaves…so if you are bagging or shredding leaves, you’re effectively removing the helpful bugs from your ecosystem. You can’t tell from the photos, but I’ve already planted tomatoes, peppers, edamame, delicata, basil, nasturtiums and more. The garlic will be harvested soon, and then summer’s garden will take over. I love this stage of spring 🌸
Bell peppers are now transplanted in big pots and placed in the greenhouse. Most of them are already having flowers, and I can see first tiny peppers, too. I sowed in January the seeds just to be sure that the plants are going to be big and strong until mid of May. May: I finally had the time, and the ground was dry enough for me to plant out some of my plant starts. I got all my summer squash and cucumbers planted. The squash plants are along the fence and up around the bed in the middle that is covered in straw. In the big middle bed, I planted sunflowers on the north side and zinnias and carnations on the south side (north is the left of the picture). I also got half my cantaloupe starts planted out (not pictured). I do not intend to till or viciously weed where the cucumbers, melons, and pumpkins will be growing. I will keep the grass short until the vining plants grow enough to smother out most of the grass. I hate leaving soil uncovered, it looks sad and desolate. I also got three more pumpkin starts planted out. Quite a few of the recipes I revisit every Spring include eating the veggies flowers. For example, these chive blossoms are always the first flower from our alliums in the garden but we eat them all. Some as tempura fried snacks and some as roasted scapes like a side dish. But there are many blossoms and blooms you can devour without lessening the harvest of full grown veggies. Snacking on early season treats just means you’re utilizing more of the plant and it gives you a much needed taste of what’s to come. 【📝SDGsから考える憲法記念日🪴】 皆さん、こんばんは😃。 今日から明後日の3日間は、5月の連休からちょうど10日経過しましたので、今日は「憲法記念日」、明日は「みどりの日」、明後日は「こどもの日」について、時期的に遅くなりましたが、SDGs（持続可能な開発目標）と関連づけて説明させていただきます🎌。 先ず第一に、SDGsには、17の国際目標の下に、169の達成基準と232の指標が明記されています🇺🇳。日本国憲法には、11の章の下に、103の条文が明記されています📜。読み飽きるほど多く明記されており、全てを理解することは大変難しいですので、以下、「東京弁護士会」の中の「憲法問題対策センター」のHPを参考とさせていただきます⚖️。 日本国憲法は前文第2項において 、「われらは、平和を維持し、専制と隷従、圧迫と偏狭を地上から永遠に除去しようと努めてゐる国際社会において、名誉ある地位を占めたいと思ふ。われらは、全世界の国民が、ひとしく恐怖と欠乏から免かれ、平和のうちに生存する権利を有することを確認する」 と宣言しています📜。 本文の中の「われら」とは、日本国民を意味しております🗾。この趣旨は、まさに人類を貧困や欠乏から解き放ち、地球を癒し安全にするというSDGsの理念と合致しております✨。 SDGsは「誰一人取り残さない」ことを謳っています🙏。「誰一人取り残さない」とは、厳密には最も弱い立場にある人々の最も重要な権利が守られるべきということであります。 日本国憲法は、第13条で「すべて国民は、個人として尊重され」、生命・自由・幸福追求の権利は「最大の尊重を必要とする」として、人が人として有する権利を基本的人権として保障しており、「誰一人取り残さない」SDGsの理念を体現しているとも解釈されます🧑⚖️。他にも日本国憲法は、第14条で法の下の平等を保障し、第25条で「すべて国民は、健康で文化的な最低限度の生活を営む権利を有する」、いわゆる生存権を保障し、第26条で教育を受ける権利を、第27条で勤労の権利を、第32条で裁判を受ける権利を、主にそれぞれ保障しています🧑⚖️。いずれも、SDGsの17の目標と深く関係していますね～🇺🇳。 よくよく考えますと、SDGsは第二次世界大戦の反省から70年数年前に制定された日本国憲法の理念を身近にさせているように思います❗SDGsは、2015年に開催された国連持続可能な開発サミットにおいて、世界を変革するため「持続可能な開発のための2030アジェンダ」が採択されました🌎。その中で、2030年までに国連加盟国が達成しなければならない国際目標がSDGsなのです🇺🇳。ですから、最近、海外で発案されて日本にも導入された理念だと思っている方々が殆どだと思いますが、その理念は戦後まもない日本で憲法で明確に宣言されていたのです🇯🇵。 最近は、個人も企業も、SDGsの理念を自身の身近な生活や事業活動に活かしていく取り組みが盛んになっています🌈。SDGsの取り組みをより深めていくために、日本国憲法の条文を紐解いてみるのもよいでしょう📚。 《🤳今日の写真🌿》 2枚の写真を掲載いたします。4月22日（月）に撮影しました。 写真1/2は、ラディッシュの芽でトキタ種苗さんの品種「ピッコリーノ」です🍒。4月16日（火）に播種し、4月22日（月）頃に発芽しました🌱。 写真2/2は、そのラディッシュの品種「ピッコリーノ」の畝です。手前側に植えてある3本の茎は、屋内で水耕栽培していたニンニクを移植して育てています🧄。 #ラディッシュ #radish #アブラナ科 #brassicaceae #イタリア野菜 #gustoitalia #根菜 #rootvegetables #無農薬 #organic #有機栽培 #organiccultivation #再利用 #recycle #農福連携 #socialfarming #青森県産 #aomoriprefecture #八戸産 #hachinohe #持続可能な開発目標 #SDGs #循環型農業 #circularagriculture #家庭菜園 #kitchengarden #トキタ種苗 #tokitaseed #笑顔と感謝 #Grazie

Erysimum cheiri, the annual English wallflower, and the perennial cultivar ‘Bowles Mauve’ are the best-known wallflowers. Wallflowers grow best as perennials in cool, humid regions. In very hot summer regions, they are best grown as spring-blooming annuals. Set container-grown plants in the garden in spring; harden off plants for several days in the shade before setting them out in full sun. Sow seeds in spring or in late summer where winter temperatures do not drop below 20°F (-6.7°C). Wallflowers can be grown as an annual in all zones; grown as a perennial in Zones 7 to 10 where summers are not too hot.
