🎶It's time to say goodbye🎶 Well, that's a bit dramatic...... I've finally cleared all of the remaining broad beans by cutting them down to soil level... In January at a local garden market they sold of bags of tulips for 1-2 euros and ofcourse we took a whole bunch, they still developed and giving some crazy colors. Selten hatte ich so viele Reaktionen auf eine story wie letzten Dienstag auf das kurze video über mein Beet mit den #ranunkeln . Da dort die Kommentare nicht allen zugänglich sind, wollte ich noch ein paar Worte dazu verlieren. Nein, es war ganz und gar nicht aufwendig mit den Ranunkeln! Ich habe es nur zum ersten Mal gemacht und dann ist alles so aufregend, von der ersten Knospe bis zum Blütenmeer. Dafür, dass sie lachsfarben sein sollten, leuchten die “Salmon” weithin feuerfarben und stehlen den violetten und pastellfarbenen gerade eindeutig die show. Was für eine Fülle! Und da ich mit Dahlien angefangen habe zu gärtnern, bin ich absolut begeistert über ihre unfassbar gute Haltbarkeit in der Vase, bis zu zwei Wochen stehen sie bei mir. Ich möchte das auf jeden Fall wiederholen - allerdings mit einigen Veränderungen. 🌱 größerer Pflanzabstand - ich hatte nur eine Handbreit, also ca. 15cm und das ist nicht luftig genug für Ranunkeln ☀️ ein frühlingssonniges Beet (die Lichtverhältnisse sind bei uns sehr unterschiedlich im Verlauf der Jahreszeiten) ♻️ Für mich eignen sich Ranunkeln nicht im Wechsel mit Dahlien und sie werden deshalb ihr eigenes Beet bekommen. Meine Dahlienknollen hatte ich bisher immer Mitte bis Ende April gepflanzt und mein Winterquartier ist im Frühling zu warm, um sie bis zum Ende der Blüte der Ranunkeln warten zu lassen. 🌸 Ausschlaggebend für die Blüte ist auf jeden Fall die Qualität der Krallen. Da unser Boden sehr sandig ist und dort Nährstoffe schnell verrieseln, habe ich im Frühling ein paar Mal mit einem Pflanzenstärkungsmittel gegossen. Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass allein die Zugabe von Kompost in der Beetvorbereitung nicht zu dieser üppigen Blüte geführt hätte. Um unseren kargen Boden weiter zu verbessern, würde ich dort am liebsten Gründünger aussäen, wenn die Ranunkeln verblüht sind, aber leider warten hier sehr viele Dahliensämlinge auf einen Platz. 🐌 Bei mir interessieren sich die Schnecken nicht für die Ranunkeln, obwohl ich etliche im angrenzenden Anemonenbeet und bei den Narzissen entdecke. . . . . #growyourownflowers #schnittblumengarten #🔴📷

The water storage IBC container acting as a handy place for hanging pots of strawberries. Strawberries in pots acting as a handy disguise for the ugly IBC container…(with broad bean jungle in background). . We don’t have any water at our allotments, but I’ve found that I’m actually ok with that. It’s made me much more aware of the amount of water I use and also what is really needed. Having the IBC container was a game changer, it now means that I collect enough water over winter to last the summer (I also have two smaller water buts) so there’s no need to carry heavy containers of water up to the plot. Looks like any water I used this week will be topped up by the forecast next week, but for now I’m going to enjoy the last of this spurt of warm and sunny days. 🔥Basket of Fire🔥 These are doing surprisingly well considering I had to replant all my seedlings at the start of the season due to my own incompetence...... Basically I cooked my seedlings by leaving them under my new grow light that was placed entirely way too close..... I even melted a few of my cloches.... So bonus points for that one... I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with these, as the name suggests I think they are going to be a wee bit on the spicy side..... I might sweet pickle them and make them into shelf stable sauce! Found this lovey old cabinet outside a house next to the allotments (and confirmed it was going for free)! It took me and my bf aaaaages to move it; it's very heavy which I take to mean its very good quality! I thought it'll be perfect for the chickens; offering shade in the summer, shelter in the rain and cold, and perching opportunities. I'm also hoping to use the drawers for dust baths but I've only been able to get one out! The other two are totally jammed! This year I grew 2 varieties of yellow Courgette, Soleil and Atena. The Soleil have flourished and produced bumper crops.... The Atena, have produced almost nothing. With a large majority of plants only producing male flower and very very few female flowers. I understand that the make flowers are also super tasty but they aren't something I can use and preserve for enjoying over the winter.... Shhhh 🤫 The fairies have moved in next to the pond, I don't want to frighten them off 🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚 Love my silliness 😂 it's one of my favourite traits about myself, but it's taken my entire adulthood to embrace it. Took the bf and I about 8 hours to build this poultry cage at the weekend! The instructions were not the best and we had to redo some bits. It had a strange door hatch that unfortunately no longer fit after putting the chicken wire on. So I got a chain with carabiners either end to make it more secure. It definitely won't be storm-proof on its own so I came back a couple days later and sunk the bottom of it into the ground and will hammer in some stakes and attach them to the frame for more support. #chickenrun #poultrycage #allotmentchickens #allotmentdiary #ontheplot #myallotment

The potatoes are up! After 40+ years of growing, I still get excited at the first sight of potatoes pushing through the soil! The fresh green growth always fills me with anticipation of a new summer growing season and the abundance of produce that comes with it. It’s a sign that spring is well underway and everything is growing rapidly! It’s also a warning that I have a new responsibility and need to be on guard for any late spring frosts. Potato plants are tender and need to be protected from cold weather. I still have two weeks of potential frosts so I’ll be watching the weather forecast like a hawk! Two months and I’ll be digging the first new potatoes - I can’t wait! This year I grew 2 varieties of yellow Courgette, Soleil and Atena. The Soleil have flourished and produced bumper crops.... The Atena, have produced almost nothing. With a large majority of plants only producing male flower and very very few female flowers. I understand that the make flowers are also super tasty but they aren't something I can use and preserve for enjoying over the winter....
