I was working away last week..... My phone rang early on Tuesday morning, and the somewhat gruff voice on the other end wanted to know did I want any free logs? ...Rewind to few years ago: I signed up to a website to be a 'tip site' for tree surgeons who need to offload chip and logs. Every few months or so, I get a truckload of woodchip, but last week was the first offer of some logs. I said an enthusiastic yes, passed over my address, and gave instructions on where to deposit the logs. Fast forward then to Saturday morning. I hadn't noticed the pile when I arrived home in the early hours, but upon pulling back the curtains, I'm fairly sure I let out an audible gasp at the pile. There must be at least three years' worth of wood there, which is amazing. Our old cottage is on oil, so we strive to use the woodburners where we can until the plans for solar panels and a ground source heat pump come to fruition. 🧅🧅🧅 for all the internet meanies out there who hated on my reel about replanting onions that had sprouted in my pantry- this onion bulb and greens harvest is all from one Vidalia onion from my pantry that had gone bad (I just planted this one whole and didn't separate the individual bulblets). I probably could have left it to grow a little more but I accidentally cut a bulb when I was harvesting the fava beans so decided to pull it out and use it for recipes this week! Gardening is supposed to be fun- experiment and see what happens! I also picked all of my fava/broad beans 🫘 and then pulled the plants to make room for pole beans. I love seeing mushrooms in the no-dig gardens. We're seeing more & more every spring, which is a good sign that things are going well underneath the surface of our soil. Mushrooms are the fruit of a larger underground fungal system that is very beneficial to the garden. When left undisturbed, as in a no-dig garden, the fungal mycelia will help break down organic matter, making nutrients available to your plants. Mushrooms will emerge after long periods of wet, humid weather, like we've had this spring. But even after the weather dries up, the delicate fungal network is doing its magic underground. When we till the ground, it breaks up this network of mycelium, which will have a long-term effect on the soil structure & even the health of our plants. Moving to a no-dig gardening system allows the soil to heal & mycelium to grow unmolested, allowing our plants to develop healthier roots & giving better access to the nutrients in the soil.

The previous people who lived here planted irises everywhere. I didn't know what they were at first when I dug up the bulbs or tubers or whatever they're called. They looked like fat carrots. Our first spring, we got a surprise when the toss away pile started to bloom. I then started to guard them against the mower and weedeater, and the reward is giant mounds like this. We have several colors of iris, but this is the biggest collection of the white and purple. Another #allotmentday to get my brassicas in the ground! They’ve been hardening off for a few days now. I’ve planted purple sprouting broccoli to enjoy next year, savoy cabbage, curly kale and sprouts with some marigolds thrown in to keep the pests at bay. To net them I had to brave the rat shed. That yucca in the back once belonged to my second mom. When she died, I dug it up and put it in this raised bed that we called the memorial garden. When I dug a hole for that post, I hit a black plastic bag and something that did not sound like rocks. The usually rude old lady who lived next door at that time came over to tell me that the previous people here buried their small dogs under those trees. I accidentally chose a pet cemetery for a memorial garden. You'll notice that post is actually in a cinder block. I didn't want to keep digging... But anyway, we stuck in asiatic tiger lilies of several colors, a rose of Sharon, some mums (that didn't make it past two winters). Planting at speed today to get a few things in the ground while I have time - broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, runner beans, dwarf/bush beans, beetroot, tomatoes, and ground cherries (or Cape gooseberries or Inca berries depending on who you ask), plus made a netting tunnel for the brassicas and a teepee for the beans. The Lackey moth caterpillar. I found quite a few of these on my apple tree, but not on any other trees. They can damage and take over your tree, destroying the foliage, so it is best to remove them . You can scrape them off into a bucket or use a bug spray. Be carful as they are a hairy caterpillar, and you can have a skin reaction if you come into contact with the hairs.
rain is expected all day so just checking on the plants. the deer seem to like the leaves of only the Norland red potatoes, but none of the others... I can't blame them, those are my favorites too 😂making a note to plant them in the middle of the bed or cage them next year though. I planted all of the potatoes on March 30th and I planted a lot as we go through them pretty quickly at our house and hoping to have some to store for winter this year. Green Beans are powerhouses in your veggie garden. They produce quickly, and a lot. (From about 20 plants, I’m picking this amount every two days). They freeze well, packed with nutrients (especially vitamin C) , and they IMPROVE your soil by adding nitrogen. (Compost for the best amount of nitrogen!). I rotate beans around my garden each year so they are improving the soil wherever they go. Last year I planted too many and we grew tired of them. I scaled back this year so we don’t feel overwhelmed. I added some runner beans to the mix too and can’t wait for them to start really producing. We’re also seeing the sweet peas going crazy right now, but those early spring crops are about finished. Green Beans will produce all summer long if we let them! Beans. When started Sundance Harvest I heard a lot about the struggle that is first year farmers markets in a local food saturated city. So instead, I said "What's the gaps?" and I started my first farmers market season in the dead of winter. I could do this as I had heated greenhouses. My reasoning was I couldn't compete with established farmers market vendors in the main season and I wasn't skilled enough to offer out of this world extra straight rainbow carrots. So I found my niche. And I kept doing it until that $4K a month space cost got to early 20s Cheyenne! If I were to go back, I would do this again-sorta. It allowed me to establish a brand, build a strong customer base and see what people wanted. I would sell out of greens in the winter if I was one of very few vendors. For new farmers, the act of growing food isn't the hard part to get right - I believe. It's the marketing. There's so many books, courses and influencers that can teach you how to grow osungold cherry tomatoes on a lower and lean system - but very few wil tell you how to market. There's the same old "connect through flyers,word of mouth etc". But what they are missing is that marketing is so subjective to your community and its needs. - I am grateful I didn't have a hard time selling my crops- I do think finding my niche in the winter greens allowed me to really get my name out there. But what if I didn't have heated greenhouses? I would have focused on marketing before farming. This could look like instead of growing 40 different crops for a CSA (which is hell your first year tbh as you have so many loss leaders in there like onions...). I would suggest only growing crops that are more profitable and higher yielding. This could be cherry tomatoes, salanova head lettuce, quick greens, bell peppers etc. I would then suggest marketing these few crops very well. To fill in the gaps of your neighbouring CSA farmer offerings in the cooler months when your winter greens would be in high demand for example. Or even moving your heirlooms through a local food hub. Doing a few crops really well can help you build your brand, farm and confidence. More on next post coming…

This tiny cage is keeping the #gardenpests away! The chipmunks surprisingly we're eating this #mullein plant. It's young and that is when most vulnerable to chippies. Oh I get so annoyed. They don't normally go after Mullein. I decided to keep one plant this year in my garden. This one was wild foraged. The pot next to it just happens to have tiny #motherwort seedlings That reseeded from last year. The wind blew and there they are. Along with some yellow sorrel. Also from last year. I'm prepping these pots to have some vegetables in them so I will relocate any herbs to some Long garden boxes.
