All the different daffodils currently blooming 💛 Lately tulips have been the center of attention over the last few weeks. But I would be remiss if I did not highlight these beauties. Some unknown varieties others very fragrant and great for naturalizing like ‘Sir Winston Churchill’, ‘Charm Offensive’, ‘Oh Pairs’ and ‘Flower Parade’. I do love tulips, but daffodils also hold a soft spot in my heart. This time of year I meander around the gardens and take note of where I should add daffodils this fall and take a mental tally for when I order my fall bulbs. Welcome to our new Flower Farm plot for the 2024 season!! We’ve relocated to a bigger plot within @newburychristmastree farm & we’ve got the bonus of a polytunnel for the first time! With the amazing help of Jeff & James at NCTF the polytunnel has been moved into place; & the ground has been dug over, stumps removed & rotorvated / tilled. And it’s look fab & getting closer to being ready for action!! Today was all about getting the polytunnel ready for use. Thank you to friends that donated cardboard to the cause! The cardboard has been used as base to cover the ground & any unwanted residual plants already there. This has then been covered with landscape / weed suppressant fabric. And it’s now good to go! Here we are at day 7 of germination. It is morning time around 0800 and the cilantro is starting to clearly bust out the sides! NOW it’s time to take the pavers off! Give them a lil peek 👀 if you want but best thing to do is take the paver off and WALK AWAY! I will revisit them in the evening and check progress. I like leaving them stacked with no paver for a couple reasons.. 1. It helps knock off seed hulls but on cilantro the seed hulls are actually pretty tasty and give it texture with a lil crunch. My customers enjoy them and so do some chefs. But I do always go for a cleaner grow out with lil to no seed hulls as a goal. 2. Keeping them stacked helps ensure a solid germination throughout all the trays. The life and losses of market gardening! 🌱 The appearance of spring (finally) this week has been very welcome and has given us renewed hope for the season ahead. It’s not been the greatest of starts. The extremely wet winter into spring, followed by a late cold snap, hasn’t been good news for our Market Garden. After sowing and planting the first of our seedlings, the cold weather meant we lost all of our cabbage crops, killing them off entirely. So this has put us behind with the first harvest for this season, whilst we run behind our original sowing and planting schedule. A little annoying, but that’s the life we lead out in the fields! So let’s hope the weather plays along for the rest of the season. Unlikely, but we can always hope... 😂
