The tomatoes are finally all out in the polytunnel. Good timing too because some were almost too big to fit in the car boot 😂 my first go at growing tomatoes from seed and by myself. Last time was when I was a kid and we grew them at my home in North Wales. Started building a new composter today which we are going to add planters on top and a surprise round the sides, also built a trellis for the runner beans to run up and continued turning the soil to flatten the land for baby girls area 🤩💚🌿 !!

This is mainly for my records and a before picture of my poly tunnels planting for this summer. So far we’ve got five varieties of tomatoes, six if you include the tumbling toms in the hanging baskets. Two cucumber varieties that I’ve not grown before, two cantaloupe melons plants from saved seed and three different varieties of red peppers. I still haven’t planted my main crop spuds that are in the trug and I’ve got several cabbages and odds and sods in pots I haven’t found a space for. I’ve decided to do all my aubergines outside this year to give me more space in the tunnel. I’m a little bit concerned though as the temperature had already got up to 41C yesterday morning when I went to open the doors at 10am. We took our last big harvest of Winter Salad from the Polytunnel this week as I cleared the plants to make room for Summer crops (scroll for before and after pics). I planted Tomatoes and Marigolds where the salads had been, leaving a few plants in place to save seed from. Relay cropping like this makes the VERY BEST use of this valuable space and with No-Dig the change over is about as quick as it gets, as we had added the annual mulch of compost in October before the salads went in 🙌 I don't know how many Kilograms of salad we have taken out of this space between our first harvest in November until now - I know that it has been a LOT ... I will weigh it all one year! So I think I counted about 50+ various types of Tom seedlings I’d got going. I’ve just planted up 24 plants into their position for the year then my neighbour says do I want these 🤩 If all my tom plants do well I’m going to be well chuffed. Loads and loads of progress at the plot today. I was ‘WFP’ 😆. I actually did two meetings from the shed 🤭. Meanwhile lots of work happened and I gardened in my breaks. The polytunnel is looking great. Tomatoes have put on so much growth. We have flowers and side shoots to pinch out! I planted some marigolds to help keep the pests at bay. Outside the polytunnel the paths were weeded and woodchipped. Raised beds were also weeded. I admitted defeat on the peas. I bought two strips of sugar snap seedlings from the garden centre and planted them. It just hasn’t been the right sort of spring for my peas 🫛. I planted out my baby chard plants too. They are very small but I hope the strulch will keep them safe from slugs and snails. 🐌 In the fruit cage I picked off a load more caterpillars from the currants. I also planted two new blueberry bushes and weeded the hell out of the place!🫐 What else? Well, a new path was laid and lots of other tidying and stuff. It all looked pretty damn good by the time we left! The extras for the irrigation arrived at home today so we’ll be back in a few days to get more drippers installed too. Ok, bye 👋🏻

We’ve been very behind on everything, trying to sort out inefficiencies, getting summer setups for animals ready, getting the garden going, and an endless list of other tasks. All the while realizing our mistakes and flaws in our systems and setups from starting out this past year and making many more mistakes along the way but even through all this we have been able to set a new record for ourselves! We planted 11 strawberry plants last spring and from runners from those original plants we potted up at least 11 more in the fall. A few of those potted up plants got planted in the polytunnel as a trial and as a result we were able to pick our first strawberry on May 7, which is coincidentally the last frost date for our growing zone! This is also over a month earlier than our first harvest last year. At last! It feels like such a relief now we are into May. I dont know about you, but it has felt like an endlessly dull wet winter and spring has been so cold that it felt as though everything in the garden had pressed pause. Then suddenly the weather has warmed and the sun has reappeared and everything is exploding into life again. A gentle green fuzz has settled over the land and the stark bare outlines of trees are disappearing beneath a delight of green foliage. At last, we are able to plant things out. My windowsills have been overwhelmed with tender plants, and my greenhouse was bursting at the seams. So today Im.planting the tomatoes in the greenhouse and polytunnel. I have lost plants before to late frosts, up here on the moors, so it does always feel like a bit of a risk. One that I'm willing to take, but I may hold a few plants back, just in case. My pumpkin and squash plants have just germinated, and I will now sow some french and runner beans, as I have room to grow them on. Since January a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes and our cut flowers are starting to arrive! The ranunculus are gathering pace in the polytunnel, the peonies are in bud and have withstood the recent downpours of rain. The scented pelargoniums are growing fast in the polytunnel but the tender annuals in the greenhouse still have some growing left to do. Finally, the cutting garden is starting to come to life with clematis, geums, astilbe, verbascum and aquilegias and the direct sown annuals have benefitted from recent intervals of sunshine followed by rain. Roll on June, July and August when everything will be at its best in the cutting garden.
Saturday sweat fest finishing the tunnel. The cardboard was starting to curl and the dogs kept ripping chunks off it to eat, so we laid bags of compost to try and stop the curl. The other bed is done! Wooooo, bank holiday weather played very nicely and my tomatoes are all planted. I’ve popped some in the poly and some are in pots (in the poly for now) waiting to come home later this month. The ones in the pic are #muchomiel from the lovely Sam @happy_place_gardener for her #icangrowaplumpone grow along and have been the best germinators and growers out of all the ones I’ve grown this year - hopefully they’ll have a fantastic yield too 🤞🏼 I’ve also planted Barry’s crazy cherry, Alice’s dream, tigerella and constoluto fiorentina. I’ve wrapped their roots in string and then tied the other end to the polytunnel frame to give them some support. I’ll just wind the plants round the strings as they grow. I’ll pin a reel showing how I do this in case you haven’t seen it before. It actually felt like summer today and it was bliss. I’m so pleased to be catching up a bit. My back has definitely had enough weeding now though. Lunch was good today! A delicious tuna mayo roll with the mixed leaves - the first produce from the polytunnel! Oh gee what a difference to the coop bagged salad leaves 🤮! They are cut and come again so hopefully lots of tasty, fresh as you can get lunches to come.

Some of the baby fruit forming on the fruit trees. Inevitably we’ll lose loads as these trees are very small and young. But each year it gets better and now they’ve been able to really get some roots down, I’m hopeful of some fruits. 🍎🍏🍒🍐. Final picture is the currants which are heavily laden this year.
