Back at home we decided to section off two new camps, one for roosters which will turn into a lucerne field for next season's roosters and one for our goats and our Orpington and Brahma breeding stock. Today the goats are enjoying a day of joy in there. We'll build the coop in the next month or two so we can further seperate our chicken breeds. This land was hard clay and largely bare some months back so it's pretty amazing to see it flourishing with very little work. We simply cut down the weeds and bushes, added old horse manure and soiled hay, and then tossed some grass seed when the big rains came. This was so inspirational we have put up droppers and electric tape to start on the next section and on we will go although we will certainly have to pause for a while over winter. I'm writing a memoir about an important time in my life. I'm also working daily in my own garden in regional Victoria. Because of both, I've started revisiting the journals and publications my parents, brother and I created in the years 1976 to 1982. . In 1976, Mum and Dad 'opted out' of society and went bush - taking my 10 year old brother and me (12) with them. They took us out of school, before home-schooling was a legal option, and gave us an amazing gift of self-reliance along with practical skills and hands-on experience in problem solving. . It was not all joy and love and learning. There was darkness there, too. The memoir is my way of sorting through that for myself. But in revisiting that time in my life it's been a revelation to re-read the past issues of the magazine 'Gone Bush' and information pamphlets we published monthly along with Mum's faithfully recorded observations of our journey from suburbia to self-sufficiency. . Deze kleine mijten hebben een grote Mestkever te pakken. Het lijkt dat deze parasieten hem aanvallen maar ze kunnen de grote Mestkever ook gebruiken als vervoermiddel naar nieuw voedsel. Dit zullen mijten kúnnen zijn van de Oranje Aaskever die ik ook steeds vaker tref in de tuin. En die komen op hun buurt weer af op de koeienstront, inktviszwam, stinkzwammen en Pawpaw die wordt bestoven door deze aaskever. A Country Running From My Antonia, 1918 The road from the post-office came directly by our door, crossed the farmyard, and curved round this little pond, beyond which it began to climb the gentle swell of unbroken prairie to the west. There, along the western sky-line it skirted a great cornfield, much larger than any field I had ever seen. The cornfield, and the sorghum patch behind the barn, were the only broken land in sight. Everywhere, as far as the eye could reach, there was nothing but rough, shaggy, red grass, most of it as tall as I. North of the house, inside the ploughed fire-breaks, grew a thick-set strip of box-elder trees, low and bushy, their leaves already turning yellow. This hedge was nearly a quarter of a mile long, but I had to look very hard to see it at all. The little trees were insignificant against the grass. It seemed as if the grass were about to run over them, and over the plum-patch behind the sod chicken-house. As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the color of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. Never a dull moment when you live on a farm. My mom came to visit this past week and on the first day she was here, our neighbors horse got out and was in our backyard. My mom, being the best, said “Get me your cows harness and lead rope and I can bring him back.” I said “well, I can get you his.” A little uncertain because my mom has not worked with horses in many many years, but I trusted her confidence. So I walked over to our neighbors, got his harness lead rope and brought it over to my mom. She grew up roaming the desert on horses with cowboys for hours on end. So this was nothing for her. She grabbed the harness, put it on him and lead him all the way back. My mom is a city girl, but country girl at heart. She amazes me and I love having her here. OUR FIRST HOMEGROWN MEAT . 7 months ago when we brought this property, this is exactly what we had in mind! Ensuring we had plenty of space to grow and raise our own food! . Today we processed half of our meat chickens; exactly 22kgs of meat. We estimate the cost of raising these chooks be about $8.25/kg, cheaper than what we pay at our local supermarket. For us though, it isn't just about the cost. We know what these chickens have eaten, where they have lived and how they have been raised. 🌱 HERITAGE TREE - PRINCESS TREE Philadelphia has been known as the Greene Country Towne since its beginning in 1682. We have over 9,000 acres of parkland, much of which is woodland.  Everywhere I go, I find examples of “Heritage” trees.  These are trees that have lived to at least 100 years, have a width greater than 2’ at chest height, or have cultural significance. The signature tree in the park next to my house is a Princess Tree or Empress Tree (Paulownia tomentosa). This tree can be highly invasive and should never be planted in your garden.  With that said, the older of our two trees was planted sometime around 1907 as part of the original estate on this site.  The owner was an accomplished naturalist and planted rare trees from China, this country, as well as many native trees from the Mid-Atlantic region. (PHOTO 1) The Princess Tree’s flowers are prolific and are shaped similar to the foxglove flower. (PHOTO 2) This tree has a signature shape. It’s very chunky and irregular.  The main trunk averages 6’ in diameter. Meet our Baby Boys 💙💙💙 Picture 1 is our biggest boy Magnus. He is our escape artist, but he is always looking over the herd and is such a cuddle bug. Picture 2 is our baby boy Pablo. Hello friends! Some of you have noticed a new name, new look, and some interesting new posts on the blog. Maybe you're wondering what's going on, and you're asking "What's up with these changes?" This is totally valid, as I've kept things quiet for now, but I'm finally able to share details! Our family has made some exciting life changes and decisions, and I'm taking my writing and business to a new level! Let me dive in and catch you up: 1. After my debut poetry collection came out, I didn't feel so great about it. A lot of my work was edited so much, it wasn't what I had originally written. I lost a lot of creative control and felt dejected instead of elated when my work came out. I fell victim to a vanity press and it reflected in my work. I've since been educated more about the publishing industry and after some great insight from successful independent authors, I've decided to branch out and publish on my own. This means there's a shift in the projects I've previously announced and then not said anything about, since I'm no longer agented or under that direction. I will be announcing my current project soon, which I think many beginning gardeners will love. All of my work will focus on the connection between people and nature. So if you are looking for cozy books that span genres like romance, mystery, and literary fiction, you'll want to stick around. 2. Our family bought a house, and we're starting a farm!! Homesteading has been a family dream for a long time. We finally found a property that allows us to realize that dream, and we'll be starting a homestead and sharing our journey along the way. 3. I'll be sharing more cozy content and products! I have been working on perfecting my cozy, nature loving brand to include handmade and sustainable goods, and they'll be available very soon! We're still working on our move from Japan to North Carolina, but once we are settled, you'll find this space to be a one stop shop for cozy crafts, recipes, books, and more. Best Mother’s Day gift. Two Nigerian goats. The big one is due any day now… maybe 4 babies. It will be my first time delivering a farm animal. They are so sweet and gentle. Guess I’ll be learning how to milk em too. Nigerian goats milk renders 1.5 times the amount of butter as cow’s milk. They produce 2 quarts a day. They love to eat weeds, brush, sticks and table scraps. Any eggs that are cracked can be fed to them as well… they are chicken friendly. Nigerians are quieter than pigmy’s. Smarter and gentler than dogs they really make great working pets. I love flowers and jewelry but this is a way cooler Mother’s Day present.
