Lack of sleep can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety, depression or other mental health issues commonly associated with trauma. When we prioritize sleep, we give our brain the chance to process and integrate traumatic memories in healthier ways. Sleep helps in consolidating memories, which is essential for emotional processing and learning. Good sleep hygiene can significantly improve mood stability, increase energy levels, and enhance resilience against daily stressors. To improve your sleep, consider establishing a calming bedtime routine that may include activities such as reading,  light stretching or listening to soothing music. You desire epic relationships - to feel love, intimacy, pleasure, and joy. This is possible for you. No matter how many bad endings you have endured or how conflict-filled your current relationship is. It will take devotion and dedication to find your way into a new relational reality, but it is entirely possible. Relational Healing is a potent byproduct of Internal Family Systems-based CPTSD Recovery. Using Parts Work, we can identify which Parts of us run which survival coding. When we then weave in Ancestral Medicine to our Parts Work, then we can also notice the fear-based frequencies related to our inheritances of hurt. There are five basic survival codes: >> Provide to be invaluable (1) >> Play dead to be ignored (2) >> Beg for mercy to be saved (3) >> Destroy to over-power (4) >> Connect to receive support (5) You will notice the first four Survival Codes may be effective to not be rejected, blamed, or shamed, but they are not conducive to a relationship that blows our mind away with its profound gifts. A key task for us each is to UNBURDEN Parts of ourselves that are remembering, storing, and living our past relational betrayals and abandonments, so that we stop looping back through these frozen-in-time experiences of humiliation, consciously or unconsciously. Relating through burdened Parts of us that strategically use Survival Codes 1 - 4 is exhausting. There is another way - Survival Code 5. It is right here in front of you. Y’all, children needs to feel delighted in for who they are. Like your whole world lights up when they walk into a room. Do you know the feeling? I feel this every time I come home and my dog literally DELIGHTS in my presence. It’s a special feeling. The opposite is the feeling of being watched instead of witnessed. Like you’re being surveilled and judged, rather than seen in your wholeness. Obviously, we live in real life, so we’re going to have experiences where we don’t feel seen, or like we are being missed. We are not children, and another adults are not our parents. HOWEVER, if you grew up with this feeling of being surveilled, then the experience of feeling surveilled may hit a little harder than if you grew up feeling seen. Constructive feedback can feel annihilating. Your partner sharing that you did something that frustrated them can feel like criticism of you as a whole person. Someone else’s opinion of you can have you turning on yourself and questioning who you are. If this is a tender space for you, dear one, then I SEE YOU. It sucks. And it takes time to reparent the parts of yourself that felt watched, judged, and surveilled. In those moments where your defenses are flared up, it’s time to turn towards yourself and be curious about what not be feeling seen or understood about you in this moment. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 It’s common to witness the playing of sides—a behaviour rooted in self-preservation and often absent of compassion, introspection or integrity. Family members have a knack for jumping ship when it suits them, showing little regard for the consequences of their actions or words on others. Instead of engaging in genuine dialogue or seeking mutual understanding, they opt for binary thinking, demanding loyalty and conformity to their narrow worldview, from the rest of the family. As the cycle-breaker within your family—a role many neurodivergent women can find themselves in—you may well be cast out as the black sheep. Because calling out harmful cycles within your family challenges deeply entrenched patterns and beliefs, making you a target for criticism and resistance from those invested in maintaining the status quo. Do you have that one (or maybe two) family member(s) who puts in considerable energy rallying others to undermine your beliefs and thwart your efforts to instigate positive change in your life? Your drive for autonomy triggers a reluctance in them to confront their own life choices and uncomfortable truths that lie within those choices. And rather than embark on the challenging journey of self-reflection, it’s safer for them to live within the comfort of familiar family patterns, avoiding accountability, and deflecting attention away from their own shortcomings. As the black sheep, you’re embodying the courage to break free from these destructive cycles, paving the way for transformation and healing within the lines of your own family. You will be called out for your differences, flaws, mistakes, and failures as you continue on your path of introspection and self reflection. 🔔 When faced with challenges, let’s practice acknowledging our efforts with gentleness and encouragement, rather than self-criticism, or reacting. Remember, healing begins with self-compassion. You’re deserving of your own love and understanding.

It’s quite common to hear people telling me they don’t remember much about their childhood and that nothing really stands out to them.⁣ ⁣ While these are their words, their body often tells a different story.⁣ ⁣ But why is there a gap between the body’s experience and our memory? ⁣ ⁣ Because when we experience overwhelming fear and pain as children, and we feel unsafe (physically or emotionally), our brain uses a protective mechanism as a shield against that pain.⁣ ⁣ During traumatic events, our brain's primary goal is survival. ⁣ ⁣ The amygdala, responsible for detecting threats and activating our fight or flight response, becomes highly active. At the same time, the prefrontal cortex, which handles rational thought and decision-making, becomes less active. ⁣ ⁣ This shift helps us react quickly to danger and threat, but it can block our ability to process and store memories of the event.⁣ ⁣ The hippocampus, which is responsible for forming and retrieving memories, is also affected by high levels of cortisol. Increased cortisol disrupts the hippocampus's normal functioning, making it harder to create coherent memories of traumatic experiences. This is why we can’t recall details or even entire events from our childhood if that was too stressful. ⁣ ⁣ When we become adults, our mind sees our childhood as ‘normal’ or ‘happy’ all the while our body might be expressing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain or autoimmune conditions.⁣ ⁣ One of the most beautiful things about our body is we don’t need to remember the past to heal from it. ⁣ ⁣ Somatic therapies focus on addressing the body's stored experiences and emotions, and give our nervous system voice to narrate its own experience.⁣ ⁣ My trauma and somatic coaching practice is currently full, but there are openings every 2-4 months. ⁣ ⁣ If you wish to work privately with me in the future, I invite you to add yourself to the waitlist.⁣ ⁣ On Instagram: link in bio⁣ ⁣ On Facebook: link here https://bit.ly/3K6hRBK 💜🦋

You cannot avoid “wounding” your children. ⁠ ⁠ The wound may be different to what you yourself experienced. ⁠ ⁠ But it is literally inevitable that in some way you will hurt your children emotionally, because you are not them. So it is impossible to meet their every need, understand all parts of them and make them feel entirely seen and heard, especially if you have more than one. ⁠ ⁠ Interestingly though, the wounding is not what is so important.⁠ ⁠ It’s your capacity to hold space for the feelings that this provokes, and your ability to be there for them, despite not meeting their needs, despite sometimes getting it wrong, and despite not making them feel understood. ⁠ ⁠ This is what mitigates whatever pain you have passed down and whatever new pain you might inflict - your ability to recognise your flawed humanity and celebrate theirs. ⁠ (Learn how to become the conscious mama you want to be through healing your inner child on the self-led, Making Peace With Your Past programme - see link in bio for details ♥️) ⁠ Image @candyheartscomics
