What a brilliant day to work at PREP! it was sunny, warm, and just breezy enough to keep us going. Today was the final prep day before planting. I scuffle hoed the entire area, added about 1" of beautiful black compost and finished with a nice thick mulch layer of straw. One of my personal favorite parts of working at this neighborhood urban farm is the commitment to a local supply chain and redirecting materials away from waste streams. This straw was collected last fall from local retailers' autumnal displays! Instead of going in the dumpster, out steadfast coordinators and volunteers picked it up and brought it to our site. 14 years after planting true perry trees here’s my first ever pour of real Perry made with Hendre Huffcap fruit. No sugar added and this is just shy of 9% ABV. When I have more varieties of perry trees fruiting this will have more complexity and mouthfeel but even with this varietal I’m getting caramel and banana notes and a tongue-tease of tannins. For many years I have put seeds in soil in the various places we called home. Over that time, I've continued each season to embrace sustainability more and more as I recognize the innumerable values it provides for our health, the health of this land and the health of the planet. As a means to give thanks for what we reap, physically and mentally, my primary aim is to coexist as harmoniously with Mother Nature as is feasible: turning kitchen, garden, barn and property cleanup excesses into rich compost; choosing a diversity of native cultivars and shopping locally; taking full advantage of nature's energy from sun and rain and beneficial insects; and foraging many of the materials needed to create garden infrastructure. For these simple peony cages, I thinned our aggressive wild grapes, wrapping and weaving the vines over and into themselves to form several wreaths. I sharpened the ends of portions of thick sunflower stalks dried over Winter, stuck three into the ground around each plant inside their vine crowns and used hemp twine to tie everything together. Natural, free, lovely, quick to make... and if they should need replacing in the seasons to come, I can easily forage new materials. Next project on the list: sunflower stalk pea trellises! Welch Luxus: im Moment gibt es fast jeden Tag Salat aus dem Garten. Das sind die Sorten 'Saint Antoine' und 'Wintermarie'. Heute hatte ich mittags schon einen Salat. Et un matin, la magie opère. La graine au chaud dans l'humidité s'est ouverte et c'est inscrit dans les gènes. Took a 4 hour drive trip to find mullein for my mom who has lung issues. I transplanted a few young plants in dry clay rocky areas of the food forest because that’s the environment that they grow from. This is my 1st attempt to grow them. Mischkultur in meinen großen Kübeln im Gewächshaus: vorgestern gepflanzt. So dicht war es noch nie. Hatte sich aber im Herbst bei Kohl und Begleitern bewährt. Zu sehen ist der Kübel mit den Zuckermelonen. Die anderen sind mit Gurken bepflanzt. Bei allen in etwa das gleiche noch mit drinnen: 🔖 Tomaten 🔖 Petersilie 🔖 Basilikum 🔖 Küchenzwiebel für Zwiebelgrün 🔖 Kurkuma 🔖 Ingwer 🔖 Süßkartoffeln (schlecht bewurzelte Stecklinge, da hatte ich neulich nen Beitrag zu) Bei einigen Gurkenkübeln werden noch Lima-, Spaghetti- und Helmbohnen und sowie Mexikanische Minigurke gesteckt. soil blockに挑戦中の自家採取マイクロトマトたち。 soil blockのチームは、もう一段階ボールを大きくする工程に手がまわらずにいるうち、成長が遅くトレイに残して育てていた子たちに追い抜かれました。 昨年も地面に直接設置している木枠の育苗箱の生育の方がよかったので、ポットやボールで制限された環境よりも伸び伸びと成長できるのかなと思います。 土は切り倒した木々をカブトムシたちが分解してくれたものをそのまま使用しています。肥料分のある土よりはゆっくりとした成長ですが、草と共に大きくなってくれています🌱
