Swap Pumpkin for Squash this Halloween! 🎃 The scary thing about Halloween Pumpkins isn’t the faces carved onto them, but the fact that around 15 million of them are thrown away each year in the UK alone! The large carving pumpkin varieties are predominantly grown for decoration not eating, they seriously lack in flavour and do not store well at all, particularly once carved. However, squash are a far more sustainable option as they are grown for culinary purposes, have a far superior flavour and storage potential and still offer plenty of decorative opportunities. There are so many interesting varieties to choose from and instead of carving them, decorate them, display them throughout Halloween and then eat or store them. My favourite variety is ‘crown prince’ they are a similar shape to a pumpkin with a grey/blue skin and orange flesh. They taste great and I’ve had them store until the following summer if stored in the correct conditions. I love seeing mushrooms in the no-dig gardens. We're seeing more & more every spring, which is a good sign that things are going well underneath the surface of our soil. Mushrooms are the fruit of a larger underground fungal system that is very beneficial to the garden. When left undisturbed, as in a no-dig garden, the fungal mycelia will help break down organic matter, making nutrients available to your plants. Mushrooms will emerge after long periods of wet, humid weather, like we've had this spring. But even after the weather dries up, the delicate fungal network is doing its magic underground. When we till the ground, it breaks up this network of mycelium, which will have a long-term effect on the soil structure & even the health of our plants. Moving to a no-dig gardening system allows the soil to heal & mycelium to grow unmolested, allowing our plants to develop healthier roots & giving better access to the nutrients in the soil.
Students can make a significant impact on environmental preservation by adopting sustainable practices like planting trees, waste reduction and recycling and engaging in community drives. It is the need of the hour for us to teach young learners and make them aware about the environmental issues. A day out yesterday supporting family & friends walking from Keswick to Barrow. It gave me the opportunity to revisit Ford Park In Ulverston. A beautifully maintained small walled garden with herb beds, vegetables beds, wildflower patches, home grown plants for sale , an amazing composting demonstration area, great views & trained fruit trees. The garden creatively embraces sustainability & wildlife gardening. The wisteria smelt & looked amazing & it was a real joy to sit on the bench and enjoy its beautiful & the heat from the 🌞 sun. Wormeries emptied, they have been very busy indeed. So much so I had to start a new wormery as there was too many worms😂Several bags of compost and a few bottles of worm tea. If we add some organic matter like dry leaves, food scraps or woody materials to sand, the sand magically becomes vibrant soil again! Soil isn't just dirt under our feet—it's a huge living world. In just a teaspoon of fertile soil, you can find over 9 billion organisms bustling with life. And get this: most of our body is made up of tiny organisms, too! Almost all the food we eat comes from soil, whether it's veggies on our plates or grass for animals. But here's a problem: the soil aren't as nutritious as they used to be due to the unsustainable agricultural practices over the years. But don't worry, there's something simple we can do to help. If the large amount of green waste produced daily at the market cannot be properly handled, it not only takes up a lot of spaces and affects environmental hygiene, but also leads to significant food waste issues. Swap Pumpkin for Squash this Halloween! 🎃 The scary thing about Halloween Pumpkins isn’t the faces carved onto them, but the fact that around 15 million of them are thrown away each year in the UK alone! The large carving pumpkin varieties are predominantly grown for decoration not eating, they seriously lack in flavour and do not store well at all, particularly once carved. However, squash are a far more sustainable option as they are grown for culinary purposes, have a far superior flavour and storage potential and still offer plenty of decorative opportunities. There are so many interesting varieties to choose from and instead of carving them, decorate them, display them throughout Halloween and then eat or store them. My favourite variety is ‘crown prince’ they are a similar shape to a pumpkin with a grey/blue skin and orange flesh. They taste great and I’ve had them store until the following summer if stored in the correct conditions. Mucking around It took me so long to start composting. But I’m hooked. Maybe I’m getting old but nothing can beat an evening of mixing kitchen waste with remix powder. And the only thing I like stirred not shaken in my compost bucket, is neem powder and microbe powder. Also, it’s kind of fun to examine and look at what all you’ve eaten. People have all sorts of ways of distressing, okay! I use the @dailydumpcompost kit, and just yesterday I saw an instagram post that announced the demise of Poonam Bir Kasturi, the founder of daily dump. I didn’t know her personally, but it makes me think, that this is what we all want right? To be remembered by someone who doesn’t even know you, for reasons that are good. Go well, Poonam.
