I love seeing mushrooms in the no-dig gardens. We're seeing more & more every spring, which is a good sign that things are going well underneath the surface of our soil. Mushrooms are the fruit of a larger underground fungal system that is very beneficial to the garden. When left undisturbed, as in a no-dig garden, the fungal mycelia will help break down organic matter, making nutrients available to your plants. Mushrooms will emerge after long periods of wet, humid weather, like we've had this spring. But even after the weather dries up, the delicate fungal network is doing its magic underground. When we till the ground, it breaks up this network of mycelium, which will have a long-term effect on the soil structure & even the health of our plants. Moving to a no-dig gardening system allows the soil to heal & mycelium to grow unmolested, allowing our plants to develop healthier roots & giving better access to the nutrients in the soil.

5 Years ago we started working this dirt. It was so hard, nothing but clumps of clay. We planted anyway…the water would just sit on top, and if it did soak in, it was only 1-2 inches deep at best. Hydrophobic soil occurs when the dirt is so dry that it forms a sort of waxy barrier on the particles and repels the water instead of absorbing it. The easiest and best way to fix this is to add organic matter. So each year we’ve planted and turned the soil again, and the dirt gets better every year! More than likely we won’t plant this whole plot as a garden this year. It’s a busy summer and we won’t have the time for a garden that large…instead the plan is to plant an annual grass that will serve as a grazing pasture and then turn to compost when we till it under in the fall. Some people worry when they see these guys pop up in their garden or lawns. These amazing images were taken by Andrew on one of our projects this week, and it was great to see them in this particular spot. When we first starting working in this area late last year, the soil was dry, dusty and depleted. We added our trusty mix of garden mate, seamungus, compost and leaf mulch and we are happy to see that so quickly we’ve assisted to get life back into the soil. Having life(eg beneficial bacteria, fungi, worms) in the soil is what plants need to thrive. Mushrooms are a good indication of a healthy soil as well as being beneficial in their own right. You’re likely to see more of them now as we’ve had so much rain. A down side of this, is that our gardens may be ‘too wet’, but that’s a story for another day(maybe tomorrow!) Enjoy your garden mushrooms, just don’t count on them for your Beef Wellington!

Mushrooms show that your soil is loaded with organic matter! When you grow an organic garden you are creating a mini ecosystem! Which I think is so cool! Here's one for @whatyourdoctoreats and I hope she would approve. This was the first part of my breakfast this morning and took just moments to make: fresh-picked lettuce, rocket and chervil, topped with olives, my home-pickled and homegrown beetroot, and wonderful parmesan from @mercatoitalianoltd and a little EVOO. (Isn't rocket, parmesan and olive oil just the perfect mix of flavours?!) I usually have kefir, yoghurt, nuts, seeds and fruit for breakfast, but forgot to make more yoghurt! So, I had to have something different, and fancied toast, which used to be my favourite breakfast years ago. I know enough now to wrap my carbs with fat and protein (peanut butter, tahini, etc) and I'm learning to precede it with fibre. I still had the kefir (homemade from local, organic, high-welfare, whole milk from @holycoworganic ) and some toast (home-baked, 50% wholemeal sourdough from organic flours). So I think I did my gut microbiome ok, avoided blood glucose spiking too highly, and went a fair way to my 30 plants a week! In all my days growing up in New York City and then my many years teaching Latin, I could never have predicted how excited I would get about having an “active” compost pile! I’m over the moon about how great it feels to collect food scraps, weeds, grass clippings, leaves, spent mushroom substrate, and spent microgreens media and watch it “cook” into a pile of soil-enriching compost that nourishes all of our vegetable plants here at the farm. This year we have joined forces with The Soil Association as part of their annual worm hunt to get a nationwide picture of worm abundance. All worms collected at FWCC will be put on their map to track their decline and see where they need the most help. The data they collect for the worm map will help them build a better understanding of the health of soils in gardens, allotments and green spaces across the UK. This will show where they need help to restore their numbers. Worms are in our news, films and our gardens, where children love uncovering them. The Soil Association are calling for people to become citizen scientists for our valuable worm pals, and if you don’t find as many as you were expecting, they have plenty of advice to help them improve the soil.
