My girl and I spent the day together at the lottie plotty. We packed our cool bag and took all our lunch bits and drinks with us. I actually got everything done! I'm knacked and a little sun burnt, but it's done. Now, I can concentrate on getting bits potted on, more sowing, and keeping things maintained. Hooray! 12 May 2024 Time to cover the fruit. It may look fiddly and believe me it was but it will be worth the effort. Like decorating a Christmas tree. This method worked so well in 2022. Last year however I missed my window for putting these on due to garden overwhelm but not this year! I am determined to make cherry jam this year. Best of all the bags are reusable. I have also covered my pears as I so badly want a harvest of these too. It’s been an awfully slow weekend outside as I haven’t been well…but the garden doesn’t stop and I needed to get out the house today. The wildflower meadow. Well I tried, so did S, but wildflower meadows require far more attention (and expense) than a greenhouse full of temperamental rare tropical orchids in the farthest upper reaches of the northern hemisphere. They self seed merrily across the garden but never their own area and wilt furiously most of the year. I call a halt. We repurpose the meadow as a potage and pretty immediately see results with potatoes harvested yesterday. The wildflower meadow seeds that self seeded in all borders are retained so we still have the wildflowers, just not in the designated meadow. Eventually this newly formed area will be very beautiful but right now to quote P ‘it’s a bit more industrial than I thought’ and I get it as with all things there will be seasons of netting and God knows what peppermint spray repellent after I fed Gussie, my latest garden pet of a ginormous soft silver grey rat, all the pumpkin seeds I’d planted last week . He looked unrepentant on trail cam and very handsome. Little sod. So watch this space as S (who prefers this about 1000% more then anything we’ve ever done) and I turn market gardeners. Everything is Out~ 🍃🤓🍃 Started early this morning planting out all corn, pumpkins, and squash! 🔸Corn- Damaun 🔸Pumpkin- Musquee de Provence 🔸Pumpkin- Marina di Chioggia 🔸Squash- Crookneck 🔸Squash- Straightneck We’ve given them an area to truly expand around the feet of the corn, with calendula and marigolds at the borders. Dreamy! Courgettes in the central low bed. Last of the tomatoes out. Whew ☕️ All beans have been untangled and planted, and are happily winding their way upward. Woot! I’ve surrounded them with saved lint from the tumble dryer (and hair clippings) to wart off any slugs and snails. 🐌 The scatter sown lettuce bed is gaining noticeable height each day. The entire bed is for cut and come again, as we use lettuces everyday. It will stay netted throughout the season to keep the beasties out. 🐌 Back at it! Last night something got into my main box and broke all the tops of my onions. Lots of the carrots looked …bad too. Im hoping that the onions will recover. But it reminds me that the fox that got into the cage was probably frightened and didn’t want to be in there which is why so much got ruined. Reminded me to take more care with the cages I put up. I replanted what I could and dug out what couldn’t be saved. I’ve been a bit neglectful of the allotment in the last couple of weeks, lots of big life changes left me with a lack of motivation. But yesterday I hit it hard in the sunshine and feel like a made a good dent. Managed to finish off the shed that my parents got me for my birthday and assemble the poly tunnel ready for crops to go in as well as have a general tidy up. The ultimate allotment tool top 3 ✨ Over the years, I’ve been trying to narrow down my allotment tool top 3 and if you told me when I started these would be my most used, I probably would have laughed at you whilst boldly carrying my fork and spade. 1. A hoe. Doesn’t have to be a fancy hoe, and they come in many shapes but a trusty hoe. Hoeing the soil to get rid of the weeds before they properly root is a godsend. It takes me 10 minutes a week to do “all the gaps” and if your hoe is sharp enough, it will break up some of the surface soil clumps too without damaging the soil structure underneath. I sow my plants with wide enough gaps to hoe inbetween too. Mine is a Wolf Garten interchangeable tool hoe, so it gets plenty of use with various lengths of pole and other tools too. 2. My hori hori knife. There’s not a lot I don’t do without this knife. The brand doesn’t really matter, but having one straight edge and one serrated edge makes all the difference. It’s SHARP, anywhere off the allotment site, I’d be arrested for carrying it. I plant with it, weed with it, make lines with it, chop stalks with it; you name it, I use it. 3. My secateurs. I’m a firm believer you need a strong, sharp pair of secateurs for life. In the gardening business world, Felcos are the top dog. It’s a worthy investment that will last you for many years if you look after them and clean them regularly…… which I need to get better at to say the least. I use an olive oil spray and wipe mine often to prevent spreading disease but they can be easily taken apart for cleaning too. All of my harvests above ground are taken with these secateurs as well as cutting flowers and sometimes canes too! A sharp pair go far. Also getting a shout out as a wild card is my bulb planter, which I use for planting no dig potatoes. Love a wild idea which really works! THIS DOG! You wouldn’t believe how much more comfortable and happy she is since moving. She barely used her toys, never played outside, never played fetch. The list goes on! We started to think she had been put in the wrong body and was secretly a snoozy cat haha! Flash forward to the new house, she has a garden now and lots more space. The landing is now a doggy’s dream bed area and she’s constantly face first in her toy basket! She plays on the landing and has zoomies downstairs every day. She’s becoming much more independent and even though we are sat in the living room watching something (my back has gone I’m in absolute agony. Some of the worst pain I have experienced and i don’t know what’s caused it, hoping a few more rest days will help - not feeling optimistic though! Worst timing I just want to be getting my allotment area ready! I have the help of some very good people so I’m well cared for and so are my plants!) she is outside sunbathing on her own. She’s a very anxious dog, we are with her 24 hours a day and she was born in covid so she’s very wary in public. I’m so happy she’s happy though!
