Do you bathe your bees? The hardest part is finding a teeny tiny bar of soap. Bee baths are something I didn’t know about for a long time. Heck, there are tons of things I still don’t know about fostering a pollinator friendly garden. But because I’m always trying to improve, eventually I stumbled across this important addition to my landscape. Honeybees don’t actually drink the water because they’re thirsty. Instead they use the water from their wings to keep themselves cool. And, they also use the water to aid digestion. But, just as important is the benefit of the water for bee larvae. The nurse bees use the water to create royal jelly—the stuff they feed bee larvae. A bee bath doesn’t have to be elaborate. No need to install water jets, a shelf for shampoo bottle storage, etc. Simply find a shallow tray or bowl, fill it with rocks (for the bees to stand on), and then top it off with water. It doesn’t matter too much if the water gets dirty or has some plant growth. You don’t need to add sugar or honey to the water. You want bees, not ants. You don’t need to provide tiny towels for the bees to use to dry off. My Nonna’s garden was like magic! Her and my Nonno had a big backyard but only a small square of grass—-there was a recycled brick patio covered with a grape trellis and lined with a row of roses on the outside. At the far end was a gate to the huge vegetable garden. They had it set up in little sections separated by stone paths all in a grid. They’d rotate the occupants of each section every year. In the midst of the summer those paths were fun to run and hide among the tall tomatoes and beans! I can close my eyes and see the giant barrels near the entrance and along the backside of the mysterious “shanty” that collected rainwater to give everything a drink! That shanty though——it was always locked and to this day, I only have very fuzzy memories of the contents! Nonna never wanted us to get hurt on the rows of garden tools that my Nonno kept inside. But we all loved that garden—and loved helping Nonna tie tomatoes and pick the beans—always a massive harvest each year! Today—-my own garden is sweet but pales in comparison. We’ve had to scale back due to a groundhog family that lives under our shed and devours some plants as soon as they are planted! We still enjoy homegrown tomatoes and beans. And every one makes me smile thinking of Nonna’s garden! Gardening vibes and more in the shop! Tomatoes are all in the greenhouse and finally staked up. I should’ve staked them a long time ago but life has been busy. A couple plants already have tomatoes growing. Earliest I’ve ever had. Hoping to get a good harvest this year, it’s not easy growing tomatoes and other heat loving plants in Alaska. My original plan was to plant in the ground but since we plan to put in a better greenhouse in a different location next year I just decided it was easier to use buckets. Trying to get a couple more days of CO2 and artificial lighting before the giant pumpkin plant outgrows the greenhouse and it just gets too hot. It's 42 days since the seed started soaking and 25 days since the plant got transplanted outside. The main vine is around 12 feet long and it has some big leaves. Today I added a couple of small lights to help in the morning and night, but they pretty much only handle a leaf or two each... Let’s talk garlic rust this #GarlicWatchWednesday! 🧄 Firstly, please do not panic. I get rust every year on my garlic and still have a wonderful crop of garlic. Starting at the beginning, rust is a crop specific fungal infection which appears as an orange speckle on all the leaves of the garlic, firstly starting on the outer leaves. The fungal disease is carried by spores spread by wind, and really easily spread by wind so if there’s another plant with rust in your entire allotment site or neighbourhood, you’re likely to get it too. It only affects the leaves and stems, not the bulb underground, meaning the garlic is still edible. The good news is a cool wet spring is ideal for rust, and if you’re only starting to see it now on your garlic, it’s so late in the growing season that it won’t completely dominate your plants because the bulbs have already had a chance to form. Note; this weather in the next six weeks is the PRIME time for bulbs to bulk up so stop watering your garlic and let nature decide when the harvest is coming. The leaves should start yellowing and as they yellow, the plant puts all its effort into the bulb. By not watering, you are encouraging this process and larger bulbs for harvest in June ish. My first #nodiggarden was an almost success 😏. All 31 Hosta survived, 9 Hellebore, 2 ferns, 2 heuchera 2 brunnera and one hydrangea . Only the hydrangea didn’t make 😒. All the plants lifted out of the ground and needed to be pushed back in. Not sure why this happened 🤷♀️. It’s been a super busy few weeks here, hence zero posts! We’ve moved most of our things from the other house which means it’ll be ready to get the agents around next week which is fantastic. It looks clutter-and-child-free and much bigger without all the toys and books! This means we’re now living at College Farm (🥳) and I’m slowly sorting and organising toys and books and clothes and what seems our whole lives! I have absolutely no idea how everything fit into our 2 bedroom home. We’ve been joking that College Farm needs to be bigger to fit everything in… which is obviously not true 😂, it’s just a case of bringing in more storage (I’ve been hunting for items at local actions and found some lovely bits locally on Facebook marketplace). Then last Monday evening our almost-four-year-old fell down the last few stairs and landed on the flagstones, breaking her little arm! I was right behind her and I’m pretty sure her croc caught the carpet - those things can be lethal! It’s been really lovely watching the roses come out in amongst the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. The ones by the front door ate a gorgeous bright pink, I think (they’re not fully out yet). This David Austen rose by the back door is in full swing and it looks stunning - the blooms are a sweet, summery mix of yellow, peach and creamy yellow.
It comes in a myriad of colours, self seeds and hybridises freely around the garden and has wonderfully architectural foliage when the flowers finish.
