It seems that our mini heatwave maying be coming to an end, we have rain forecast for tomorrow so we’ve made the most of the sun this weekend. Everything be greenhouse has doubled in size and it’s time to start moving everything over into bigger pots or planting them out. We’ve spent a lot of the weekend weeding and I think we’re finally getting on top of the couch grass thanks to the new weed burner, just got the strawberry plots left to tidy up. We took home our first harvest of rhubarb which has gone wild. The journey - So it's been two weeks since we got our allotment plot ☺️ The plot hadn't been worked for a couple of years, so everything was VERY overgrown . We extended the bank holiday last weekend and dedicated four whole days to clearing as much as we could. We were super lucky as the site manager had already cleared a lot of the surface before we officially got the key. Our plan from the start was to get it clear, and put in a sturdy boarder. That way we know exactly what we're working with and can eventually create rows of beds inside 🥕🥦🍅 Clearing it was fairly straightforward. However, we have only removed surface overgrowth, the soil underneath is covered in the roots of couch grass (and various other unwanted roots). This weekend was spent levelling out and securing the boarders, whilst also trying to figure out the next step 😂 At the moment we are thinking of working one small section and covering the rest to try and kill off anything unwanted 🤔 But for now, lets have a cuppa tea 👌🏼 #allotmentlife #allotment #allotmentgarden #allotmentuk #allotmentlove #allotments #allotmentideas #allotmentsofinstagram #boarder #tea #cuppa #putthekettleon
I wasn’t going to top my peppers this year, but the slugs seem to have done it for me. For a couple of days now I’ve seen slug trails in the poly tunnel, but for the life of me couldn’t find the culprit…until now! I found six of them all huddled together underneath a big pot I have at the end of the tunnel. Needless to say they have been evicted henceforth never to return to their cozy little pad under the pot. Things are really springing into life at the allotment now we’ve had a good run of sunshine and warmth! The broad beans have flowered and the bees have been pollinating them. Allotment check-in: 🌱 Earthed up potatoes with grass clippings from the garden. Quite pleased with it! 🌱 Garlic is full of cooking ingredients. Now it's time to harvest some garlic stems to fry with some lardons. Yum yum! 🌱 Some odd spinach or chards are growing in the runner bean patch.... spotted them during weeding. Let's keep them and see how it goes... 🌱 Finally beans and peas have germinated after sowing some directly. Four months into our time at plot 31a! 🌿 We are now growing: rhubarb ✔️ blackberries ✔️ raspberries ✔️ potatoes ✔️ herbs ✔️ carrots ✔️ spring onion ✔️ lettuce ✔️ We have also added our own wildlife pond, and the kids love to spot the frogs each time they visit. First harvest of the year! Oh my how peppery home grown raddish are compared to shop bought! Its crazy! I made a smashed salad with raddish, smashed under a knife and roughly cut, salad mizuna and a rocket rough cut, chives with flowers finely chopped, smashed a large garlic clove and soaked in a mix of light soy, dark soy and balsamic vinegar. Served with a beef curry i had i the the slow cooker all day and pilau rice. Bloomin delicious! Progress has been slow this weekend with the heat (it was 24⁰ when we gave up today!) but we made progress nonetheless! Still more digging out of the bed to square it off - we're probably halfway there with removing the grass. We massively underestimated how long this task would take and how hard it would be - our plot is clay and I'm pretty sure I could take it into school for the children to model 😂 We did get the baby's tree planted - our council (@baberghsuffolk and @midsuffolk) give a tree to each baby born which is amazing. We've planted it in the middle of the section we are giving over to him, for when he's a little bigger. It's a Gala apple and I'm so excited by the thought of him picking apples from it as he grows up! What glorious weather! 🌞 This Saturday was absolutely beautiful - finally! 🥳 We spent the morning wandering a local woodland & foraging more wild garlic, probably our last forage of the season. The tomatoes are finally all out in the polytunnel. Good timing too because some were almost too big to fit in the car boot 😂 my first go at growing tomatoes from seed and by myself. Last time was when I was a kid and we grew them at my home in North Wales. Started building a new composter today which we are going to add planters on top and a surprise round the sides, also built a trellis for the runner beans to run up and continued turning the soil to flatten the land for baby girls area 🤩💚🌿 !!

I bought some copper mesh as a snail/slug deterrent and put it around my brocolli I planted Friday. I know it's only day 2 and it's been warm and dry but so far so good. Finished the squash and cucumber arch yesterday which I'm really pleased with. I'm hoping to have a lovely lush green tunnel in a couple of months. Beans haven't sustained any slug damage and the courgettes, with mesh round, are looking fab. My new poly tunnel door made by my clever hubby. He also lined some more raised beds for me and put chicken wire around the chicken pen. Hoping to create a better deterrent for Mr Rat. I spent more time than I would have liked today watering. Potted on some herbs, cleared another bed of the dreaded bindweed then planted out some more cabbages interspersed with marigolds and lots of strulch. Still emptying the slug pubs. They have been full most days. Hopefully it’s reduced their numbers somewhat! Next week it’s time to put the peppers and tomatoes in their final planting space. 🍅 After taking lots of care to germinate various tomato seeds, and raise them in the comfort of a sunny bedroom window, then worry about them when they are taken to the greenhouse (rushing every morning to make sure they’ve survived the night), then potting on to make sure they get fresh compost and don’t get potbound 🫣 we always get a big bunch of random seedlings growing in the homemade compost, obviously growing from a composted tomato 🤣 . I was working away last week..... My phone rang early on Tuesday morning, and the somewhat gruff voice on the other end wanted to know did I want any free logs? ...Rewind to few years ago: I signed up to a website to be a 'tip site' for tree surgeons who need to offload chip and logs. Every few months or so, I get a truckload of woodchip, but last week was the first offer of some logs. I said an enthusiastic yes, passed over my address, and gave instructions on where to deposit the logs. Fast forward then to Saturday morning. I hadn't noticed the pile when I arrived home in the early hours, but upon pulling back the curtains, I'm fairly sure I let out an audible gasp at the pile. There must be at least three years' worth of wood there, which is amazing. Our old cottage is on oil, so we strive to use the woodburners where we can until the plans for solar panels and a ground source heat pump come to fruition.
