Onion seedlings are finally in the ground- Iโve found that separating the seedlings carefully and making a shallow trench is the easiest and quickest way to plant them. Progress has been slow this weekend with the heat (it was 24โฐ when we gave up today!) but we made progress nonetheless! Still more digging out of the bed to square it off - we're probably halfway there with removing the grass. We massively underestimated how long this task would take and how hard it would be - our plot is clay and I'm pretty sure I could take it into school for the children to model ๐ We did get the baby's tree planted - our council (@baberghsuffolk and @midsuffolk) give a tree to each baby born which is amazing. We've planted it in the middle of the section we are giving over to him, for when he's a little bigger. It's a Gala apple and I'm so excited by the thought of him picking apples from it as he grows up! What glorious weather! ๐ This Saturday was absolutely beautiful - finally! ๐ฅณ We spent the morning wandering a local woodland & foraging more wild garlic, probably our last forage of the season. We then used the wild garlic to make lots of tasty dishes! ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ณ Sunday was dedicated to the plot. I'll admit we haven't spent much time there lately. Between being sick, away & other commitments, the plot has taken a back seat in recent weeks. So, it was nice to spend the day prepping beds and starting to tackle the much needed weeding. Got home from the plot at 10.30pm and been photographing the northern lights here in the northwest from midnight tonight and itโs now 2.30am. Set the Cannon camera on the tripod on a 15 second shutter speed with 400 ISO. No filters, just the natural colours and how stunningly beautiful they are. What a wondrous thing nature and our planet truly are! A once in a lifetime opportunity to see the borealis in the UK! ๐ฟ๐ซถ My Allotment is my absolute happy place! There is something magical for me about getting my hands in the soil, tending my plants, weeding, watering and watching everything grow. Since we took our allotment patch on last June, we have eaten something we've grown, almost every week, even if it's just been a handful of chard. Did you know that soil contains the bacteria Mycobacterium vaccae that is absorbed through the skin of your fingers and palms when you're gardening? This bacteria triggers a release of serotonin (the happy hormone) in your brain. Serotonin is also a natural antidepressant and mood lifter; it also strengthens the immune system and provides a general sense of wellbeing. I can lose hours when on the allotment, it's one of the few places I feel completely calm and that I can be 100% myself. Cockchafers, also nicknamed the Maybug, are known to be a nuisance around the garden. The adult bugs will seek plants and flowers but are unlikely to cause too much damage, grubs, however live in the soil and will be feeding on grass roots which can be detrimental (Much like the leather jackets!) Adult Cockchafers have large brown-coloured, hairy bodies with wings on their back and long antennas on the front. They make a loud buzzing noise which is actually louder than bees! The grubs are only a few millimetres long and have a plump, creamy white c-shaped body and can be found in the soil. Adult Cockchafers can be warded off by spraying lavender-scented products around plants and flowers and the grubs can be brought to the surface by watering the garden at night and covering the damp area with a blanket or sack. By the morning theyโll appear on top of the soil. Some more roses have bloomed on the allotment! 100s of buds formed and swelling with the potential for most to be in flower in 10-14 days time. 1) ๐ช๐ถ๐ป๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น 'Auscat' from David Austin 2) ๐๐ค๐จ๐ ๐๐ค๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ 'Bicolor', also known as Austrian Copper, petals yellow underneath, bright orange on top. In cultivation since the 12th century 3) 'Ispahan', a Damask rose, known since 1832. So many buds on this, when they bloom it will look like it came from the set of the Barbie film 4) 'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain'. Hybrid Perpetual raised by Lacharme in France 1865. Wonderful colour and scent. 5) 'Gloire des Mousseux' a moss rose bred by Laffay in 1852. Thought lost, but a specimen was found growing in Bermuda. 6) ๐ ๐ช๐ต๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ 'Peafanfare'. Compact rose raised by Pearce in 2006. This has been flowering prolificly since I'd put it in the ground. 2 years in a pot, it is clearly happy in its new home! 9) 'Viridiflora'. I thought I had the start of rust but it doesnโt appear to progressed so hoping itโs just a bit hot. Nice big feed of potash and theyโre already perking up. The bed is right next to loads of bindweed and itโs usually just a bit annoying but itโs rampant this year. Once the garlic is up Iโm going to have to properly deal with it I think. Finally some blossoms on our green gage tree. ๐ธ This tree was already on the plot when we inherited it, but there was a problem - it was in a bad spot, right at the front middle of the plot! We were also told it had never produced fruit before.๐ Hubby was determined to give it a chance. We spent multiple weekends digging up the tree, being careful not to break the roots. We then replanted it in a better location near the back of the plot. ๐ช Last year we didn't get a single blossom, which was to be expected after the shock of a transplant.
