When your garden gives you a lot of fresh produce you sometimes get challenged by the abundance. This fall I had to harvest lot of apples precautionary early because they were affected by the dimple bug. However they are still good for use, and because I would hate to waste anything I have grown (or bought), I created few new recipes: First I juiced some and made apple jelly. I finished off juicing some adding extra carrots to enjoy as a healthy drinking juice. Left over pulp could have easily been fed to our chickens, but instead I decided to incorporate it in a new version of apple/carrots cake including our eggs, some dates and almond flour. I didn’t follow any recipe and just my nose. It turned out delicious and very moist and is s nutritious snack rather than just a sweet cake. Then I still had some leftover apple pulp and created a new version of an Anzac apple and raisin cookie with coconut oil instead of butter. Also a very nice turn out and healthier and better for you than ordinary biscuits. I have like 5 new flowers on my tomato plant hopefully they will grow soon and more flowers will come. I’ve always wanted to grow tomatoes but never wanted to bc I didn’t want to wait that long and I was afraid I would mess it up but I love fresh tomatoes. I love them in sandwiches in soup in sauce in pizza so many different things but I don’t like store bought because organic is so expensive and they are always so soft or never just right. They don’t taste good. I’m excited to see how my tomato plant grows and can’t wait to pick tomatoes I’ve grown myself. I bought the tomato plant from a farmers market for 7 dollars and was nervous it wouldn’t grow but when I saw my first tomato growing it was like there was hope. I love seeing God’s creation and seeing something I planted and watered come to fruition. Thankful for God and His amazing sunlight to help little #ginnyweasley to grow. Gardening has really quietened down with it being Autumn 🍂 I've been doing bits and pieces out there sporadically, including a big tidy up and refresh of the soil with sheep pallets and compost, taking out the last of the veggies, harvesting all the potatoes, planting spring bulbs (which I am soooo excited about), saving a couple lots of flower seeds and putting in two new corrugated metal garden beds next to the green house! Here's some random garden updates from the past month or so 👩🌾 1 - my tulips are in! I really hope these take off and do what their meant to. I've got 90 bulbs in this half of the bed. I want them to look a bit random and organic vs neat in rows. I've got lots of different colours and kinds including peony, fringed and the classic style 🌷 I also want them to look 'full' in their bed so 🤞 I haven't planted them too close to one another. 2 - my first lot of daffodils are sprouting 🥳 3 - more daffodils! This time I've planted some white ones 🤍 4 - I had to plant a couple more packets of ranunculus because either rats or birds ate 14/20 of my corms 🐀🐦 5 - I got all these sunflower seeds from one flower head 👏 I'll be sorted this summer for sunflower seeds for sure 🌻 6 - how pretty do the teeny tiny stars look on a cosmos?! 🌸🌟 I managed to save about 30 seeds from this plant for next summer. 7 - peep the bumble bee bum on my petunia 🐝 somehow this petunia is still thriving (not complaining 💜) 8 - we got a good douse of rain which was needed for the garden and the water tank 💧 9 - slowly (and not so patiently) waiting for my luffas to dry out on the vine. What a day! We processed 16 chickens today. 106.74 pounds, to be exact. Our biggest bird was 7.9 pounds and the smallest 5.8 pounds with an average of 6.7 pounds. We froze 6 of them whole and divided the others out based on the way we will eat them. Blue Kohl Rabi 👾🌱 Kohl Rabi is a fun one to grow, otherwise known as a ‘german turnip’ or ‘gourmet turnip’ even though it actually belongs to the Brassica family. All parts are edible, the leaves can be used just like kale, although generally the part that is eaten is the swollen stem which is ready from golf ball through to tennis ball size generally, but I let this one grow to see just how big it would get. 👾👀 I just harvest them by cutting the stem just above the soil level with a sharp knife (I think mine needs sharpening) 😂 leaving the roots in the ground to feed the soil life. I haven’t found it too prone to pests, other than cabbage whites, and I find it’s best sown and grown early or late in the season under-cover and for main-crop use outside. Indestructible Nasturtium Variety! 🌺👀 I grow nasturtium every year as they are just so versatile. They are great for pollinators, they divert common pest away from other crops, and all parts of the plant are edible. But ‘purple emperor’ seems to live up to its name, and has been the hardiest and most long lived variety this season. When all other varieties have finally succumbed to the onslaught of pests such as black fly or cabbage white caterpillars, or have simply ran their course and died back, my ‘purple emperor’ has stood strong, flowering all season and still continuing to do so! I’ll definitely be saving seed from this one and planting next year to ensure it’s not been a complete fluke, but I’ve had it growing in multiple locations around the garden and it’s still going. Last night something got into my main box and broke all the tops of my onions. Lots of the carrots looked …bad too. Im hoping that the onions will recover. But it reminds me that the fox that got into the cage was probably frightened and didn’t want to be in there which is why so much got ruined. Reminded me to take more care with the cages I put up. I replanted what I could and dug out what couldn’t be saved. Watercress is one of my favourites in salads so I cheated and got a couple of plug plants and left them sitting in a saucer of constant water. Nothing but fresh , local and home grown ingredients. Went a little crazy in the kitchen today. We will be well fed for a long time. We have a pine mushroom & lamb ragu simmering away. Pine mushrooms picked yesterday, lamb from the paddock. I will use the fresh pasta I bought today from the bonbeach market and our home grown parsley!!! I also made a lamb, feta, olive risoni dish to use up some bbq chops. I’m not going to be winning any kumara growing prizes this year but to be honest, these guys never stood a chance. I tried to grow my own tipu for planting, wasn’t really successful and ended up planting them way too late in the season to have any hopes of a good crop. A bit sad but looking at the bright side I get to experiment with a way of being super prepared for next season. These small kumara will go into storage for propagating tipu next spring but I’ve also taken some of the vines that had small roots attached and planted them up in a pot. The pot will go in the greenhouse for the winter with the hopes of keeping them alive for the next 6 months. Ambitious and possibly pointless but you never know until you try! My tomato babies are growing tall! 🌱 Our girls eat cherry tomatoes like candy & each have their favorites that I can't find anywhere, so I grow them. Their favorites are; white cherry, sungold, & pink bumble bee (all from @johnnys_seeds). We decided to try a new one this year though, sunpeach. Can't wait to get these in the ground 🙌
