This particular client was moving from Georgia to coastal, #MobileAlabama and wanted some native suggestions to populate their shady side yard. Taking their soil type and being in a hurricane-prone environment into account, along with limited sunlight, I compiled this lovely list of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plantings so that they can populate their garden from the tree canopy, all the way down to the ground-level with vegetation well-suited for their particular environment. I enjoy "geeking out" on the details though, so I included each of the species' "superpowers" so that they'd know how to best use each one 🤓. Gurken : Schnecken 0 : 2 Bild 1 Nach der ersten Nacht sind 2 Gurken den Schnecken zum Opfer gefallen. Zum Glück haben wir 2er Paare gepflanzt. Haben dann gestern den dicken Wall noch etwas von den Gurken weggezogen und heute morgen gab es keine weiteren Verluste an dieser Seite. Dafür waren die Schnecken der Meinung, daß wir die Tschernij Prinzen zu eng gepflanzt haben und sie haben die mittlere entfernt (zumindest alle Blätter). Bild 2 In den beiden unteren Reihen stehen jetzt unsere Paprika und die Chili kommen auf die Südseite vom Haus um unliebsame Kreuzbestäubung zu vermeiden. Bild 3 Hier könnt ihr hoffentlich erkennen, wie wir größere Niederschläge handhaben. Regenwasser kann sich in den Gehwegen sammeln und bei Bedarf in die darunter liegenden Ebene überlaufen. Wobei der Überlauf mal rechts, mal links ist. Bild 4 In den nächsten Tagen bauen wir solche 3 Beine aus Resten des Haselnussbusches. Dieser alte Rechen ist übrigens das Werkzeug, das hier die Landgestaltung übernimmt. Eine Schaufel oder einen Spaten braucht es hier nicht. Um Pflanzlöcher in den zum Teil noch stark holzstruckturierten Boden zu machen, eignet sich die Machete am besten. 水浸しの庭で ①とうとうこの美しいものが我がガーデンに！ ようこそいらっしゃいました。 来てくれてありがとう。 生き物の移り変わりがとてもおもしろいです。 1年目は、ナメクジだらけで、畑先輩がトラップを 手作りして持ってきてくれるほどでしたが、 薬を使いたくなかったので2年目は放置しました。 見つけるたびに割り箸で取って、ごめんなさーい！と 駐車場のコンクリに投げていました。 (5分もしないで干からびる) ナメクジの数がずいぶん減ったなぁと思っていたら 草刈りの度にコウガイビルを見かけるように。 3年目の去年は、ナメクジもコウガイビルも 数回しか見なかった気がする。 そして4年目の今日は、雨上がりなのにナメクジが １匹もいませんでした。 ビーズにような卵はいくつか発見したので これから出会うかもしれないです。 ②オルレアがいっぱい咲いてます。 ビオラがあるうちにガザニアもヤロウも咲けば もっと賑やかになっていいなー。 難波光江さんのポタジェのように みっちりと植えられた美しい花壇にしたいけど、 行き当たりばったりで植えてるので 色をうまく組み合わせるのが難しいです。 ③バルコニープランターで育てていたチコリ。 掘り上げた根っこを炒って飲んでみたかったんですが、 時間がなくて放置していたら変色してしまい、 諦めてまた植えました。 適当に埋めただけでちゃんと生えてくれるものは ほんとにありがたいなー。 ④友人の畑に自生して大きく育っていた桑の木が 羨ましくて、赤ちゃん苗をもらってきました。 欲張って5本も！ 全部新芽が出て、一安心。 ⑤先日の雨の日にミミズコンポストを開けてみたら 中が水浸しになってるのを初めて見ました。 これじゃミミズどっか行っちゃうよねぇ。 近くに穴を掘って水が流れるようにしてみました。 ⑥粘土層のすぐ上の、ミミズか何かの穴から、 湧き水のようにどんどん水が出てきます。 家を建てたときの造成用の土が薄い茶色で 黒い腐植とくっきり分かれてますね。 もっとどんどん深くまで、黒いツチにしたい。 ⑦1時間近く経つ頃には、穴にたっぷり水が溜まって コンポストからはすっかり抜けました。 この穴には、この間剪定したトネリコの枝を 縦にぎゅうぎゅうと詰めようと思います。 #庭 #ガーデニング #家庭菜園 #不耕起栽培 #いきものパラダイス #果樹栽培 Lacewings! Paw Paw flowers! It is so hard to photograph these suckers, especially on our tiny tree. They point straight down so these were only a foot or so off the ground meaning I was on my back. I'll try again next year when our trees are a bit bigger and hopefully have even more blooms. The flowers go through two stages, a male and a female stage, and are not self-fertile. We saved the pollen from the first tree that opened and reached the male stage to try to pollinate these. This is my second year growing garlic. The first year my crop was wiped out by allium leaf miner, this year I covered my crop. Most of it’s still growing but I noticed one smaller stalk had collapsed so I dug it up. I was expecting that sort of onion like structure I’ve seen with immature garlic but to my surprise, 4 cloves instead. Not huge but still. A good sign given how much larger most of the other stalks are. It is a deciduous tree related to the #kapok tree, and is native to the tropical and subtropical forests of #SouthAmerica. This species flowers from late summer to autumn. I have been having fun working on these exterior renderings to show what the house looks like! I went ahead and used multiple programs to do this. I initially tried to get this thru a freelancer but the fees are crazy right now. I already had the 3D model which reduces their work, but they were charging for a lot of stuff I did not need. Most of the freelancers are from the India or Pakistan, they posted fees of $50 but then after initial discussion that fee is really for a bare bones massing model, and not what I was looking for. I now understand the whole switch there, but I would have avoided it altogether and not wasted time on them if I had known the actual costs (which was from $350 to $500) for a rendering similar to what they posted for the job. My 3D model will have to do. Honestly I am happy with it and am putting this up on my website. I think I captured the exterior wall finishes fine, and the roof looks good. If I can, I want to have better control of the wall paint colors as they render on the computer model. I like the wood stain color on the porch but definitely have to refine it. I am planning to get us black framed windows all throughout. Those cost more, but I think it is worth it. We will see when we get to purchasing them. Initially they looked to be about $50 more expensive than the white ones. I made the landscape look lush - which is my goal - to have a productive #foodforest lawn. I really wish we could keep the landscape budget where I had it but it seems like it is another opportunity for a creative solution. Inga edulis, also known as Ice Cream Bean. Got these seeds from Kelli of #TreeHouseChicks who coated them in Cinnamon to prevent mold and fungus plus moist paper toweling to keep the seeds alive during their trip from Hawaii to San Francisco via snail mail. All arrived in perfect condition and quickly rewarded her efforts and my investment with 100% germination. After a few weeks of babying on a heated seed mat in my grow room with a mix of natural and artificial illumination these are ready to be hardened off on the porch where they will hopefully acclimate to our mild/chilly micro-climate. Each seed by the way proved to be poly-embryonic! These came from an especially big pod producer and I'm crossing my fingers that the largest and most vigorous of these sprouts will eventually survive our frost free Winters and produce yummy treats. These are legumes! They fix nitrogen in the soil and the giant pods when cracked open look like they hold a peeled banana, but it breaks up into sections - each with a large kernel (often sprouting right in the pod) surrounded by a cotton candy like fluff which you suck off the seed for a culinary reward reminiscent of vanilla ice cream. Careful, don't eat the raw seeds! Note the sky. Anyone growing Rosella? I have two plants with pale yellow flowers and dark centres. That’s what I’ve grown each year. Then this beauty has grown large pink flowers, with red centres and large red calyxes. Oh, I thought all Rosellas were the same. So there are different varieties? There are a number of reasons that we let our brassicas live in our food forest for multiple years. One is that the plants produce wonderful little broccoli like florets with tender, asparagus like stems that we really enjoy in the springtime. (Check out our YouTube channel for a short called “What do you do when your kale starts to go to seed?” Link to our YouTube channel in our bio.) Another reason is that the plants make seed pods which drop seeds and make new plants, in addition to providing extra seeds to share. A third reason is these guys. 05/12/2024 - Panache Fig Tree NOTES: starting on year two for this one. Bought it from the Arbor Gate Nursery in Tomball, TX. We did have fruit last year, but it did not mature. Had to pick and throw away most of the figs. This year is weird! Didn't even get time to grow new branches that much and it began to fruit! Kinda crazy, since these are suppose to ripen early fall. We're a long way from fall, maybe we'll get two crops this season?! The only thing I did at the beginning of the season was add a mulch layer to the container. Seems ro be a lot more helpful. I noticed that with the other fog container growers as well. Took a 4 hour drive trip to find mullein for my mom who has lung issues. I transplanted a few young plants in dry clay rocky areas of the food forest because that’s the environment that they grow from. This is my 1st attempt to grow them. Die letzten Tage habe ich "Einen Waldgarten erschaffen", die Deutsche Übersetzung von "Creating a forest Garden" von Martin Crawford gelesen. Das Buch hat mich absolut begeistert. Die deutsche Übersetzung bezieht sich inhaltlich an vielen Stellen direkt auf Deutschland. Thematisch gibt es eine weite Bandbreite. Ausführlich wird erklärt, worauf beim Planen eines essbaren Waldgarten zu achten ist. Hierbei gibt es nicht nur praktische Handlungsempfehlungen, sondern auch die dahinter stehenden Überlegungen. Auch Tätigkeiten im und für den Waldgarten wie das vermehren von Pflanzen - egal ob Stauden, Sträucher oder Bäume durch z.B. veredeln wird ausführlich beschrieben. Das Buch behandelt zwar auch einjährige Kulturen, der Schwerpunkt liegt aber ganz klar auf ausdauernden Pflanzen. Hierbei beschränkt sich das Buch nicht nur auf den Aspekt der Essbarkeit, sondern gibt auch dem Aufbau eines funktionierenden Gesamtsystems, inklusive Aspekten wie Futterpflanzen für Insekten Raum. So findet sich beispielsweise am Ende des Buches sechs Seiten mit einer Tabelle in denenlr Futterpflanzen für Bienen mit ihrem Blühzeitraum übersichtlich aufgezeigt werden. Die schiere Masse an Pflanzen aller Ebenen des Waldgarten die vorgestellt werden ist riesig. Von hohen Bäumen über Obstbäume, Sträucher, Stauden, Bodendecker, Rankpflanzen bis hin zur Integration von Pilzen ist an alles gedacht. Der Waldgarten als Quelle von Leckereien steht im Vordergrund, doch auch beispielsweise Niederwaldwirtschaft zum Gewinnen von Brennholz (oder zur Pilzzucht) wird erklärt. Bei all dem wird aber auch der ökologische Aspekt nicht ausgeblendet. So wird sowohl thematisiert wie der Klimawandel Anforderungen an den Waldgarten verändert, als auch welche positiven Effekte der Waldgarten in diesem Kontext entfalten kann. I don’t know who need to hear this but you can ignore plant spacing rules! Today I planted my beets one-two inches apart instead of four-six inches apart, and here’s why…. I can thin my beets later. I don’t like having big gaps where seeds didn’t germinate. Beet seeds are affordable but you can’t get back time in the growing season. I can harvest beet greens for salad. Baby beets are delicious! While planting rules are helping guidelines for you if you are a beginner and don’t have the experience to feel confident brake the rules, ultimately rules are just suggesting based on what has worked for other people in the past. They are not 100% all the time and it’s okay to make adjustments based out, your situation, your garden observations or your desire to grow your understanding of why work in your garden. After all it’s just seeds.
