Quite a few of the recipes I revisit every Spring include eating the veggies flowers. For example, these chive blossoms are always the first flower from our alliums in the garden but we eat them all. Some as tempura fried snacks and some as roasted scapes like a side dish. But there are many blossoms and blooms you can devour without lessening the harvest of full grown veggies. Snacking on early season treats just means you’re utilizing more of the plant and it gives you a much needed taste of what’s to come. Their legacy which, after another migration to Canada, I am grateful that I am able to share with you. This post - shrimp curry in the company of fresh garden herbs. Decided to try @foodandwine’s carrot whipped feta mezze recipe from this month’s issue, served with injera chips (not pictured). If you cannot find urfa biber (a Turkish spice), you can substitute Aleppo pepper. I also doubled the adobo sauce to give this a bit more of a bite, and I whipped the feta with extra firm tofu instead of cream to add some protein and make this dish more filling. Beluir Smoked Salmon spread from Heroes’ Feast: Flavors of the Multiverse cookbook. The actual recipe name is Beluir Poached Salmon that incorporates mostly poached salmon with some smoked salmon. But, we just smoked a bunch of salmon at home, so I went with straight homemade smoked salmon. Awesome! Loved it! But we also love salmon spreads and salmon in general, so we are predisposed to liking this recipe. Chives were from our garden. See previous post for pic of smoked salmon being made. My son and a neighbor built me a couple raised garden beds on the deck today. They are the perfect depth for vegetables, herbs, and flowers, so my oldest daughter and I planted lettuce, chives, radishes, marigolds, and cabbage in them. We also took some time to uncover the garlic, plant watermelon, pumpkins, squash, corn, and peas in a couple of the in-ground garden beds, and strawberry, onions, beets, dill, and carrots in the tires (one of the tires has strawberries from last year growing already). In a couple weeks we’ll put out the pepper and tomato plants we started a couple months ago, and plant more of whatever we have left of seeds if we still have space in the garden. Now we pray that we have at least three frost-free months of perfect growing weather ahead of us.
