Let’s talk alcohol 🍹 As a health and fitness coach I enjoy an occasional drink just as much as the next person, but I want to shed light on alcohol and it’s impact. Alcohol is the fourth macronutrient and consists of about 7 calories per gram. The tricky thing here is that alcohol has calories but doesn’t provide any nutritional value and if we’re not careful those empty calories can add up fast. Outside of calories, alcohol also impacts our bodies in other ways. It can disrupt sleep patterns and inhibit muscle recovery. All that to be said, I’m not saying you should abstain from alcohol. Life is all about balance ~ alcohol included. Grabbing drinks with friends can most definitely be a part of your healthy lifestyle, just as it is mine. The key is moderation and mindfulness. Here are my best tips when it comes to enjoying alcohol but still wanting to stay on track with your goals ⬇️ 🍻 Stay hydrated 🍻 Choose 1% better drinks and limit sugary beverages 🍻 Ensure you’re having balanced meals to help keep you feeling full and satisfied 🍻 Practice boundaries, decide ahead of time how many drinks you’ll be having and set a plan in place You can enjoy that marg and still make progress towards your goals. 🌞 WEAR THE DAMN SHORTS 🌞 Okay so let’s go back to me in YEAR 5 of primary school. A boy called David said to me one day; “Emily, why are your legs so big?”! And it was at that point I never looked at myself the same. My legs were bigger than everyone elses, and I didn’t know why. (I learned last year that I have something called lipoedema) From that point on, I would wear dresses and shorts with tights to hide my legs. I would wear culottes even in high school instead of skirts They were a huge insecurity for me and when I was able to, I decided to start getting them tattooed so I would learn to love them in a different way. As I started my journey weight training, I noticed something change that I never thought would change about my body, my fatty deposits in my legs were noticeably getting smaller, and I realised that I was strong! I became proud and not embarrassed and started wearing shorts in the gym 😍😭 Then a few years ago now, I was in an abusive relationship, and one of the last things he said to me, in broad daylight, in the middle of a busy town centre was “oh yeah, and stop wearing shorts, you fat c*nt” He knew this would pull at my insecurities. A last attempt to upset me as he had no way else to get at me. I cried, I ran off, and I vouched to myself that I would never let anyone make me feel bad about my body ever again. Today was the first day I wore shorts this year, and I’m often reminded of my story and how it makes me feel to just be able to put those shorts on now. A lot of you might not have known this about me. I think it’s important to remind people that we all have a story, and some of us have come further than you might realise. Does eating fat mean you’ll get fat? 🤔 No!  At least not if you’re eating pro-metabolically and following the foundations I teach about. However, there is a way that dietary fat can make you gain weight.... Eating more calories than what is healthy for your body AND going higher than 30% of them being fats can lead to an increase in body fat. What’s important to remember👇 👉 the average woman needs between 1800-2200 calories a day (from a varied, nutrient dense diet) to build, maintain, and optimize their health 👉 about 30% of your calories should come from fats (the 40:30:30 ratio of macros is approximate but good for most individuals) 👉 there are optimal fats and suboptimal fats...the ones that most “health” agencies push are not the good ones.  Dump the seed oils and opt for saturated fats when cooking, monounsaturated fats at room temp.  If a “health expert” is telling you that polyunsaturated fats (vegetable, canola, soy, safflower, etc.) and oils are healthy for you...RUN. 🏃🏻‍♀️ You know what one of the biggest contributors to women who are unable to lose weight?   ⚡️ S T R E S S ⚡️ Chronic stress puts incredible amounts of strain on our systems and pumps out cortisol (a survival mechanism but we shouldn’t be in survival mode at all times).  This, in turn, tells our body that we need to “protect” ourselves and thus we can hold onto extra weight.    𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙄 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙤 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 & 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙢 & 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙. Instead of super strict eating and demonizing of foods, I promote flexible dieting for weight loss. WHY❓️ Because it is more sustainable in the long run as you eat mostly healthy foods (80%) but also eat less healthy foods (20%) you enjoy in moderation. As a dietitian my goal is to educate my client about how all foods fit. The image on the left shows an intake of heavily processed foods which are calorie dense and not sufficient in fiber or lean protein with only a sprinkle of some fruit and veg. The image on the right shows what is actually true flexible dieting. 💯 Listen if you love a cookie, roti, doubles there is nothing wrong with having it once in a while. Felt like running today so I ran! It’s been months. It was slow. There was walking. I saw a friend I haven’t seen in a while & stopped to chat. I saw a snake. Couldn’t get my phone out fast enough to capture Mr Snake but got him slithering away. 🫣. BUT I covered just over 4 miles today after not running for months so I’m calling it a win. I had a pan of blondies in my lap on the car ride home from a pool party in 2017, grabbing and eating bite after bite. I couldn’t STOP. I felt full, I felt sick, I felt guilty... but I couldn’t stop. I woke up at 5 AM the next day to “burn it all off” via fasted cardio on the treadmill at speed 3.5 and incline on 10. 2016-2017 was the height of my restrictive and disordered behaviors. If Derek wanted to go on a date - I wouldn’t eat ALL day. I thought tuna wrapped in a carb balance tortilla was considered lunch. I thought a chocolate rice cake with a teaspoon of peanut butter on it was dessert.😵‍💫 If I was ever around a bag of doritos, I would have no control. ^ this actually happened with any food I deemed “bad” I either couldn’t eat it OR I would eat the whole thing. I was disgusted with myself and never happy in my body. Even my mom’s trainer said I “could use a burger.”😅 You know what eventually saved me and transformed my entire body, mindset, and progress??? Tracking MACROS. When I learned how to slowly increase my calories and eat MORE FOOD (and more FUN FOOD) while seeing BETTER RESULTS... This day was shoulder/bicep/back focused. With the upright row, pulling up to the face gives me more of a stimulus than just pulling to the chest or shoulder height.
