Even what a place represents in your mind. It can all influence how you perform. As I head down to Bath this weekend for the @bodydevelopment mentorship this always rings true. I look forward to being surrounded by likeminded people who are also there to learn and grow. I look forward to being pushed hard physically- this gym never fails to find new limits. And I look forward to coming away with a head full of ideas and excitement, with how I can incorporate what I have learnt with my clients (sometime to their dismay 🤣) This place never fails to motivate, inspire and test my thought processes and body. Regressing exercise selection to a point that clients can execute isn't always the best idea. Case in point; the use of goblet squats when clients do not have the ability to properly back squat. The high bar barbell back squat is one of the most effective and versatile lower body exercises. The full compressions and stretch on the ankle, knee and hip joint, along with the potential for high load use, means it recruits a broad range of musculature, and the strength gained is highly correlated to athletic movements like jumping and sprinting. However, the high bar back squat requires a large degree of mobility in the lower body to be executed properly. The downside is that the exercise itself seldom increases the ability to increase the flexibility required if lacking. One intervention that seems to be popular with coaches is to change to loading position from a bar sat high on the upper traps, to a goblet position with a dumbbell held in front of the chest. The distribution of load in front of the body, allows the chest and torso to sit further back, requiring less flexibility in the lower body to stay upright and not fall over. The problem with this is although they may be executing a squat pattern, the reduction in load through a smaller range of motion means it is vastly less effective than a properly executed high bar back squat. Furthermore, performing the goblet squat provides very little in the way of increasing the flexibility that is required for more complex lifts. If you are racing a car that you cannot handle, you don't put bumpers around the car to help when you crash. You choose a car that allows you to refine your skills before upgrading. The same applies in strength training. Instead of using a modified squat pattern that has limited load and range potential, choose an exercise that increases the physical ability. In this case, a full range, knees forward split squat, especially when combined with pauses in the stretch position, is a much better use of time and energy.

Training is Training is Training Despite how we may categorize certain training means and methods into buckets such as “neuromuscular” or “energy systems” training based on which system is the rate limiter for a given activity, we can’t isolate the training stress to any one body system. You can’t develop energy systems without contracting your muscles which doesn’t happen without your nerves firing. Similarly, you can’t train the neuromuscular system without ATP supplied by the energy systems. When you aim training at a target adaptation, you’re not shooting an arrow; you’re throwing a bomb, and the blast radius of that bomb impacts the surrounding systems. If a concurrent training program fails to deliver results, it’s usually because it ignores this reality. Most strength training or endurance training programs are designed as stand-alones rather than add-ons. Coaches make an estimate about how much work an athlete can perform and positively adapt to without leaving anything on the table. Adding two of such stand-alone programs together, even if different disciplines, effectively doubles the overall training stress. This is a recipe for failure, and many who go down this road come to the conclusion that you can’t develop multiple qualities simultaneously without “interference.” The reality is that you CAN progress in multiple directions with a concurrent – or better yet, comprehensive – training program; there’s just little room for redundancy. Over the last few years I have helped 100’s of clients achieve their health and lifestyle goals. Here are 3 lessons that I have learned over the years: 1) A good plan done consistently beats the perfect plan done inconsistently. If you miss a day, or there is one workout not completed perfectly, that's okay. The way we design our programs is for sustainable progress over a long period of time. Not burnout perfection for a short period of time. 2) Some people aren’t ready yet. And that’s okay. When I first started out, I wanted to help anyone and everyone! But, over the years, I’ve developed processes to make sure your own health and wellness is a big priority for you, through my application process, before we ever have a conversation. Everyone is at a different stage in their journey. But when you’re ready, we have the program for you. 3) A coach's job isn’t to always push and motivate. I know this seems counterintuitive. It’s not about the metrics, weekly check ins and adherence trackers. It’s about meeting the client where THEY are at. Involving them in developing a realistic plan. While creating a safe place where they can comfortably share their struggles and get support when they need it. Not only have these lessons made me a better coach. But also helped our clients get some of the best transformations on the market today. Most importantly, helping our clients develop autonomy to maintain their results for the rest of their lives! There’s only one metric I use to measure my success. It’s not money. Money’s easy. It’s not the size of my gym. We get more done with less than most gyms in the world. And it’s not the amount of professional athletes I’ve trained, either. It’s one thing: “Who do these kids become when their time with me is finished?” That’s it. It’s funny because my “success metric” doesn’t even have anything to do with me. It has everything to do with them. I remember the day Sean put his foot in the ground an said enough was enough. He started on a journey with me years ago in High School and never stopped, despite his time being finished in our physical location. What’s he doing now on top of looking like he’s cut out of stone? Finishing school to get into the field of health/wellness. It’s these messages, that I’m humbled to say I get regularly, that keep me going. You can count your dollars. Been up from 1am to 8am for the last week with our new born, here’s how I adjusted my training…. I’m tired still, but data shows that physical activity in the presence of sleep deprivation alleviates negative health impacts of sleep loss https://doi.org/10.1093/eurjpc/zwad060 3 rounds of mobility flow to alleviate the stiffness of having been more sedentary for the week in the hospital w/o training Still limited on time so opted to pursue some barbell complexes this week and plan to resume routine programming next week Worried about losing your gains during times like this? Don’t fear! We only need to do about 1/9 of our normal training to maintain gains for up to 32 weeks Remember!
