With most schools coming to an end, the summer is officially here. Now I don’t know about you, but I know with absolute certainty that I am making the most out of this summer in terms of not only fitness, but my life as well. But the crazy thing is, those two things go hand-in-hand. Having your fitness and health in order is practically essential for getting the most out of life. Not only does being physically fit boost your confidence while being outside in public, but the habits needed to get into shape also have such a carryover into life. If you are in great shape, you likely have strong discipline and mindset. This can easily be applied to your work life or any other goals that you may want to accomplish. Why am I saying all this? I recently made a post about wanting to help 5 people who are serious about their fitness and want to make a change for summer. A couple of things about me: I'd much rather be quiet than act like I know. I've usually done my own fair share of work, learning, and understanding before considering passing any information along. With that being said, I appreciate putting myself in uncomfortable positions, because I can coach and apply from a place of knowledge, as well as, EXPERIENCE. With so many "NEW" & "breakthrough" changes in training and nutrition, it can be hard to decipher the gimmicks from the go-tos. Need help figuring that out? First look for experience, then figure out what's going to give you your desired results. Increasing exercise resistance has always been great for muscle growth and weight loss, just like, HIIT has always been great for athletic development and aerobic challenges. Yesterday's upper max effort session was solid. Currently in Week 3 of the 5-week wave of Cast the Die, and things are turning over nicely. Managed 230+40 in chains for 3 on the close-grip axle bench, keeping me on track to hit my end-of-cycle goal of 260+40 to feel what 300 is like. The combo of chains and close-grip on the axle is really overloading my triceps while giving my elbows and shoulders a break. With quite a bit of pressing volume across the week, including my strict log session on Thursday, this setup is working great. DB Incline was another PR: 100x8 and then 80x15. So, I get to bump BOTH sets next week. Feels like I'll reach that 100x10 sooner than later, which is really encouraging and one of my big targets per the Dante powerbuilding chart I posted a while back. Dips and I continue to get along nicely, with my top set of 100x6 not quite earning a load increase, but the overall trendline has been great. Depending on who you ask, this is a LOT of volume or barely any, but for me, it's the right amount. I'm getting stronger, and I feel like my sleeves are slowly starting to notice the increased mass. 💪 Maybe someday I'll graduate from this extra medium at Baby Gap. 😂 If this style of training looks fun to you, let's chat sometime? Need to fit into “that dress”? This client dropped 25 lbs, went down multiple sizes, did a photoshoot and looked incredible on her big day…Here’s how! First off I wanna say this client went about this the RIGHT WAY. She contacted me with nearly 9 months to get ready for her wedding because she did NOT want to do a crash diet. This is what I ALWAYS suggest for 2 reasons: 1. Because life happens. Sometimes you’ll have ENTIRE MONTHS that won’t go as planned, business might get crazy, life circumstances might hit you by surprise & you may not be able to drop weight or be 1000% on track. That’s life! 2. Unless you’re okay with starving yourself and living on the treadmill daily with the high probability of weight regain, it’s best to take your time. That’s exactly what happened with this client. There were months where life took her by storm, months where she needed a break and wanted to enjoy life, and months where she was able to be on point! But she didn’t let life circumstances or her career stop her from fitting into her wedding dress on her big day. Regardless of where she was in life we adjusted the plan to what SHE NEEDED to get to the end goal without burning herself out. So ask yourself, do you want your journey to be sustainable & actually keep your results? Do you want to fit into that dress again for one night or FOR LIFE? Train like an Athlete: Surfing the Force-Velocity Curve 🏄 1) Maximal Strength - Utilise heavy loads (>85% 1RM). - Focus on forceful contractions, heavy weight will lead slower bar speeds (around 0.2-0.4 m/s)(VBT - Velocity Based Training):- Examples: Squats, deadlifts, bench press. 2) Strength Speed - Use loads around 70-80% 1RM. - Aim for explosive strength with bar speeds around 0.4-0.6 m/s (VBT) - Examples: Power cleans, push press, weighted jumps. 3) Peak Power - Utilize loads around 30-80% 1RM for most barbell lifts (higher for Olympic lifts)(0.6 to 0.8m/s) - Focus on generating power and speed in the movement. - Examples: Power/Hang cleans & snatch, loaded jumps, sled sprints. 4) Speed Strength (Dynamic Effort) -utilise loads around 30-60% RM (1.0 - 1.5 m/s) - Incorporate accommodating resistance (e.g., bands) to accelerate through the end of the repetition. - Enhance speed and power output. - Examples: Dynamic squats, presses with bands, speed deadlifts, hurdle and box jumps. 5) Speed - (<30% 1RM) Aim to move at a speed greater than 1.5 m/s with short ground contact time. - Utilise bodyweight exercises or light loads. - Also known as “Overspeed” or “Speed” training. - Examples: Plyometric exercises, Sprinting, and Agility drills. Slide 5 Vertical integration (VI) is the simultaneous application of multiple physical qualities in an S&C program. Sports like Rugby, football or Gaa need (hypertrophy, strength, power, speed), and place differing amounts of emphaisis on these physical qualities. By taking a VI approach we do not neglect and decondition important physical qualities highlighted above but each block would place a greater focus on a specific quality over others and micro dosing the others. This is important for athletes as taking a block periodised approach and just targeting one physical quality for example ‘size’ (hypertrophy) or max strength, the other qualities tend to be neglected and therefore become deconditioned. #TrainLikeAnAthlete
