I am trying out some tomato planters this year. They have a slow feed water reservoir as well as a central tube where the plant is place in some compost. The roots can still go into the ground. The planter will stop weeds being close to the plant and hopefully deter slugs. 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅 I also use grow bags and plant direct into the soil. Thanks to @loulous_allotment for the idea.

At last! It feels like such a relief now we are into May. I dont know about you, but it has felt like an endlessly dull wet winter and spring has been so cold that it felt as though everything in the garden had pressed pause. Then suddenly the weather has warmed and the sun has reappeared and everything is exploding into life again. A gentle green fuzz has settled over the land and the stark bare outlines of trees are disappearing beneath a delight of green foliage. At last, we are able to plant things out. My windowsills have been overwhelmed with tender plants, and my greenhouse was bursting at the seams. So today Im.planting the tomatoes in the greenhouse and polytunnel. I have lost plants before to late frosts, up here on the moors, so it does always feel like a bit of a risk. One that I'm willing to take, but I may hold a few plants back, just in case. My pumpkin and squash plants have just germinated, and I will now sow some french and runner beans, as I have room to grow them on. My first strawberry of 2024! 🍓 I bought 36 plants last year in sale for £2.70 and they are all flowering 🥰 Once the fruit are set, I'll cover the bed with fine mesh to make sure that cheeky birds don't help themselves! Please, please, please don't use plastic netting with large holes in which birds and other animals can get tangled up and die. Komkommers! Eén van m’n LIEVELINGS, ze staan weer in de moestuin! 🌱 Dit is zo’n groente die qua smaak niets lijkt op wat je in de supermarkt of bij de groenteboer kunt kopen, uit eigen tuin zijn ze zoveel lekkerder! Komkommers worden meestal klimmend en in een kas gekweekt. Ze houden namelijk wel van wat warmte en als je ze omhoog kunt leiden nemen ze natuurlijk veel minder ruimte in beslag. Een kas heb ik niet, maar ik heb wel altijd een koude bak gehad. Dus die kwam ook weer in deze tuin terug. Dit keer gemaakt van oude broeiramen en de oude planken van onze zolder ♻️. Hij is zo mooi! Hier kweek ik al jaren komkommers in zoals ik van mijn opa en vader heb geleerd. En moeilijk is het niet; zet één plant per raam, geef voldoende water en laat de plant lekker gaan. Not everyone travels the same path when it comes to Homesteads. I most definitely do not.... my decisions are dictated by how much time and effort is required. Raising kids and animals, working, managing a homestead and household are incredibly time consuming and there are just somethings I can't subscribe to.... yet I would love to bake sourdough daily, but the rate my kids consume bread I'd need to start a production line and I'd never be out or a pinny. So it's store bought or machine loaf for us! Living in the north west UK doesn't make it possible to wash and line dry everything, plus I hate laundry at the best of times I'm sure I'd hate it even more if I had to hand wash and dry everything... including white school shirts... 😱 Cows milk and cows milk products are off the card in our house..... 3 out of 4 members of the family are highly allergic so... it's plant based milks and cheese all the way. If I grew everything on our property I would have to cover every single square inch of space with food..... I am however a massive fan in surplus food boxes and hugely discounted fresh produce..... it all gets processed and stored long term so for me it's a better option. Trends will come and trends will go! I have always marched to the beat of my own drum when it comes to my style, tastes and fashion sense..... Would you believe the rhubarb on the left was forced this year??? It’s massive and taking over again just a few weeks later. I really need to find May flowering plants for the allotment next year- it is slowly turning green but that is the only color on the plot really at the moment. Hopefully the almost invasive Achillea and the borage I grew from seed start flowering soon. Got the old strawberry bed all weeded and a new frame around it. Once we harvest the fruit out of this bed this June, we’ll switch it over to a pumpkin/squash/melon bed. They will have plenty of room to over flow into the corn field and act as a living mulch.
