I'm not sure what weather conditions are like in your area but up in Zone 1a of northern saskatchewan we are having a slower start to spring. I was looking back at photos from last year and there were already leaves on the trees where this year the buds are only just forming/opening. I found sunflower seeds in a paper bag in the back of the pantry. I forgot we harvested them from my FIL's neighbor 2 years ago. We planted about 30 of them 2 days ago. This year I decided to plant beans 🌱 with my reception class but I wanted to think of ways to support their understanding of the seed to plant process. I decided to also plant beans in a bag (a little terrarium) which we stuck to the door to allow the natural light to help the beans to grow. This allowed the children to observe the physical changes happening to their beans from the germination process to the plants with leaves we have now. We have tracked the progress of both the potted and bagged beans using photographs to make links to time and changes more relatable to 4/5 years olds. Using both methods of growing has allowed the children to really watch and study the life cycle of the plant seeing what usually happens under the soil in real life. They have been gripped by this and today we extended the learning into maths by observing ‘what do you see’ ‘what do you notice’ and this led to us wanting to know who’s plant was the tallest and who’s plant was the shortest. We used our ruler (introduction) to find the results.
