We hope you can join us today, Sunday, May 19, 11am-5pm at Adrian Martinez Studio (Studio 26) for the Chester County Studio Tour! We had a terrific time with all who were able to visit the studio yesterday and we are here today until 5pm. This oil painting, Franklinia and Bumble Bee, will be on display and available for purchase. It shows a branch and flowers from the historic Franklinia tree that was saved from extinction and propogated by the American botanist John Bartram. Bartram's Garden, founded in 1728 by John Bartram, is the oldest botanical garden to survive in North America. The Franklinia alatamaha, also called the Franklin Tree, is named after Bartram's friend Benjamin Franklin. John Bartram, and his son William, first encountered a small grove of this tree on October 1, 1765 while camping by Georgia's Altamaha River. William returned to Georgia to collect seeds that were then planted in 1777 at Bartram's Garden. Saved from extinction, the species was last seen in the wild in 1803, and all Franklinia growing today are descended from those propagated and distributed by the Bartrams. Today, there are a number of Franklinia on site at Bartram's Garden, the largest is located in the Common Flower Garden to the east of the Bartram House. While it can be a challenge to cultivate, it is included in numerous private and public gardens. This painting honors the history, beauty, namesake and life of the historic Franklinia tree. A tale of horticultural chance. In 1777 Philadelphia botanist William Bartram brought seeds back from a small tree discovered in Georgia. Naming the species after his fatherā€™s friend Ben Franklin, Franklinia alatamaha is commonly known as the Franklin tree. The species vanished in the wild sometime in the early nineteenth century. Saved from extinction by Bartram, all Franklin trees today are descendants of those seeds he collected and was able to grow in his Philadelphia garden! Wonderful trip with a Master Gardener friend to WoodThrush Native Nursery this afternoon. Check out this Franklin Tree (Franklinia alatamaha). Blooming and showing stunning fall color at the same time. Oh, it was a beauty! This native North American tree is also completely extinct in the wild. It hasnā€™t been seen since the 1700s and all the existing plants in cultivation came from seeds gathered by John Bartram in 1765. I purchased a young Franklin tree while at the nursery and am so excited to see it grow. An important reminder of the impact humans have on our world and the importance of good stewardship. #nativeplants #franklintree #extinct #stewardship #dirttherapist

The bloom of the Franklin tree originally native to Southeastern Georgia. However, it has been extinct in the wild since the early 19th century according to our guide, Kevin Wiecks, director of the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The seeds and plantings of the tree were ā€œsavedā€ by John and William Bartram and named the tree after their friend Benjamin Franklin. All the Franklin trees known to exist today are descended from these saved seeds and propagated at Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia. Ben Franklin tree bloom...I took this pic yesterday evening. We planted 2 of these trees, in our yard, a few years ago. One of the trees lived. The first few years, it grew very little & no blooms. Luckily, the past 2 years, the blooms have been gorgeous!! The Franklin tree or "lost Camellia" is so beautiful & was once native to only Georgia...a rare tree. Franklin TreešŸ¤© I have been waiting all year for this tree to bloom, Iā€™m so happy I got to see and photograph it. The Franklin tree, Franklinia alatamaha, was native to a small region of Georgia, USA as of its discovery in the 1700s. But, it has been presumed extinct in the wild since its last known sighting in 1803. Luckily, the plant was preserved by the man who found it, John Bartram, and his son. They collected seeds from the wild plants before they disappeared. Today, all Franklin trees are descendants of these seeds. The decision to plant Franklinia on the southwest slope of Arnold Arboretum's Bussey Hill was based on the knowledge-gained from experience-that this was one of the best locations for growing plants. The soil, which is deep and relatively free of stones, provides an excellent balance of moisture retention and drainage, and the mid-slope location gives protection from both the cold winter winds and the unpredictable frosts of spring and fall. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

Franklinia belongs to the tea family and is closely related to Stewartia and Gordonia (loblolly bay). It is not known why this tree disappeared in the wild. Land along the Altamaha River was cleared for cotton plantations leading to one theory that a cotton pathogen found in the soil (carried downstream through erosion) was the main cause of the extinction of the colony. Other extinction theories include decline from climate change, destruction by man, single colony of plants was not genetically diverse enough to withstand pathogens or changing conditions, or a local disaster (flood or fire). #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

John Bartram was appointed Royal Botanist for North America by King George III in 1765. In that same year, John Bartram and his son William discovered Franklinia growing in a 2-3 acre tract along the banks of the Altamaha River in southeastern Georgia. Franklinia has never been observed growing in any other place than along the Altamaha River. In a return trip in 1773, William Bartram collected seed from this site and brought it back to the Bartram's garden in Philadelphia where the tree was successfully grown. This tree has been extinct in the wild since 1803. It has been perpetuated in cultivation (all plants derive from the seed collected by Bartram) not only because of its rarity but also because of its attractive flowers and foliage. The current genetic base of this plant is quite narrow in large part because all plants currently in existence in the world come from the materials collected by the Bartrams Photo by William Ned Friedman #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

Wilt and root rot can be serious problems. In general, this tree has a reputation for being difficult to grow. Thomas Meehan propagated from a specimen of Franklinia growing in his nursery in Germantown PA, and donated a Franklinia plant to the Arnold Arboretum. It was accessioned under #2428 as Gordonia pubescens in December 1884. Sargent mentions this tree in the Franklima entry of the first volume of Silva of North America where he published a beautiful illustration of it. The specific technique that was probably used to propagate this plant was described by Thomas Meehanā€™s younger brother Joseph in Garden and Forest: ā€œThe tree can be increased by layering. If good soil be placed about it, and the layer not disturbed for two years, a strong, well-rooted plant results.ā€ Naturalist William Bartram named this species to honor Benjamin Franklin, a good friend of his father, the early American botanist John Bartram. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

Do you see the tiny green dot in Georgia? Yep, that is the Franklin Treeā€™s native range. Yes, it will grow other places. Yes, Franklinia will happily grow in Ohio. You better have gorgeous soils and be prepared to give it a little attention - but you can absolutely have this wonderful, unique tree grow in your yard. I usually see it available at specialty native plant nurseries or special plant sales. Franklinia is best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Must have good soil drainage. May not be reliably winter hardy in the northern parts of USDA Zone 5 where it should be planted in a protected location. Hard to transplant because of its sparsely fibrous root system, and is best left undisturbed once planted in the landscape. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation #HabitatMap

Arnold Arboretum Assession 2428 - 3 *A - One of the Oldest Franklin Trees in existence at Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University. Arnold Arboretum has 8 living specimens. First Franklinia alatamaha was added in 1905 and the most recent addition was in 1993. The tallest specimen is 3.5 meters tall. https://arboretum.harvard.edu/stories/against-all-odds-growing-franklinia-in-boston/ https://arboretum.harvard.edu/plant-bios/franklin-tree/ The title of ā€œoldest documented Frankliniaā€ was bestowed on the Arboretumā€™s plants in 2000 after a two-year survey of cultivated Franklinias throughout the world that was conducted by Historic Bartramā€™s Garden in Philadelphia. To appreciate the significance of this finding, we must review the plantā€™s colorful history. The species was discovered in southeast Georgia, along the Altamaha River near Fort Barrington, on October 1, 1765, by John Bartram and his son William. The plant was not in flower at the time, so its identity remained uncertain. William returned to the area in 1773 and produced a beautiful illustration of the plant in flower that he ranked as being ā€œof the first order for beauty and fragrance.ā€ In 1776, William was able to collect seed from the plants, which he took back to Philadelphia. Several other collectors later visited the Bartramā€™s Franklinia site along the Altamaha River, the last being the English nurseryman John Lyon in 1803. Since then, no one has reported finding Franklinia growing in the wild. William sowed the Franklinia seed he had collected shortly after his return to Philadelphia in January 1777, and they germinated soon after. The resulting plants produced their first flowers four years later, in 1781, and their first seed in 1782. On August 16, 1783, William wrote to Linnaeus that he had raised a total of five Franklinia seedlingsā€”two he sent to France and two he planted in his own garden, which were currently flowering and ā€œfull of seed nearly ripe.ā€ #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation #ChampionTrees

The seed of the Franklin tree develops over two growing seasons. Following pollination in late summer, the fertilized egg (zygote) within the immature seed overwinters in a dormant state, before continuing its development in spring. By autumn, you can observe flowers and ripening fruit capsules on the tree at the same time. Arnold Arboretumā€™s early experiments with cultivating Franklinia were primarily focused on its hardiness. From the perspective of 120 yearsā€™ hindsight, however, the plantā€™s susceptibility to diseaseā€”especially from the wilt-causing fungus Phytophthora cinnamonā€”appears to be a more critical problem. This pathogen is particularly troublesome in heavy, wet soils, but even where drainage is not an issue, Franklinia has the well-deserved reputation of being difficult to keep aliveā€”a ā€œmiffyā€ plant, to use an English horticultural term. A second factor that makes Franklinia tricky to grow is its requirement for acid soil-with a pH between 5 and 6-an observation that was not documented until 1927. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

The Franklin tree blooms through late summer and early fallā€”unusually late for a woody plantā€”and displays its showy blossoms alongside brilliant autumn foliage. Camellia-like, cup-shaped, 5-petaled, sweetly-fragrant, white flowers (to 3ā€ diameter) bloom in late summer to early fall. Each flower sports a boss of egg-yolk yellow center stamens. Franklinia is a lovely small flowering tree with gorgeous fragrant big white flowers. If you have a green thumb, watch for Franklin Tree at your local plant sales and arboretum fundraisers. They are out there for people wanting one. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

The Franklin Treeā€™s bark has smooth light gray vertical fissures or striations that become rough and darker gray at the base as the tree matures. A relative of Stewartia and Camellia, the Franklin tree is a member of the tea family (Theaceae), and is the sole member of its genus. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

Developing fruit (left) and breaking leaf bud (right). The Franklin Treeā€™s branches droop and are typically multi-trunked trees. There are thorns on the medium sized green-brown twigs. https://arboretum.harvard.edu/stories/against-all-odds-growing-franklinia-in-boston/ One way of propagating Franklinia is by taking cuttings. The two original Franklinia plants that grew in Bartramā€™s garden were a ready source of Franklinia seed and they were distributed by William and later by his nephew, Robert Carr. Soon Franklinia became more common in the Philadelphia area and a number of local nurseries began propagating it. Foremost among the early propagators was Thomas Meehan, who had immigrated to the United States in 1848 and worked as the gardener at Bartramā€™s Garden before establishing his own nursery in Germantown in 1853. In that same year, Meehan published The American Handbook of Ornamental Trees in which he described the cultivation and propagation of Franklinia: ā€œIt seems to thrive best in a light rich loam, contiguous to moisture; and may be propagated by either seeds or layers.ā€ During the 1870s and 80s, the Arboretumā€™s first director, C. S. Sargent, worked closely with Meehan to save Bartramā€™s house and what was left of the garden from destruction, a goal that was accomplished in 1891 when the property officially became part of the Philadelphia park system. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

The earliest mention of what would come to be called the Franklin tree appears in a journal entry in 1765. A father and son were on a trip through the southeastern part of the then British colony of Georgia when they noticed a striking tree growing along the banks of a river. The father, John Bartram, wrote that heā€™d seen ā€œseveral very curious shrubsā€ in his journal. Born into a Quaker family in Pennsylvania in 1699, Bartram had developed a keen interest in botany. He traveled throughout the American colonies and what is today Florida, collecting seeds of interesting plants to grow in a corner of his farm. He also sent seeds abroad. Through his correspondence with botanists in Europe, Bartram was responsible for the introduction of many North American species into Europe. In 1765, King George III named Bartram ā€œKingā€™s Botanist in North America,ā€ a position which came with Ā£50 a year. Bartramā€™s son, William, returned to the area in Georgia to collect seed of the Franklin tree several years later. In 1791, he wrote, ā€œWe never saw it any other place, nor have I ever seen it growing wild, in all my travels, from Pennsylvania to Point Coupe, on the banks of the Mississippi.ā€ He brought the seeds back to Philadelphia. His collection of the species was timely; within 50 years, the tree was extinct in the wild. All living Franklin treesā€”which Bartram named for family friend Benjamin Franklinā€”are descended from the seeds Bartram collected. Without William Bartramā€™s initial collection of Franklin tree in 1776 and subsequent conservation work at institutions like the Arnold Arboretum, the species would no longer existā€”and may have never been discovered before becoming extinct in the wild. Every Franklin tree alive today descends from the seed gathered and sown by Bartram. Ex situ conservation efforts of botanical gardens and arboreta around the world are crucial to this speciesā€™ survival. https://arboretum.harvard.edu/plant-bios/franklin-tree/ #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae #Bartram #Georgia #Exsituconservation

(Glossy, narrow leaves. Suzanne Mrozak) Extinct in the wild, this unique species is conserved in arboreta and botanical gardens around the world. Franklinia alatamaha has narrow, oblong-obovate, glossy dark green leaves (to 5ā€ long) that turn quality shades of orange, red and purple in autumn. https://arboretum.harvard.edu/plant-bios/franklin-tree/ #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae

Franklinia alatamaha, commonly called Franklin tree, typically grows as a single-trunk tree with a rounded crown or as a multi-stemmed shrub. As a single trunk tree, it can grow to 20ā€™ tall or more, but is more often seen growing much shorter. Growing in Hardiness Zone 5-8 and enjoys full sun to part shade conditions. This small-at-maturity rare tree has a spread of 6 to 15 feet wide. Put the Franklin Tree on your life list as a goal to see at your favorite arboretum. #FranklinTree #Franklinia #Frankliniaalatamaha #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #NativeTree #Native #Theaceae

John bar tram house and garden. Founded in 1728 by botanist John Bartram, itā€™s the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America. Located in southwest Philly, it has the only recreational access to the Tidal Schuylkill river. The Bartrams saved the ā€œFranklin Treeā€ and contains the oldest Ginkgo tree in North America. George Washington stopped here as President. It became a Philadelphia national landmark in 1960. #bartramsgarden #johnbartram #georgewashingtonstops #phillylandmarked #pennsylvanialandmarked #franklintree #botanicalgarden #gophilly #visitphilly #schuykillrivertrail #schuykillriver #philadelphiaparksandrecreation
