The result of today's sketching session with a group of @urbansketchers.nl of Rotterdam in Trompenburg Tuinen en Arboretum @trompenburg . This was the first time I have visited the garden and I was blown away by its beauty. Of course, it is now a wonderful season when rhododendrons are in bloom. This is one of my favourite blossoms, and the variety of different types in Trompenburg is astonishing. It was hard to choose a subject, but I stuck with my favourite pink-purple one. The garden offers many beautiful locations where you can sit and admire, or sketch, the beauty which surrounds you. It was also great meeting new people of this beautiful day! Ajuga species—often called bugleweed—is a vigorous ground-hugging perennial usually grown as a ground cover. It has both showy foliage and flowers. Leaves are spoon-shaped and born in dense rosettes from green to bronze to purplish. Flowers appear in spring and summer on spikes and range from cobalt blue to bluish purple. Set container-grown Ajuga in the garden in spring or autumn. Start new plants from separated rooted stems or root cutting in early summer. Use Ajuga in beds and borders in both sunny and shady gardens and also in rock gardens. Ajuga grows easily in Zones 3 to 8. E' incredibile come a volte non conosciamo posti belli a pochi passi da casa. Per puro caso ho scoperto questo parco su internet e ieri, data la bellissima giornata di sole, è stata l'occasione per scoprirlo. Si tratta della Villa Comunale di Scafati, patrimonio di inestimabile valore storico, architettonico ed ambientale, le cui origini risalgono alla prima metà dell’800. Nel tempo l’ampio appezzamento è stato gradualmente trasformato in un vero giardino con una grande ricchezza di vegetazione. De Materia Medica by Dioscorides - Book 3, 157 (Eng. trans. by Tess Anne Osbaldeston) "Peonia (or glycyside) some call pentoboron ... The herb peony is plucked up in the heat of the dogdays [summer] before sunrise; it is hanged about one and is good against poisons, bewitching, fears, and devils and their assaults, and against fevers that come with shivering whether by night, or day, or paroxysm. And it is said that (sometimes) growing on a hill where there were devils, it drove them away." However, a hybrid species, Paeonia x suffruticosa has been used in oriental medicine. It's root bark contains paeonol (anti-inflammatory, painkiller).
