Two Parisian museums, @museemarmottanmonet_, chapter 68 of “111 Museums in Paris That You Shouldn’t Miss” and @museeorangerie, chapter 87, house some of the most important masterpieces of Claude Monet based on the waterlilies in the pond at his home in Giverny. You may not realise that their existence is due to a botanist from the Aquitaine region of France. Starting in 1875, the botanist Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac began to grow and create new hybrids of waterlilies at his gardens in the town of Temple-sur-Lot. When Monet finished the construction of his pond in 1894, he ordered several of these water plants, and the series of paintings of water lilies he painted over the subsequent years are those from the @latourmarliac estate. Paris modern. This is what greeted me when I left my Paris apartment building each day, when I was enjoying the city for six weeks. In 2012, I stayed in a studio apartment on Rue Rambuteau that belonged to the friend of an American paperweight-collecting friend of mine. My apartment is in the wider, light-colored building behind the trees. The Parisian was on an extended vacation of her own. My view was of the facade of the Centre Pompidou, which is known officially as the Centre national d’art et de culture Georges-Pompidou. In English, it’s called the Pompidou Centre, or, to most people, The Beaubourg. It is Paris’s primary museum for modern art. ———— 🇫🇷 The Beaubourg is in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles, the Marais neighborhood, and Rue Montorgueil. The construction of the building began in 1971 and the museum was opened in 1977. It was designed in the style of so-called “high-tech architecture” by the architectural team of Richard Rogers, Su Rogers, Renzo Piano, and Gianfranco Franchini.
