Algerian Village Scene under an Arch Roger Marius Debat (1906-1972) an artist born in Constantine, Algeria. (then a French colony). His father Georges Debat was also an artist. He was a student at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers and then the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Roger later became the director of the Beaux-Arts de Constantine. Entre ellas me he dedicado un momento a conocer mejor a la artista francesa Suzanne Valandon (Marie- Clémentine Valade, 1865- 1938), que en muchos medios la llaman "la musa que se hizo artista", porque primero fue modelo de los impresionistas y postimpresionistas hombres y después empezó a pintar; pero para mí, más bien, ha sido una mujeres con una curiosidad innata por el arte que la llevo a desarrollar interés y técnicas de todo tipo. . Como de todas las artistas a las que no ha tratado bien la historia del arte, de ella se han dicho muchas cosas. ¿Cómo aprendió? ¿Qué le interesaba? ¿Tuvo un tutor o fue autodidacta? Rodeada de todos "los grandes de la época" solo tuvo que mirar y aprender, creando dibujos de gran belleza y carácter, que dicen que hasta llegó a emocionar a Degas. . I really didn’t think this 12th century church in Frostenden would be open. But much to my surprise it was. I even met a lovely ol’ lady inside who proceeded to tell me all about the buildings history. Including about an unusual looking stone embedded into the round tower (swipe right). Apparently, predating this particular building was a wooden construction. The coastline was much closer than today in pre Norman Britain and a river ran nearby also. The wooden church had a very tall tower which was simultaneously used as a look out post. Supposedly Viking raiding parties would frequently traverse the nearby river and the tower would provide the local residents with enough warning of an incoming quarrel. When the church was rebuilt in stone, the local residents used this quern stone (designed for grinding wheat by hand) not only as building material but as a good luck/protection charm. Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. HANNA RUDZKA-CYBISOWA (1897-1988) a Polish artist and teacher. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1924 she travelled to Paris along with a group of Polish students who named themselves the Komitet Paryski (the Paris committee, also called the Kapists). The same year Hanna married Polish artist Jan Cybis. From 1931-1933 Hanna lived in Warsaw, returning for a time to Paris where she had a solo exhibition. After WWII, she began teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Hanna taught there until her retirement in 1967. The Muse (1897) Jòzef Mehoffer (1869-1946) a Polish painter and decorative artist, one of the leading artists of the Young Poland movement and one of the most notable and respected Polish artists of his time. Born in Ropczyce in south-eastern Poland. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, as well as in Paris at the Académie Colarossi among others. There Jòzef began painting portraits. He later expanded his work to include different techniques, such as graphic art, stained glass, textiles, chalk drawings, etchings and book illustrations. Jòzef also produced set designs for theatre, and stylized furniture designs. The Young Poland movement was a modernist period in Polish visual arts, literature and music, spanning the years 1890-1918. Travel back in time and place to the ancient Eurasian Steppes with this hand burned wooden plate, adorned with intricate pyrography depicting the timeless tattoos of the Siberian Ice Maiden, also revered as the Princess of Ukok. Inspired by her enigmatic aura and cultural significance, I’ve meticulously imbued the linework with my own artistic interpretation. The mummified remains of the Ice Maiden, an esteemed figure of the Pazyryk culture, were unearthed intact within a subterranean burial chamber on the Ukok Plateau. This plateau, nestled adjacent to the Mongolian border, is steeped in folklore, regarded by locals as a realm beyond the mundane. Preserved over millennia, the Ice Maiden’s tattooed skin stands as a testament to her societal stature and spiritual convictions. From mythical creatures like the deer with a griffon beak depicted here to a panther with sheep legs, each tattoo narrates tales of her lineage and selfhood. This piece serves as an altar piece, forging a connection to the ancestors of the North. Whether placed on a tabletop, showcased on furniture, or hung on a wall with a simple hook, its very versatile. I personally think it would be amazing on a wall in a tattoo shop. 📷: Portrait of Lord Byron / excerpt from Byron's poem "Elegy on Newstead Abbey" / Newstead Abbey in 1880. I'm back with a post on Byron's humanity and charity to those in need! As some of you may know, I am currently reading Ernest J. Lovell's edited conversations of Byron, and today's post I source from there. It is a brilliant volume and one I greatly recommend to everyone interested in Byron. Today's snippet of conversation comes from none other than William Fletcher himself, Byron's valet. This was recorded by Fletcher in 1808, when Byron would have been twenty years old, and Lord at Newstead. I chose the excerpt from Byron's poem because it formed part of his collection Hours of Idleness, which was published a year before Fletcher recorded this incident, in 1807, and also because the excerpt is situated at Newstead. Fletcher writes: "A poor man came to Newstead Abbey, where we then resided, and asked alms of a youth, son to one of the farmers. Perceiving that he sent the beggar away without giving him even a morsel of bread, my master (that's Byron) called to the lad, who was his favourite servant and said "I insist on your going after that poor man and serving him the whole of this day with everything he wants, and in case you act in such a way again, I will make you provide a good dinner for him: and recollect if you ever insult or ill use any other person in distress, you shall be made to wait behind their chair, till they have dined, this will teach you how to behave yourself in the future." EN: Smokers in an Interior is an oil on canvas painting from 1643 by the French Baroque painters Le Nain Brothers. Not all the Le Nain genre scenes depict peasants. Some of them show middle-class sitters, even rarer in art than the depiction of the poor. It is one of these larger ‘bourgeois compositions’ which admits the Le Nain brothers into that small group of painters capable of creating a masterpiece. Its technique must have been learned during the painting of the Forge, but the brushwork is far more precise. The composition is much less original, being closer to the type familiar from the Dutch. The figures are grouped round a table illuminated by a solitary candle, and the figure on the left has fallen asleep at the table.
