'You can't see the forest for the trees' - Sparks So here is No. 080. As you may be aware, I decided to 'document' my current palette of 18 colors as part of this endeavor of creating 100 new paintings. So of the 100 pieces, 18 will be monochromatic and use simply 1 color. They are difficult to photograph but will become important in the overall collection as they truly represent in its purest form, the concept of One Line at a Time. I have 3 'greens' as part of this journey. This one I call my medium green. It's a horizontal band of 40 vertical lines, painted individually, One at a Time across the center of the canvas. Trees? Tim Hawkinson Untitled, Oil on wood. Tim Hawkinson was born in San Francisco in 1960. He went on to attend San Jose State University and later earned his MFA from UCLA in 1989. A renowned contemporary artist based out of Los Angeles, Hawkinson’s work has been featured in exhibitions in the United States and abroad including the Venice Bienniale, Whitney Biennial, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. Over the course of his nearly two-decade career, Hawkinson has garnered a reputation as one of America’s most imaginative contemporary artists. His body of work ranges from paintings and photographs to miniature sculptures made from his own fingernail clippings, but he is best known for his large-scale kinetic and sound-producing sculptures. Using ubiquitous, even store-bought materials, Hawkinson crafts intricate works that are simultaneously familiar and surprising. His work often finds inspiration in his own body, completely re-imagining conventional self-portraiture. Andrew Wyeth 🇺🇲 (1917-2009) - Christina's World (1948) The woman in the painting is Anna Christina Olson (1893-1968). Anna had a degenerative muscular disorder, Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease, which meant that she had not been able to walk since she was a young child. She was firmly against using a wheelchair and so she would crawl everywhere. Wyeth was inspired to create the painting when he saw her crawling across a field while he was watching from a window in the house. He had a summer home in the area and was on friendly terms with Olson, using her and her younger brother as the subjects of paintings from 1940 to 1968. Olson was the inspiration and subject of the painting, but she was not the primary model; Wyeth's wife Betsy posed as the torso of the painting. The Medici Family Villa in Rome was painted by Ross Sterling Turner in 1894. NH Antique Co-op tried to acquire this painting in 2006 to no avail and we are proud to say that we just purchased it 18 years later and it is now hanging in our upstairs gallery. Here are images of the painting in 2006 before it was cleaned and conserved and how it looks today housed in its beautiful frame. We also discovered a corresponding photograph taken during the same time period by Gabrielle Hebert on the Bosco Terrace at the Villa. This epic panoramic oil painting measures 41.5 “ h x 65.5” wide Ross Sterling Turner (1847-1915) was born in Westport, New York, and after moving to Alexandria, Virginia, took his first job as a mechanical draftsman at the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C. However, his artistic inclinations soon took him far from the drafting table, and in 1876 he traveled to Europe, first to Paris, then to Germany, he became a student at the prestigious Munich Academy, received tutelage from the German realist painter William Liebl and met fellow Americans Frank Duveneck and William Merritt Chase. About 1879, Turner traveled to Rome, Florence, and Venice (where he became known as one of Duveneck’s Boys) to study the Old Masters, and it was here in Italy that he began a close examination of the effects of light and color on his work. As a Cuban American, displacement in Ana’s early life informed her fearless personality and provocative artistic style. Her life ended abruptly in 1985 with a fall from a 34th-floor window, a questionable event which was never proven as murder at the hands of her husband. Lilla Cabot Perry was an American artist known for her impressionist paintings. She was born in 1848 and was part of the Boston School of artists. Perry studied in Europe, particularly in Paris, where she was exposed to impressionist techniques. Her works often featured domestic scenes, landscapes, and portraits, characterized by soft colors and a focus on light and atmosphere.
